BAE Systems today received a $36.7 million contract from the U.S. Navy for the repair and maintenance of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18). BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $9,064,075 modification to previously-awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2300) to exercise an option for the accomplishment of the Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) of the USS Stockdale (DDG 106). Specific efforts include:  engineering and management in support of the PSA, labor and procurement of material to correct government responsible deficiencies and accomplis h system upgrades, performance of specified PSA work items inclusive of tests and post repair sea trials, additional manhours, and material in order to complete emergent repairs. BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $24,656,595 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-07-C-2200) for LPD 20 post shakedown availability tasks and acceleration of fleet required ship alterations. Work to be performed is for completion of government responsible deficiencies; correction of LPD 19 shock trial related deficiencies, class pipe hangers deficiencies, and FCT trials cards; and the acceleration of fleet required ship alterations such as upgrades to the SWAN GiGE Upgrades, MK46 Gun System Upgrade, HF-SAR, SSEE Inc E, Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS) and SLQ-32 ICAD. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Jan. 2010.

The new pier will accommodate large U.S. Navy ships, including the newest LCS. Construction will be complete in 2014, and will increase the capacity of the company’s shipyard from five to seven ships. The project will permit the company to enhance its repair and modernization capabilities to serve the U.S. Navy, government agencies and commercial customers. The pier will measure approximately 600 feet in length and will include two berths. It will enable for pier-side repairs and modifications of large commercial and military ships, including the Navy’s CG-47 and DDG-51 classes of ships. The pier will also support the Navy’s new U.S. Littoral Combat Ships that will come to the San Diego Bay for routine repairs.

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. BAE Systems has won a $19 million contract from the U.S. Navy’s Southwest Regional Maintenance Center to refurbish and upgrade the ARCO (ARDM-5) floating drydock so it can service the Navy’s new Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarines. The company will perform drydocking and pierside work on the ARCO at both Naval Base Point Loma and BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair. Work on the ARCO includes painting the drydock’s underwater hull, sides and tanks, reinforcing structural bulkheads, replacing and renewing switchboards, and upgrading the automated docking and centering system. All work is scheduled for completion in June 2008. The ARCO measures 492 feet long, 98 feet wide, and has a lifting capacity of 7,800 long tons.
