IMO Awards Rescuers for Bravery

The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has endorsed the decision of a Panel of Judges that the 2009 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea should go to three nominees. U.S. citizens Maurice and Sophie Conti were nominated by New Zealand for the rescue of three crew members from the yacht Timella, which had grounded and then sunk off a remote South Pacific coral reef. The Contis are non-professional sailors who planned and executed the rescue while sailing with their family. AST2 Abram A. Heller of the U.S. Coast Guard was also nominated by the United States for single-handedly rescuing eight crew members of the foundered F/V Alaska Ranger in arctic weather conditions.

CG Foundation Honors 14th District

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today its Annual Tribute to the United States Coast Guard’s Fourteenth District will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2009 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Honoring local Coast Guard members who protect coastline shores from the Hawaiian Islands to Guam, the gala’s Chairman is Mr. Lee Webber, publisher and president of the Honolulu Advertiser; the Master of Ceremonies will be Mr. Michael Perry, a recognized name in Hawaiian broadcast history; and the Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker will be former Secretary of Transportation, Norman Mineta.

Foundation Hosts 28TH Salute to the Coast Guard

Scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the in , the Annual Salute will honor a select group of Coast Guard members with the Coast Guard Foundation Awards for Heroism. The gala will be emceed by Robert J. Flynn, a director of the Coast Guard Foundation and president of Mallory Jones Lynch Flynn & Assoc. Inc., and feature ceremonial music by the United States Coast Guard Band. Speakers will include Commandant Thad Allen who will also present awards, and Atlantic Area Commander, Vice Admiral Robert J. Papp, who will present colors. In addition to celebrating exemplary service, the event will raise funds to support the Foundation’s important projects and programs including the Evergreen Fund college scholarship for children…
