Swift Assists Vessel in Distress Off Liberian Coast
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Michael Campbell, Africa Partnership Station Public AffairsWhile transiting off the coast of Monrovia, Liberia as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS), March 20 High Speed Vessel 2 Swift received a distress call, relayed from the Maritime Regional Coordination Center (RMCC) in Lisbon, of a Portuguese fishing vessel, the Princesa Di Guadiana, stranded 100 nautical miles off the Liberian Coast with no food, water or fuel. The RMCC contacted Lt. Cmdr. Jose Neto of the Portuguese Navy, who is the APS operations officer aboard the USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), APS flag ship. Cap Lara, a Greek flagged vessel, remained in the vicinity until Swift arrived to assist the Princesa.
ONR to Develop App for Pirate Problems Etc.
The International Collaborative Development for Enhanced Maritime Domain Awareness (ICODE MDA) was one of 14 projects selected by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics to receive $1 million awards beginning this fall through the Coalition Warfare Program, which funds international collaborative research efforts. The ICODE MDA project is a research alliance between ONR and Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific).
New Research Will Aid Naval Planners
The Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global) announced Jan. 30 a grant to the University of Melbourne that will provide new insights into ocean conditions-crucial information for Navy planners involved in tactical and strategic decision-making. The project is intended to improve understanding of conditions in the Indian Ocean, including validating satellite data on salinity, or salt, levels. Confirming satellite findings with actual field-level research is an area scientists have deemed essential to improving the Navy's oceanographic models. APS, Swift Returns to Ghana in Support of NOAA, Fisheries
High Speed Vessel 2 Swift arrived in Tema, March 30 for its second visit here, as well as its seventh engagement visit as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS). Swift will host a group of 40 Ghanaian fisheries observers in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service, who will be leading a training workshop. Fisheries observers embark industrial fishing vessels off of the coast of Ghana and collect information about the fish being caught, as well as interactions between fishing activities and mammals, sea turtles and sea birds. Genco Takes Delivery of First Capesize Vessel
Genco Shipping & Trading Limited announced that it has taken delivery of the Genco Augustus, a January 2007-built 180,000 dwt Capesize vessel. The Genco Augustus is the first vessel to be delivered to the Company under Genco's previously announced agreement on July 18, 2007 to acquire nine Capsize vessels from companies within the Metrostar Management Corporation group. The Genco Augustus is currently on charter with Cargill International S.A. at a rate of $45,263 per day, less a 5% third party brokerage commission. The charter is due to expire between December 2009 and April 2010.
Genco to Sign Capesize Vessel Charter
Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK) announced that it has reached an agreement to enter into a time charter for the Genco Augustus, a 2007-built Capesize vessel, with Cargill International S.A. for approximately 10.5 to 12.5 months at a rate of $39,000 per day, less a 5% third-party brokerage commission. The time charter for the Genco Augustus is subject to the completion of definitive documentation and is expected to commence on or about January 23, 2010 following the vessel's scheduled drydocking. The previous time charter for the Genco Augustus was completed on January 10, 2010.

Construction Update: Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4

Dejong & Lebet to Design Dinner Boat
Biloxi, Miss.-based Starship Cruise Line, Inc. recently appointed Dejong & Lebet, Inc. to design, and Freeport Shipbuilding, Inc. to construct a 175 ft. yacht styled dinner/cruise vessel. M/V Starship will be docked on Biloxi's Back Bay and "Gold Coast" beaches. Interior design will be provided by Plachter-Vogel Design. The shallow-draft, Subchapter K-classed vessel will hold up to 600 passengers and will be powered by two Stewart & Stevenson Series 600 main engines at 40 hp each, as well as twin 275 kW generators.
Norborg Steps in as Clipper Group CEO
Clipper Group has appointed Peter Norborg new Group CEO, succeeding current chief Frank G. Jensen, who will continue with the company as Chairman of the Board. Norborg will commence work in Clipper on April 1, 2016. Norborg, 49, comes from a position as Chief Operating Officer at Switzerland-based open hatch/dry bulk company Gearbulk, a position he has held since 2012. Before that, he spent 14 years at D/S Norden, latest as Executive Vice President and Head of Dry Cargo division. Peter holds an EMBA from IMD Business School.
Eagle Bulk Shipping Reports Q1 Loss
Eagle Bulk Shipping reported a loss of $11.1 million in its first quarter. It posted revenue of $45.9 million in the period. Importantly, these developments are occurring against the backdrop of continued improvement in the dry bulk market itself with respect to both trade demand and vessel supply fundamentals. “Looking ahead, we are increasingly optimistic concerning Eagle’s enviable positioning within the dry bulk market, as well as our ability to generate value for all stakeholders,” Gary concluded.
Eagle Bulk Completes Greenship Bulk Fleet Acquisition
Eagle Bulk Shipping, one of the world’s largest owner-operators in the Supramax/Ultramax segment, announced that it has taken delivery of the M/V Westport Eagle, the ninth and final Crown-63 Ultramax dry bulk vessel acquired from Greenship Bulk Trust. TUI Cruises Expands to Six Ships by 2017
TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises are substantiating their expansions plans for their joint venture TUI Cruises. The Mein Schiff fleet shall grow from now three to six ships and then 14,000 beds by 2017. TUI Cruises is strengthening its already sound and dynamic position in the German cruise market. Both the Boards of TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises have decided to order the two newbuilds. The Mein Schiff 4 is currently being built and with the now decided new orders of Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6 TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises are investing in touristic growth markets.
Bulkers to Benefit as China Iron Ore Appetite Grows
It has been quite awhile since the global bulk carrier market has had much to cheer about, but U.S. dry bulk shippers are set to post strong revenue growth in the next two years thanks to soaring Chinese demand for high-grade iron ore from Brazil and Australia. To combat severe winter smog, China has slashed iron ore output, pushing steel mills in the world's second biggest economy to import more high-grade ore. China also wants to make pollution control a priority for the next three years.
TUI Cruise Ship Keel Laid at STX Finland
On 25 February 2014, approximately nine months after the keel laying of TUI Cruises’ first newbuilding Mein Schiff 3, TUI Cruises and STX Finland celebrated the keel laying of Mein Schiff 4 in the Turku shipyard. Following the old shipbuilding tradition, the lucky coins were placed under the keel block of the ship. In the lucky coin ceremony, held on the bottom of the drydock, the shipowner was represented by Richard J. Vogel, CEO of TUI Cruises, CFO Frank Kuhlmann, Chief Engineer of Mein Schiff 3 Kostas Kallinikos and the designated Captain of Mein Schiff 3 Kjell Holm.
ITF Points Finger at Suspect Indonesian Crewing Agency
The International Transport Federation says it has reported a Taiwanese and an Indonesian crewing agent to Interpol for suspected human trafficking after 74 Indonesian fishers working on board seven Taiwanese vessels were abandoned in September, 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. It is alleged that the agents withheld the fishers’ wages, in some cases for over a year; produced counterfeit documents relating to crew members’ employment; and charged the fishers [fees] before they boarded the vessel.

Shell selects Endress+Hauser
Endress+Hauser will supply Shell with process measurement instruments, engineering and associated services. Both companies signed an Enterprise Framework Agreement (EFA) with an initial term of five years. flow, level, pressure and temperature measurements and for liquid analysis. The Swiss-based process measurement engineering specialist will be the primary supplier for these instrument types. Endress+Hauser will also provide to Shell project management, engineering, maintenance, repairs and site services in Shell facilities around the globe. Endress+Hauser and Shell have enjoyed a close business relationship for many years. Both companies have cooperated in a number of major projects, including the Pearl GTL project, the world’s largest gas-to-liquid plant in Qatar.
TUI Cruises Orders Cruise Ship
STX Finland Oy and TUI Cruises signed a contract for the design and construction of a 97,000 GT cruise vessel. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2014. The vessel has many environmentally friendly features, with a particular emphasis on the vessel’s energy efficiency. TUI Cruises has an option to order another ship subject to the decision of TUI Cruises shareholders. The vessel will be approx. 295 meters long and approx. 36 meters wide. The ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will serve maximum of 2,500 passengers and a crew of 1,000 persons. High balcony ratio will ensure that most of the passengers will have a possibility to enjoy their own balconies during the cruise.
