New US and Middle East methanol production capacity being added over the next two years will have serious implications for chemical shipping trade flow patterns, according to the latest edition of the Chemical Forecaster, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. CH3OH: Make Room for Methanol

The newest buzz among offshore operators serving the oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is the increased use of methanol (CH3OH) by oil companies and contract drillers. This has meant more work for supply boats carrying this alcohol product to rigs along with rig water, fuel oil and liquid and bulk mud. Methanol is used to keep the flow lines from the wellhead to the surface of the water from becoming restricted or blocked. Restricted flow from wells is becoming an increasing problem for oil companies and drilling contractors whose bottom line depends on getting every drop of oil from a well. Flow assurance is a critical issue, especially with longer tiebacks in deepwater drilling operations.

Starting on April 18, Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest), Westfal-Larsen Management (WL), and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) attended the traditional ship naming ceremonies and took delivery of the first Korean and Japanese built methanol-fueled ocean tankers, the Lindanger, Mari Jone and Taranaki Sun. Hyundai Mipo Dockyard hosted the Korean ship naming ceremony, while Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. hosted the Japanese ceremony; where all three of these 50,000 dead weight tonne vessels were built.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) says it has signed a contract with Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Limited (MHTL) to build and charter four methanol carriers. MOL consider that the new contracts will play an essential part in MOL's strategy to strengthen long-term business, as well as enabling the company to renew its methanol fleet by replacing older vessels with ships featuring the most advanced designs. World Seaborne Coal Trade Up in 2017

World coal seaborne trade increased by 1.5 percent last year due to a recovery in output in producer countries such as the United States, Russia and China and an accompanying rise in export activity, German coal importers lobby VDKI said on Friday. Looking ahead, Wodopia said that, price-wise, China remains in the driving seat as the size of its domestic production determines how much landed coal the country needs to import. "So far, persistent demand in Southeast Asia continues to offset declining tendencies in the Atlantic and supports coal prices," Wodopia said.

Petrobras: Fire Contained on Platform in Lula Field

Brazil's state-controlled oil company Petróleo Brasileiro said on Tuesday a fire at a platform in the Santos Basin was contained and did not cause injuries or environmental damage.   Production there remains halted until safety tests can be completed, the company said. The fire was discovered early on Tuesday on a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit in the Lula Field. The unit is operated by Petrobras in consortium with Royal Dutch Shell and Petrogal .   Reporting by Marta Nogueira

Methanol a Viable Marine Fuel -Report

Methanol has a "historic opportunity" as a marine fuel, according to a new report published today by research group FCBI Energy. Despite having many attributes that make methanol an attractive, low-emissions marine fuel, it has sometimes been overlooked in policy and industry discussions, according to FCBI Energy, whose report Methanol as a Marine Fuel finds the chemical to be a well-understood and safe to handle as a viable alternative to changing to low sulfur diesel, installing scrubbers or converting to LNG.

MEO Readies Rig

MEO'S long-standing plans to commercialize stranded gas in the Timor Sea are about to move forward with the arrival off Darwin of the West Atlas jack-up drilling rig. The newly constructed rig, owned by Seadrill, has been shipped from Singapore on the semi-submersible open-deck heavy-lift transport carrier Blue Marlin. The transporter is able to sink its load deck below sea-level to allow equipment to be floated off without using cranes. MEO, which used to be Methanol Australia, is planning a gas-to-liquids project in the Bonaparte Gulf using its 100 per cent-owned Tassie Shoal LNG project and the 50 per cent-owned Tassie Shoal ethanol project about 275km northwest of Darwin. The West Atlas rig will be towed to the Heron-2 well location in permit NT/P68 in the next week.

OPK Shipyards Launch Platform Supply Vessel

On September 8, 2009, Severnaya Verf shipyard, a part of United Industrial Corporation (OPK), launched a vessel for oil-rig platform provision, also known as the project VS 485 PSV. The vessel for oil-rig platform provision is equipped with special capacities and cargo system for transportation of oil-rig mortar, friable freights, methanol and general freights on the open deck. Also, the vessel is equipped for the participation in rescuing, evacuation and fire fighting missions around the oil-producing platforms in the North Atlantic. Norway Company Solvik Hull Supplies AS is the customer of this vessel, and the designer Norway Company Vik-Sandvik AS.

Gulf Energy Maritime Takes Delivery of Tanker

Gulf Energy Maritime has taken delivery of the second of 13 double-hulled tankers on order with Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in less than three months. The $57m Gulf Elan is the eighth double-hulled tanker in GEM’s growing fleet. The company is to receive another 11 of the total order book of 13 ships valued at $590 million by 2009 end. The ship was named by lady sponsor Jane Slemeck, wife of Mark Slemeck, managing director of Kingfish Services Ltd., London-based operators for IPC/Itochu Petroleum which has time chartered the ship for one year. Gulf Elan will follow the trading path of its sister ship, Gulf Esprit, delivered to GEM last November, by going into time charter with Oman Methanol Company, a subsidiary of Oman’s giant Omzest Group, on a 15-year deal.

First Methanol-fueled Tanker Launched

Launched at the Hyundai Mipo dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, the newly built Lindanger is the world’s first methanol fueled ocean-going vessel. The ship is the first of two dual-fueled 50,000 dwt tankers owned by Norwegian firm Westfal-Larsen that will be chartered to global marine transportation company Waterfront Shipping. With a MAN designed Hyundai–B&W 6G50ME-9.3 ME-LGI dual-fuel, two-stroke engine on board, the Lindanger can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil or gasoil.

Contract Makes First Commercial ME-LGI Engine Reality

Vancouver-based Waterfront Shipping has confirmed its Methanol Carrier Project for a series of 50,000-dwt methanol carriers, each powered by an MAN B&W ME-LGI main engine running on methanol. The confirmation stems from a Letter of Intent MAN Diesel & Turbo and Waterfront signed in July of this year. MAN Diesel & Turbo officially designates the ME-LGI engine as ME-B9.3-LGI. In collaboration with leading shipping lines, Waterfront reports that it is behind the 2+1 × 6G50ME-LGI engines ordered by Westfal-Larsen, the 2+1 × 7S50ME-B9.3-LGI by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and the 1+1+1 × 6G50ME-LGI with Marinvest/Skagerack Invest. Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd.

As US Opens Up Offshore Waters, Eastern GoM Beckons

President Donald Trump's administration has proposed opening up nearly all of America's offshore waters to oil and gas drilling, but the industry says it is mainly interested in one part of it, now cordoned off by the Pentagon: the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The industry's focus on an area located near a sprawling network of existing platforms, pipes and ports could ease the path to new reserves, and assuage the drilling opponents near other places offered under the Interior Department's proposed drilling plan issued last week, like California's Pacific, the Atlantic and Arctic.

OSC Plans Fleet Expansion through 2018

State-owned Oman Shipping Company SAOC (OSC) is projecting to expand its current fleet of 43 ships to 50 by 2018, the Oman Daily Observer reported. According to the report, the expansion is in line with a ramp-up in hydrocarbon, petrochemical and industrial investment throughout Oman. As the Omani economy grows, OSC looks to provide the tonnage required to meet the maritime shipping needs of expanding production capacity, a company representative told the Observer. Shipping Sector Emissions: LNG, Methanol Lead the Pack

A recent JRC report finds that fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol are the most promising alternatives to drive decarbonisation of the shipping sector and ultimately contribute to the fight against climate change. Market penetration by alternative fuels has already begun with ship builders, engine manufacturers and classification societies by introducing greener ships running on cleaner fuels. Shipping is more fuel-efficient than road transport: it requires 2-3 grams of fuel per ton per km, compared to road transport by truck which is about 15 grams of fuel per ton per km.

Shell, Statoil Announce Joint Energy Plan

Shell and Statoil announced a plan to use carbon dioxide to increase offshore oil recovery in the North Sea. Carbon dioxide (CO2) would be captured from power generation and pumped into an underground reservoir to enhance oil recovery, resulting in increased energy production with lower CO2 impact. The project was estimated to cost about $1.4 billion dollars. The project, due to be phased in between 2010 and 2012, comprises a gas-fired power plant and methanol production facility at Tjeldbergodden near Trondheim in central Norway, which would provide CO2 to the Draugen and Heidrun offshore oil and gas fields. Operations in the Draugen field began 1993 and production was projected to run through 2013. The new project could extend production several years.

MAN Diesel & Turbo successfully demonstrated its ME-LGI concept engine in front of customers and partners at its Diesel Research Center in Copenhagen on March 17th, the company announced today. “A number of years ago we identified the need to develop an engine that could run on more environmentally-friendly, competitively-priced fuels as an alternative to MDO/MGO," said Vice President and Head of R&D, Søren H. Jensen. "We believe the ability of the ME-LGI engine to run on sulfur-free fuels offers great potential. Methanol carriers have already operated at sea for many years.
