ClassNK Updates Steel Ship Survey/Construction Guidance
ClassNK announced the release of the latest versions of its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships. These versions include all amendments dated May 17, 2013. Among the amendments made to the Rules and Guidance this time is the establishment of the “Rules for the Inspection and Registration of Maritime Labor Systems.” Shipowners can now apply to ClassNK and request inspections of their Maritime Labor Systems conducted in accordance with the above amendment.

ClassNK Certifies Vietnamese Recruitment Center
Classification society ClassNK announced that it certified the Ho Chi Minh-based Southern Crewmanning Center (SCC), in accordance with the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 (MLC 2006). This is the first Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Service (SRPS) certification that ClassNK has issued in Vietnam. MLC 2006 is a new international convention adopted by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in February 2006 to improve working and living conditions for seafarers.
Stainless Steel Tankships a First in Japan
Duplex stainless steel, NSSC®2120 by Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation was recentlly chosen for the construction of two domestic tankers. Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. & Hakata Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. became the first shipbuilders in Japan to use stainless steel in the recent construction of the vessels, although these days, duplex stainless steels (ASTM A240M S31803, S32205) are increasingly being used for the construction of chemical tankers around the world.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced completion of work to install a ballast water treatment system on the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Libra Trader at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. The Japanese classification society has been authorized by the Romanian Naval Authority to carry out Romanian Government Surveys.
