Port of Salalah, the largest port in Oman, hit an all-time record container volume of 4-million TEUs in December 2019.Considering all services and volumes that were re-directed to other ports due to the impact of Cyclone Mekunu in 2018, the Port of Salalah has also achieved a 19% year-on-year volume growth, said a press note from the port, which is situated in the Dhofar Governorate, on the Arabian Sea which is on the northern part of the Indian Ocean.The concerted efforts of employees and the support of stakeholders have been reinforced by significant incremental capital expenditure as part of the company’s asset replacement and capacity augmentation program.“We are proud of the achievement of the team,” says Mark Hardiman, CEO of Port of Salalah.

Cargotec division Navis has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of New Zealand-based Jade Logistics.Jade Logistics provides Master terminal operating systems (TOS) for mixed cargo terminals.With N4, Octopi and Jade Master Terminal, Navis can offer the flexibility of the right TOS for any prospective customer’s cargo requirements. APM Terminals announced that its Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) at Port Said, Egypt has achieved major efficiencies in yard and quay operations after fine tuning the Navis N4 Expert Decking Module, the system which automates yard planning.According to the Hague-headquartered international container terminal operating company, the system is used to automate planning by distributing containers throughout the yard based on predefined rules."Typically yard planning is extremely time-consuming, costly and inaccurate. The Navis system aims to optimise the storage of containers in the most efficient manner, leaving more time for users to manage the yard," it said in a press release.At the SCCT, staff focused on dwell times for transhipment containers.

The provider of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, Kalmar has signed a maintenance and support agreement with International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI) covering the automated container handling solution operating at Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT).The order was booked in Cargotec's Q4 2018 order intake with the agreement coming into effect in November 2018, said a press release. Australia's first fully automated container terminal, VICT, welcomed its first vessel in March 2017. Located at Webb Dock East in the Port of Melbourne, the terminal's unique location on the bay side of the port means a faster turnaround time for imports and exports as well as easier berthing for ships.

On August 24, 2018, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) faced a problem that didn’t have a quick solution: A bolt from a hangar bay door roller assembly was stressed to the point of breaking, rendering the door unable to perform its basic task of opening and closing. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, and Navis, part of Kalmar Business Area within Cargotec, have been awarded the contract to supply a state-of-the-art, fully automated intermodal terminal solution for Qube's Moorebank Logistics Park (MLP) in south-western Sydney. The order, valued at approximately EUR 80 million, includes the supply of the OneTerminal solution comprising Kalmar's automated train handling, automated yard crane and automated horizontal transportation equipment and the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS). It was booked into Cargotec's 2018 second quarter order intake. The manual operations at the Moorebank facility are due to commence in Q1 of 2019.

North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven (NTB) has upgraded its terminal operating system from Navis Express to the N4 terminal system. NTB is one of Europe's busiest and most important container terminals, handling about 3.2 million TEUs annually via continuous 24/7 operations. The terminal is located in Bremerhaven, Germany, offering complete intermodal connections to 130 ports worldwide. "N4 is the most advanced and widely-used terminal system on the market; we never considered another provider when tasked with migrating from Navis SPARCS and Express," said Marc Dieterich, General Manager Operations, North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven GmbH & Co.

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) handled a record number of container volumes without disruption to its customers following its January 2017 upgrade to the N4 terminal system. The move to Navis N4 is part of PNCT’s $500 million infrastructure modernization project that is expected to nearly double the terminal’s capacity by 2019. The Georgia Ports Authority marked 12.3 percent container volume growth in December, moving 292,172 twenty-foot equivalent container units, an increase of 32,099 TEUs compared to December 2015, a record for the GPA. Roll-on/Roll-off cargo mirrored that growth, with a 12.3 percent increase (7,000 units) in passenger vehicles and heavy equipment handled at Colonel's Island terminal in Brunswick and Ocean Terminal in Savannah. Georgia's deepwater ports moved 63,967 Ro/Ro units last month.

Navis and Royal Arctic Line Denmark (RAL) announced that the terminal has gone live with the Navis N4 terminal system. Lacking key features in its legacy system with multiple disparate systems in place to support complex operations, RAL sought out Navis’ expertise to help align and streamline business processes via N4. RAL is a key player among the Nordic countries, serving as the only container terminal in northern Denmark and the only service provider to all of Greenland. As the sole provider along these shipping lanes, RAL’s reasons for implementing N4 are twofold – to update to a more modern platform to better service all of its current customers and as the first step in its planned expansion into increasingly competitive markets.

JLT Mobile Computers has delivered 47 of its JLT VERSO+ 10 rugged mobile vehicle computers with the most compact form factor in its class to the new T2 deep-water terminal at DCT Gdansk in Poland. Located in the heart of the Baltic, DCT Gdansk is Poland’s largest container facility, and the only deep-water terminal in the Baltic Sea region. The rugged mobile vehicle computers, supplied by IT systems engineering company and JLT partner Autepra, have been installed on Kalmar T2 terminal tractors. Running industry leading Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) software, they form part of a larger development program undertaken by DCT to open a second 650 m long, deep-water berth at the T2 terminal, which will double the handling capacity of DCT Gdansk to 3M TEU per year.

Navis has announced a new N4 terminal operating system (TOS) licensing agreement with Italian terminal, Trieste Marine Terminal (TMT). TMT selected the Navis TOS to optimize the terminal’s operational cycle and lower costs. The ultimate goal is to increase TMT’s efficiencies so customers can experience improved productivity. Matadi Gateway Terminal (MGT), the new container and general cargo terminal on the Congo River, DR Congo, has received the first of two new mobile cranes scheduled to go into service at the terminal. The Terex Model 5 crane is the largest member of the medium size crane family available from Terex Port Solutions and was delivered fully erect on-board the m/v BBC ODER which commenced its voyage from Antwerp, Belgium. With a working radius of up to 51m, the geometry of the Model 5 unit is designed to serve Panamax class container ships. This unit and its sister unit, set to arrive in September, will operate with an automatic twin-lift spreader (60t in twin lift and 50t in single lift) and will also provide a heavy lift capability, 125t at an outreach of 18m.
