Boston Doctor's Dramatic Surgery Aboard Mercy Ship
A volunteer surgeon from Boston saved a child’s life in an urgent and complex surgery performed onboard the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship, the 'Africa Mercy'. Dr. Mark Shrime performed the surgery to remove a 'fist sized' tumor from the throat of a four-year-old boy who was slowly suffocating. It was performed in one of the five operating rooms on the hospital ship with a team of professional medical volunteers from five countries.

NCS Survey, an Acteon company, has been awarded a five-year contract with AKOFS Wayfarer AS, a Norwegian marine contractor, for the supply of positioning and survey services aboard the Aker Wayfarer. Classification News No. 23/2010 detailed new SOLAS requirements* for BNWAS which entered into force on 1 January, 2011, and which apply according to ship type, gross tonnage and keel laying date. The requirements were intended to apply to all vessels. However, an omission in the amendments to SOLAS meant the requirements technically did not apply to vessels constructed (having their keels laid) before 1 July, 2002.
