The McAllister Towing Legacy
In 1864 Abraham Lincoln was president, and the U.S. was embroiled in the midst of civil war. In 1864, McAllister Towing was established (originally as the Greenpoint Lighterage Co.) in New York City. McAllister Towing has persevered, and at times, served, through nine wars, 28 presidents, at least three catastrophic stock market crashes; collapsing oil prices, generations of advances in ship technology and vessel construction and design; and an explosion in maritime regulation.
Buckley McAllister named President of McAllister Towing
McAllister Towing is pleased to announce that Buckley McAllister has been promoted to the position of President. Captain Brian A. McAllister, President of the Company since 1984, will remain as Chairman. Buckley McAllister joined McAllister Towing in 1998 and has served as the company’s Vice President and General Counsel since that time. Prior to joining McAllister Towing, Buckley was an Associate at Hill, Betts and Nash LLP. He is a member of the bar in New York, California and a number of federal jurisdictions.
Jensen Designing Tenth McAllister Tugboat
Vessel is Third in Series and First Tier 3 Tugboat in McAllister Fleet. Jensen Maritime Consultants, a Crowley Maritime Corporation company, recently began designing a new vessel, the Eric M. McAllister, a 5,150 horsepower, twin Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboat, for McAllister Towing. This vessel, which will be built by Senesco Marine LLC of North Kingstown, R.I., will be the tenth Jensen-designed and first Tier 3 tugboat in McAllister’s fleet. Annual Great North River Tugboat Race
<p>Fifteen to 20 tugboats, the maritime 18-wheelers that normally dock ships and push barges, will roar down the Hudson River Sunday morning, September 5, as they vie to be named the fastest boat in their class. The race typically draws thousands of spectators, which is one of the reasons the tug companies enjoy participating. <br /> <br /> “New Yorkers sometimes forget they are surrounded by water and that there is a whole maritime industry working here. This tug competition is the one time a year people can really see what we do,” said Craig Rising of McAllister Towing and Transportation, one of the largest and oldest tug companies in the country. It is also a field day for the tug crews, many of whom bring their families aboard.
McAllister Towing Turns to HELM
McAllister Towing is moving from its legacy operations system to HELM, a maritime operations software system developed by Edoc Systems Group Ltd. HELM’s operations module will allow McAllister to streamline their dispatching and invoicing processes in their largest port: New York. Afterward HELM will be rolled out across McAllister’s remaining 11 ports along the U.S. East Coast and the Caribbean over the course of 2010. According to Andrew McAllister, Vice President and Managing Director of IT at McAllister Towing, “We chose Edoc’s HELM system because of their experience with multi-port ship docking operations, and their willingness to tailor their system to our specific needs as part of their customization process. They also changed the user interface to closely match our old system.
