Kongsberg Digital Inks Deal with the Northeast Maritime Institute

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) announced it has signed partner agreement with the Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) based in Massachusetts USA. This is the first partner agreement signed with a maritime eLearning provider and includes the delivery of a range of K-Sim cloud-based simulation applications for NMI global online students.NMI's dynamic learning management system delivers a wide range of courses online, reaching mariners across the globe. The online maritime education, training, examination and certification portal is known as Northeast Maritime Online (NEMO°).

New DNV GL Rules Drive Smart Ship Operation and Management

The maritime industry is undergoing a massive shift as vessels transform into sophisticated sensor hubs, generating data and connecting through satellites in an expanding interconnected web. To enable the uptake of these systems and unlock the associated efficiencies, DNV GL is launching a new chapter to its rules for ship classification: Digital Features. The new chapter was launched with three new notations (D-INF, DDV, REW) on October 28 and will enter into force on January 1, 2021.

Maritime Cook Islands makes two appointments for Europe

Videotel, Safebridge JV for Onboard ECDIS Certification

Videotel, a provider of e-Learning maritime training solutions and a company of KVH Industries, has joined forces with online maritime training business Safebridge GmbH, which specializes in ECDIS training, to provide shipping companies with the unique ability to certify their seafarers on ECDIS type-specific training while serving onboard. More than 30 ECDIS type-specific training courses will be available, which is the most comprehensive offering in the industry. Companies using the Videotel On Demand (VOD) system will have access to this leading-edge certification route. The agreement will enable a trainee onboard to select and log onto the VOD system and access the relevant Safebridge courses.

Does e-Learning Work?

It’s time to put that question behind us. Once a question has been carefully analyzed and a reliable answer has been found, it is time to use this new knowledge to help answer the next series of important questions. This is the current situation in some parts of the maritime industry surrounding the question of whether eLearning works. To illustrate, some months ago there was a familiar discussion on an online maritime group debating whether eLearning works. Arguments on both sides cited anecdotes and conjecture on topics for which we already have solid answers informed by real research.

Crewtoo Launches Online Maritime Jobs Board

Crewtoo, an online network dedicated to seafarers, launched an online maritime jobs board. Founded by KVH Media Group, part of KVH Industries, Inc. (KVHI), Crewtoo, which says it has more than 100,000 members,  is premiering the service today in Stamford, Connecticut, at Shipping 2014, the annual shipping conference and exhibition of the Connecticut Maritime Association. The Crewtoo jobs board is integrated into the Crewtoo site and enables seafarers to simply change a setting on their profile to state that they are available for work; they are then prompted to fill in their full employment details on the site and upload their current CV/resumé.

Dutch Authorities Release Online Onboard MLC 2006 Complaint Form

The Dutch Authorities have launched an online Maritime Labor Complaint Form for seafarers, on the day of the entry into force of the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 on August 20, 2013. The Netherlands is committed to ensuring that seafarers who serve on Dutch-flag ships have decent working and living conditions, a safe and secure workplace and fair terms of employment. Seafarers are encouraged to use the ship’s standard on-board complaint procedures, as they were released on the website of the Dutch Authorities (www.ilent.nl) and in the MLC-2006 Document Generator (www-mlc-2006.eu) in order to resolve complaints at the earliest possible opportunity in accordance with MLC 2006.

Liberia Offers MLC Complaints Resolution Form

The Liberian Registry launched an online Maritime Labor Complaint Resolution Form for seafarers, ahead of the entry into force of the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 on August 20, 2013. Liberia said it is committed to ensuring that seafarers who serve on Liberian-flag ships have decent working and living conditions, a safe and secure workplace and fair employment. Seafarers are encouraged to use the ship’s onboard complaint procedures to resolve complaints at the earliest possible opportunity in accordance with MLC 2006.

A MARAD-approved online Maritime Security Awareness class begins on Oct. 15. For those who successfully complete the course you will receive a certificate and 5 continuing education credits. This course is one of a series developed by Maritime Bureau, Inc. audited by DNV and approved by MARAD to provide training as prescribed under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002.
