Keppel Batangas Completes SemiSub Repair
Philippines’ Keppel Batangas, a division of Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine has recently completed repairs to the Attwood Falcon, a semi-submersible rig owned and managed by Atwood Oceanic Inc, Houston. The rig was repaired alongside yard’s deep water wharf. This yard has also been involved in the repair of two ships involved in a collision off the Philippines coast. The Sea Celebrity, a cargo ship owned by Sinsimon Navigation Thailand, suffered severe bow damage. Meanwhile, the Joseph the Worker, a passenger/cargo ship owned and managed by Negros Navigation, Philippines suffered damage to the side shell plating and stiffeners with a total weight of 30 tons. Keppel Batangas also recently repaired another of the Negros Navigation fleet, the St Peter the Apostle.
Keppel Signs LOI for Atwood Jackup Rig
Keppel AmFELS Inc. signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atwood Oceanic Inc. (Atwood) for the construction of a new jackup rig, due for delivery in third quarter 2008. The rig is based on the LeTourneau Super 116 design and is subject to additional modifications and final specifications in definitive agreements with Atwood. Located in Brownsville, Texas, Keppel AmFELS is one of the best-equipped offshore yards in the area, serving customers operating in the Gulf of Mexico and internationally. Drilling Sector May Have Missed Chance For Consolidation
Despite the announcement of a large offshore drilling merger this summer, the fragmented industry may have missed its chance for further consolidation due to a recent swift cyclical upswing, according to analysts. Shlumberger Ltd.'s announcement in July that it would merge its offshore drilling unit, Sedco Forex, with Transocean Offshore Inc., to form the world's largest offshore driller, was expected to set off a wave of consolidation in the industry, matching some of the activity among oil majors. But analysts now say a rebound in crude oil prices has closed the window of opportunity by prompting companies to hold out for wider operating margins.
