New Saudi Arabia Shipyard to be ‘World’s Largest’

Windea La Cour Goes to Work
Two years on from the launch of the Ulstein Group’s X-STERN design at the ONS 2014 maritime exhibition in Stavanger, the first vessel to feature the innovative hull line has entered service at the Gemini offshore wind farm. Cadets Stranded on Hanjin Ship Head Home

New Vessel Aims to Transform the Fishing Industry
Seattle-based company Blue North has christened F/V Blue North, a state-of-the-art vessel designed to transform the fishing industry by improving conditions for workers, reducing environmental impact and harvesting seafood more humanely. Designed with sustainability in mind, the new longliner is geared specifically for the Alaskan cod fishery, built by Dakota Creek Industries, Inc. of Anacortes, Wash. from a design (ST-155L) by Norwegian firm Skipsteknisk AS.

Containership Catches Fire in Hamburg
A fire erupted aboard the 9,030 TEU containership CCNI Arauco berthed at the port of Hamburg, causing injuries to three workers. Hamburg police reported that the blaze broke out aboard the 300-meter Liberian flagged vessel while in harbor around noon local time. The fire, which according to initial reports was said to be caused by welding work aboard the ship, is being battled by fireboats as well as firefighters on the ground. The injured workers are being treated in a nearby hospital.

Former HMS Illustrious Sold for Scrap
The former aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious will be recycled after 32 years of service, announced the U.K. Ministry of Defense (MOD) who sold the ship to Turkish company LEYAL Ship Recycling Ltd for around £2 million. The MOD’s initial plan for the retired aircraft carrier was to retain part or all of the ship in the U.K. for heritage purposes. A competition seeking bids for development plans was launched in 2013, and though a number of proposals were received, none proved to be viable.

Fire-stricken Ferry Moored Safely
The fire aboard the passenger vessel ferry Caribbean Fantasy has been extinguished, and the vessel has been moored safely at Pier 15 in San Juan Harbor, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The fire broke out Wednesday, August 17, leading to the evacuation of 511 people from the ship. The Puerto Rico Fire Department put out the blaze around 6 p.m. Saturday using 3,000 gallons of seawater from the San Juan Harbor. The single source of the fire was contained within the vessel’s engine room.

SS United States Will Not Return to Service
A comprehensive technical feasibility study has determined the SS Unites States to be structurally sound, but a number of insurmountable obstacles will keep America’s Flagship from returning to seagoing service. In February, Crystal Cruises reached a deal with the SS United States Conservancy to restore what was once the world’s fastest, safest and largest passenger liner to a fully operational modern luxury cruise ship, pending the results of a technical feasibility study.

Fennica Grounding Caused by Inaccurate Charts
The July 2015 grounding of icebreaker Fennica near Dutch Harbor, Alaska was found to be caused by inaccuracy of nautical charts in the area, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Report of Investigation (ROI). The Finnish multipurpose icebreaker, owned by Arctia Offshore, was carrying the capping stack for Shell’s planned arctic drilling when it ran aground and suffered a gash in its hull on July 2, 2015. The event did not cause any injuries or damage to the environment.

Concordia Maritime Posts Q2 Profit
Facing a “gradually deteriorating market,” Sweden based tanker shipping company Concordia Maritime said it was able to post a profit in Q2 2016 based on high vessel employment and successful chartering, though still coming in under its Q2 2015 results largely due to an arbitration settlement and lower daily income for its vessels.
