Trelleborg Acquires US Marine Fender Company
Swedish based Trelleborg AB has finalized the acquisition of Maritime International, Inc., a U.S. based privately owned designer and manufacturer of marine fender systems and other quay accessories. The transaction will be consolidated as of October 15, 2015. Trelleborg said the bolt-on acquisition aims to strengthen its presence in berthing, docking and mooring in North America as part of its strategy to improve its position in attractive market segments.

Oil Leads Rotterdam’s 2015 Cargo Growth
The Port of Rotterdam reported a 5.4 percent increase in the amount of goods handled by the port for the first nine months of 2015, boosted largely by higher volumes of crude oil and oil product cargos. Construction of FDNY’s newest fireboat, William M. Feehan, has been completed by shipbuilder MetalCraft Marine Incorporated, and is slated for delivery and christening in the coming weeks. The name of the new boat honors veteran firefighter William Feehan, who at 71 was the oldest of 343 firefighters to pass away in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. The vessel’s nameplate, displayed prominently alongside the cabin, is milled from an I-beam lifted from the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Search for El Faro Crew Continues, Hopes Fading
Responders continue the hunt for possible survivors from the missing cargo ship El Faro, which is believed to have sunk during Hurricane Joaquin. As of Tuesday night, crews have searched some 172,257 square nautical miles while scanning in the vicinity of the ship's last known position 35 nautical miles northeast of Crooked Islands, Bahamas, the Coast Guard reported. A decision on how much longer the search will continue could be announced on Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard said.

MARAD to Fund Study on LNG Conversions
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it has entered a $900,000 cooperative agreement with Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. (TOTE) to study the costs and benefits of converting vessel to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. Under the agreement, TOTE who is to convert its containership MV Midnight Sun to operate on dual fuel LNG, will work with MARAD to obtain pre- and post-conversion air emissions data, as well as operational information.

Construction Begins on Matson’s Aloha Class
Matson, Inc., a U.S. carrier in the Pacific, announced that production has begun on its two new Aloha Class containerships following a steel cutting ceremony at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI) in Pennsylvania.
