Ship Simulator Finalist at I/ITSEC 2009
VSTEP announced that Ship Simulator Professional has been nominated by a jury of industry professionals, academia and DOD/military professionals for the category of Best Serious Game and eligible to win the People’s Choice Award in the 2009 Serious Games Showcase & Challenge. As a finalist, Ship Simulator Professional will be shown at the SGS&C pavilion at the Interservice/Industry Training Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).
SOREC’s New Crane Disposes of Rigs, Platforms
Cleaning the Gulf of obsolete platforms is the goal of the Southern Recycling’s (SOREC) Morgan City, Louisiana facility. The yard’s new 420-ton land-based crane has increased the Gulf region’s capacity to manage disposal of obsolete rigs and platforms in an environmentally safe and cost-effective manner. The crane, engineered and manufactured by American Crane allows the yard to lift many platforms, up to 120 ft tall, directly from the material barge to the facility’s yard without pre-cuts.
SNAME 2009 Medal Award Winners
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) recognized four individuals for their outstanding contributions to naval architecture and marine engineering. LCS 2 Independence Completes Builder's Trials
LCS2 Independence, the high-speed trimaran combatant ship being constructed by shipbuilder Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, as part of the General Dynamics Littoral Combat Ship Team, successfully completed a series of tests known as builder's trials on October 18 in the Gulf of Mexico. The trials included more than 50 demonstration events that rigorously test the ship and all of its systems in preparation for final inspection by the Navy before delivery.

As the port of Penang undertakes the biggest expansion in its history it is employing best practices to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the craneage system on which its cargo handling depends. PenangPort has ongoing maintenance arrangements with the global Konecranes Group to service its ship-to-shore cranes as it invests $340m from 2007-2012 to expand elevate its status to a main line port capable of handling more than a million TEUs a year.

Petrobras 10000 Begins 10-Year Contract
Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) announced that the newbuild ultra-deepwater drillship Petrobras 10000 has commenced operations in Angola for a subsidiary of Petrobras under a 10-year drilling contract.
Harvey Bisso Launches Subsea Venture
Harvey Bisso Subsea has launched operations to provide subsea services to the energy and maritime industries. The centerpiece of the venture is a new, fully-classed 12-man Saturation Diving System with a working depth of 1,000 feet. The portable SAT system will be deployed from the Harvey Discovery, a 265 x 58-ft, DP2 certified multi-purpose support vessel outfitted with a 65-ton crane and moon pool. The vessel provides accommodations for up to 53.

Tideland Warning Systems for Ekofisk
Tideland Signal has supplied a package of navigational warning systems for the Ekofisk complex in the North Sea to replace redundant older systems and to interface with earlier Tideland equipment which has been in service for some 25 years. Production at Ekofisk began in 1971 but today the operative parts of the complex consist of bridge-linked accommodation, production, well head, drilling and processing facilities.
Titan’s Singapore Salvage Facility Opens
Titan Salvage introduced more than 200 guests to its newest salvage response facility in western Singapore on Oct. 16. The reception celebrated the opening of the 45,000 sq ft, self-contained facility, which will serve as Titan's corporate office in the region. The complex features a fully equipped workshop to service and repair Titan's extensive inventory of salvage equipment, a dedicated diving equipment workshop and specialized storage and equipment handling space.
