Late last year, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered
Kaye E. Moran, a 92’ x 32’, 5100 HP Z Drive Firefighting Tug, to the Moran Towing Corporation
of New Canaan, Connecticut
. The vessel will be used to provide ship-assist services
for LNG tankers at the recently reopened Dominion Cove Point LNG storage terminal south of Baltimore, Maryland
, on the Chesapeake Bay
. Kaye E. Moran is named in honor of Kaye Barker, the wife of Moran’s Vice Chairman, James R. Barker.
Kaye E. Moran is classed ABS Maltese Cross A1, Maltese Cross AMS, Escort Vessel, Towing Vessel & Fire Fighting Class 1.
The Kaye E. Moran is the ninth high horsepower tractor tug delivered by Washburn & Doughty to Moran over the past five years and is the first to be classed ABS Firefighting 1 and have an escort notation. The Firefighting 1 classification requires two monitors to each produce 5280 gallons per minute for a distance of 394’ at a height of 148’, as well as a deluge system and the ability to sustain firefighting operations for a minimum of 24 consecutive hours.
The tug features two EMD 12-645F7B main engines, each rated at 2550 BHP @ 900 RPM, powering Rolls Royce 1650H Z Drives with 94” stainless steel propellers. Both the main engines and Z Drives are keel cooled by Fernstrum grid coolers sized for 85-degree seawater. Bollard pull is estimated at 135,000 lbs.
Two fire pump packages, consisting of Caterpillar (CAT)
3412C engines rated at 900 HP @ 2100 RPM and Nijhuis HGTFI-1-250.500 pumps, are fitted in the engine room. The pumps supply two SKUM MK-250EL/VR-250-DEFL electric FiFi 1 monitors, which are mounted on the aft upper deck. Controls for the monitors are located in the pilothouse and locally at the monitors. The SKUM monitors each have a capacity of 5300 GPM and a range of 394 Feet. Kaye E. Moran firefighting systems also includes a deluge sprinkler system and eight (8) fire stations located on the main deck.
Kaye E. Moran is equipped with two Caterpillar 3304DIT marine package unit generators producing 99KW @ 1800RPM, 208V 3 phase power. One generator is normally on-line while the other is on standby. In the event that the on-line generator fails, the standby generator will automatically start and go on line. The generator experiencing the failure will be automatically shut down.
Deck machinery includes a Markey model DYS-42 hydraulic Hawser Winch forward and a hydraulic Markey model DYSS-24 winch modified for towing aft. An electric warping capstan, Markey model CEP-40, is installed forward for rigging the hawser to a ship’s sunken bitts. The winches are powered by a common HPU, Markey type MHPU-60/20-250. Controls for the winches are mounted on the pilothouse console. The capstan will have local control.
Steel towing eyes are installed forward and aft. The forward towing eye is built with 12” schedule 120 pipe and elbows. The aft towing eye is built with 14” schedule 120 pipe and elbows. Both towing eyes are lined with stainless steel.
The Viking Fender Company supplied Kaye E. Moran’s fendering. The bow is covered with 16-in. soft loop on the lower portion and molded rubber on the upper section. 12 x 14-in. black rubber “D” fender is fitted at the main deck on the sides and stern.
The electronics package includes a Furuno GP-320B DGPS, a Simrad AP9 MK3 autopilot, a Simrad RGC 50 gyrocompass, a Standard LH-5 loud hailer, two Furuno 1943C radars, a Furuno ETR-6/10N depth sounder, and two Icom IC-M602 VHF radios.
Accommodations are located in the deckhouse and include a mess/galley; four two man staterooms, two heads and lockers. The Kaye E. Moran incorporates
many of the same design and material improvements that were made to improve the habitability for the crew, including sound attenuation, from previous tugs.

R. Moran, is scheduled for early summer 2004.
