NASSCO Delivers Final Tanker for SEA-Vista

Windea Leibniz Delivered to Bernhard Schulte
The newly built wind farm service vessel Windea Leibniz was delivered from Ulstein Verft to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing on February 28, and named March 2 at a ceremony in Ulsteinvik, Norway. New Offshore Installation Vessel for GeoSea
COSCO will build a new offshore installation vessel in China for DEME subsidiary GeoSea, to be used for offshore wind farm construction, oil and gas industry services and decommissioning work. The vessel, Orion, is due to be delivered in 2019. With a total installed capacity of 44,180kW Orion will be equipped with a high-tech crane with lifting capacity of 3,000t at more than 50m. The loads can be lifted to an unrivalled height of more than 170m.

DEME Orders World’s Largest Cutter Suction Dredger
Royal IHC said it has been awarded a contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 164m-long, 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) for DEME in Belgium. Meyer Werft Plans Norwegian Joy Float-out
The 168,800 gt cruise ship Norwegian Joy currently being built by MEYER WERFT is scheduled to float out of the builder’s covered building dock II on March 4, 2017, pending weather conditions. With the 324-meter-long, 41.4-meter-long-wide ship being berthed at the yard's pier, the remaining work and tests and trials will be carried out in the next few days. Norwegian Joy will travel down the river Ems toward the North Sea, where she will undergo sea trials in the end of March 2017.

Vigor to Build 2 More San Francisco Ferries
Vigor said it was awarded the contract to build two additional ferries for WETA (the Water Emergency Transportation Authority) in San Francisco, Calif. The shipbuilder started constructing the first two WETA ferries in this class in spring 2015, said Tim Kolb, General Manager of Vigor Ballard. Under the latest contract, the two new hulls will be constructed at Vigor Ballard (formerly Kvichak) and the superstructure at Vigor’s Harbor Island shipyard.

US Tanker Liberty Sails for Sea Trials
U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO said it has sent the newly built Jones Act tanker Liberty to sea for testing and trials. The 610-foot-long Liberty set sail for the first time on Monday, February 20 to undergo sea trials before delivery later this year. Liberty is the third and final tanker to be constructed as part of the ECO Class program for SEACOR. The three vessels are each 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

Finland Has an Icebreaker Emoji
A true leader in terms of Arctic shipping, Finland produces two-thirds of the world’s icebreaking ships. Now the country is honoring its Arctic shipbuilding prowess in emoji form. Another New Ferry for NYC
Plans are in motion to procure another newly built ferry for New York City. A city-run organization in charge of running New York’s Governors Island said it is seeking bids for the design and construction of a new passenger-only ferry for its service between the island and Manhattan. Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten, Inc. has provided technical requirements for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel, to be operated by The Trust for Governors Island.

New CEO at CMA CGM
Rodolphe Saadé is the new chief executive of container shipping line CMA CGM, taking over the role previously held by his 80-year-old father. The top spot at CMA CGM Group has been passed from one generation to another. Jacques Saadé announced on his 80th birthday that his son Rodolphe Saadé would take over as the French shipping line’s next chief executive officer. Jacques Saadé, who founded the company 1978, will remain chairman of the board of directors.

Retired Ferry Gets a New Lease on Life
A 50-year-old retired Washington State passenger ferry will get a refit, and with it another life as a floating entertainment space. Washington State Ferries (WSF) has sold its smallest retired ferry, Hiyu, for $150,000 to Menagerie Inc., who plans to repurpose the vessel as a floating entertainment venue. “We make every effort to keep our retired ferries operational, instead of being sold for scrap,” said WSF Chief of Staff Elizabeth Kosa.

Damen Takes Control of Curaçao Yard
Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) has taken over the management of the Curaçao Droogdok Maatschappij (CDM) as of February 1, 2017, following an agreement between the Government of Curaçao and Damen Shipyards Group in September 2016. The location will now continue its activities under the name of Damen Shiprepair Curaçao (DSCu). With this step in Curaçao, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Damen expands its ship repair activities across the Trans-Atlantic Ocean.

Port of Seattle CEO Resigns
Port of Seattle CEO Ted Fick tendered his resignation at a public port commission meeting Thursday after more than 2.5 years at the helm. Fick was recently placed on paid administrative leave due to “personnel issues” and the separation was described as “mutual”. “We accept the resignation of Ted Fick, and acknowledge his desire to return to the private sector,” said Commission President Tom Albro.

DEME Group’s second LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River is part of a new generation of dual fuel hoppers that set out to achieve new standards in environmental performance. Launched January 14 at Royal IHC's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands, the 7,950m3 vessel possesses a number of innovative features and technologies, including an IHC-patented two-speed gearbox as well as a newly developed wing-shaped bow thruster tunnel.
