Kvichak Delivers 2 Boats to West Coast Launch

Kvichak Marine delivered two all-aluminum 36.6’ crew/pilot boats to West Coast Launch, Ltd. (WCL), which operates year-round as a water transportation company in Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada. The new vessels, Lelu and Kitson, will join the five vessels already operating in the West Coast Launch fleet, as the company prepares for the growth of Prince Rupert and the demands for transportation with the LNG industry. Lelu and Kitson are powered by twin Volvo D11 diesel engines rated for 510 bhp and ZF 205 marine gears. The engines are coupled to Hamilton 322 waterjets providing a speed of 35 knots.

Long Beach Port Appoints 4 Executives

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners continued to fill key positions in Harbor Department leadership ranks this week with four additional appointments of experienced executives to oversee Port of Long Beach operations. The four professionals all have long and valuable experience in their fields of engineering, maintenance and finance, and come from outside the Port of Long Beach. Two of the positions are newly created and two were vacated earlier this year. Duane Kenagy has been appointed to the newly created position of Capital Programs Executive to oversee the Port’s capital improvement program and will report directly to the Chief Executive.

For Ferries, Commercial Light at End of Regulatory Tunnel

A review of the ferry industry’s latest challenges and opportunities attracted a record 340 delegates to Vancouver last week for the 39th annual Interferry conference. The global trade association event exposed a string of concerns – notably over punitive safety and environmental regulations – but also highlighted the financial potential of new routes, onboard shopping incentives and the use of LNG fuel. Alongside sessions on the future of the industry, Canada-based CEO Len Roueche outlined a vision for maintaining Interferry’s influential lobbying role among politicians and regulators.

Jeff Lantz to Address Upcoming Interferry Annual Conference

The conference organizers inform that In a further response to the sinking of the South Korean ferry 'Sewol' in April, safety issues will be centre stage at InterferryÂ’s 39th annual conference, which takes place in Vancouver from October 4-8, 2014. Prompted by the incident, the trade association is already in dialogue with the IMO about assisting in efforts to improve domestic ferry safety. Now these and other cooperative safety initiatives will feature in a wide-ranging conference agenda addressing the industryÂ’s major regulatory, commercial and technical challenges. The IMOÂ’s latest safety strategy will be examined by special guest speaker Jeff Lantz, US Coastguard regulations director and chairman of the IMO Council.

HK International Airport Nearshore Contract for Fugro

Fugro inform that the Airport Authority of Hong Kong has awarded them a contract to carry out a major nearshore geotechnical and environmental ground investigation programme in the waters near the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok. The contract, which is worth approximately EUR 8.8 million, will provide essential engineering and environmental information and will run until November 2014. Fugro will carry out the works using a fleet of up to five vessels. The company says that having performed several projects in the waters around Chek Lap Kok in recent years, it is very familiar with the challenges caused by the restrictions of working adjacent to one of the world’s busiest airports.
