Shipbuilders Council Announces Shipyard Safety Awards

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), the national association representing the U.S. shipyard industry, today announced the 2020 annual shipyard safety awards. SCA honors shipbuilding and repair organizations with the “Excellence in Safety” Award and “Improvement in Safety” Award each year for enhancement of operations and promotion of safety and accident prevention.Over the past several years, the industry has seen the total recordable incident rate steadily decline, with the most significant decline seen in 2019.

BAE Systems Wins U.S. Navy Contracts

British multinational defence company BAE Systems has received $170.7 million in contracts from the U.S. Navy to perform simultaneous maintenance and repair on two Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) guided-missile destroyers in its San Diego shipyard.Under the awarded contracts, the shipyard will tandem dry-dock the USS Stethem (DDG 63) and USS Decatur (DDG 73) in October. The synchronized two-ship docking will be a first for the company’s newest dry-dock in San Diego. San Diego Shipyards Getting $383mln to Repair Navy Ships

Three San Diego shipyards - BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, Continental Maritime, General Dynamics, and National Steel and Shipbuilding Company - have received a combined $383 million contracts for complex maintenance, repair and modernizations on amphibious ships. US Navy Awards Repair Work to BAE Systems

BAE Systems today received a $36.7 million contract from the U.S. Navy for the repair and maintenance of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18). The New Orleans will be the first ship to be repaired in the company’s new drydock in San Diego. The contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $51.5 million. BAE Systems Awarded USS Lake Erie Drydock Contract

US Department of Defense informs that BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, California, is being awarded an undefinitized contract action with a not-to-exceed amount of $78,074,377 to a previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee, incentive-fee contract (N00024-11-C-4400) for USS Lake Erie (CG 70) fiscal 2014 extended dry-docking selected restricted availability (SRA). DoD explains that an extended dry-docking SRA includes the planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve the ship's military and technical capabilities. BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc., San Diego, Calif., has been awarded a $38,601,943 modification to previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract for work on DDG 65. The contract is for the definitization of the USS Benfol (DDG 65) fiscal 2013 extended selected restricted availability Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif.,and is expected to be completed by August 2014. Navy Awards BAE Funding for USS Russell Dry-Docking

Amongst the latest Department of Defense, Navy, contracts, BAE gains contract modification for work on warship DDG 59's extended drydocking. BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc., San Diego, Calif., was awarded May 24, 2013, a $49,796,139 modification to previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract (N00024-11-C-4408) to definitize the USS Russell (DDG 59) fiscal 2013 extended dry-docking selected restricted availability. In explanation DofD adds that an extended dry-docking selected restricted availability includes the planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve the ship's military and technical capabilities. BAE Get 'USS Gridley' Finance Top-up

US Department of Defense Navy contract awards BAE  additional funding for the DDG-101 repair & maintenance docking. New Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $9,064,075 modification to previously-awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2300) to exercise an option for the accomplishment of the Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) of the USS Stockdale (DDG 106). Specific efforts include:  engineering and management in support of the PSA, labor and procurement of material to correct government responsible deficiencies and accomplis h system upgrades, performance of specified PSA work items inclusive of tests and post repair sea trials, additional manhours, and material in order to complete emergent repairs. New Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $24,656,595 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-07-C-2200) for LPD 20 post shakedown availability tasks and acceleration of fleet required ship alterations. Work to be performed is for completion of government responsible deficiencies; correction of LPD 19 shock trial related deficiencies, class pipe hangers deficiencies, and FCT trials cards; and the acceleration of fleet required ship alterations such as upgrades to the SWAN GiGE Upgrades, MK46 Gun System Upgrade, HF-SAR, SSEE Inc E, Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS) and SLQ-32 ICAD. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Jan. 2010.

BAE Systems Break Ground on New San Diego Pier

The new pier will accommodate large U.S. Navy ships, including the newest LCS. Construction will be complete in 2014, and will increase the capacity of the company’s shipyard from five to seven ships. The project will permit the company to enhance its repair and modernization capabilities to serve the U.S. Navy, government agencies and commercial customers. The pier will measure approximately 600 feet in length and will include two berths. It will enable for pier-side repairs and modifications of large commercial and military ships, including the Navy’s CG-47 and DDG-51 classes of ships. The pier will also support the Navy’s new U.S. Littoral Combat Ships that will come to the San Diego Bay for routine repairs.

70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. A detailed list of the grantees is as follows. •    Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc.,  Philadelphia, PA: $2,312,614, for the first year of training program.

BAE Systems Wins $19m Contract

BAE Systems has won a $19 million contract from the U.S. Navy’s Southwest Regional Maintenance Center to refurbish and upgrade the ARCO (ARDM-5) floating drydock so it can service the Navy’s new Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarines. The company will perform drydocking and pierside work on the ARCO at both Naval Base Point Loma and BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair. Work on the ARCO includes painting the drydock’s underwater hull, sides and tanks, reinforcing structural bulkheads, replacing and renewing switchboards, and upgrading the automated docking and centering system. All work is scheduled for completion in June 2008. The ARCO measures 492 feet long, 98 feet wide, and has a lifting capacity of 7,800 long tons.

BAE Systems Wins $30.9M Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $30.9m cost-plus-award-fee contract for maintenance, repair and alterations for the USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) Depot Modernization Period. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed in February 2009. Contract funds in the amount of $21.9m will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured and advertised via the Internet, with two proposals received. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., is the contracting activity.
