DSME Gets UK Shipyard Consulting Contract

S. Korea's DSME says it is to provide naval vessel production and management consulting services for British defense company BAE. Under the terms of the agreement, DSME will conduct investigations on 11 areas of shipyard operations for BAE Systems Surface Ships Ltd., a shipbuilding arm of BAE System Group, and suggest ways to improve its productivity. DSME explains that following the defense budget cut, BAE Systems Surface Ships had been looking for ways to cut back on the cost to build warships and reduce inefficiencies. BAE is known to have been impressed with DSME’s efficient construction system during the four MARS Tanker projects executed in 2012. Through this agreement, DSME says it has shifted its focus from selling hardware toward selling software consulting services.

Thai Offshore Patrol Boat Launched

A BAE Systems designed Offshore Patrol Vessel being built by the Royal Thai Navy has been launched at a ceremony at the Mahidol Adulyadej Naval Dockyard. The launch of HTMS Krabi on Friday (2 December) was conducted by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and comes just 15 months after the vessel’s keel laying ceremony in August 2010. Under a technology transfer agreement, signed in June 2009, BAE Systems supplied the design of its 90 metre Offshore Patrol Vessel, which its industrial partner Bangkok Dock has adapted to meet the specific requirements of the Royal Thai Navy.

BAE Systems: 5-Year Royal Navy Contract

BAE Systems won a five year contract to provide information services vital to the successful operation of the entire surface fleet for the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary in Portsmouth. The Configuration Accounting Service involves the management of a huge central information system, known as the Surface Ship Definition Database, which contains over five million records relating to Royal Navy ships. The company’s engineers work to ensure all data, including technical documents, design change guidance and spares lists for each ship, are accurate, up to date and easily accessible. Crucially, this information is required to coordinate all maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the fleet effectively.

UK Shipyard Orders Second Tube Bender

A second state-of-the-art tube bending machine has been ordered by BAE Systems Submarine Solutions to support the construction of the UK's Astute class nuclear-powered submarines. The new tube bending machine is an all-electric model with precision software-controlled servomotor movement, for bending tube diameters up to 76 mm. It also features an advanced laser measurement system that monitors any deviations to the programmed bend caused by the tubing material's 'springback' characteristics, and then automatically adjusts the bend to produce the correct shape. These features equip BAE Systems to handle the very demanding workload of the Astute submarine program.

Dragon (Type 45 Destroyer) Comes Home

Dragon, the fourth Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyer built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy, has set sail from the Clyde for the final time this week. Dragon set off from the company’s Scotstoun yard this morning, with a combined BAE Systems and Royal Navy crew, as she embarked on the journey to her new home port of Portsmouth. The vessel will be formally handed over to the Royal Navy at a ceremony on Wednesday 31 August. Despite the early start, around 100 employees came to watch as the ship they have worked on since in December 2005 made its final journey down the Clyde.

Construction Continues on Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier

Construction of the first Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier took a significant step forward today, as the final rings of the forward hull section came together for the first time at BAE Systems’ facility in Portsmouth Naval Base. Two huge ring sections of Lower Block 02 were joined together in a 30 minute move involving 26 remote controlled hydraulic transporters. Workers carefully manoeuvred a 3,700 tonne slice of the block over 25 metres across the company’s production hall, where it was carefully lined up to join the rest of the hull. The hull block is made up of five rings in total, with the first rings joined in April, today’s move marks the end of the three month process.

Royal Navy of Oman: New Ship Launched

The last of three corvettes under construction by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) was formally named in a launching ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base today. Employees and guests, including senior representatives from the RNO and UK Royal Navy, gathered at the naval base to watch Lt General Hassan Mohsin Al Sharaiqi, Inspector General of the Police and Customs of the Sultanate of Oman, formally name the RNO’s newest vessel, Al Rasikh. Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract for UK Aircraft Carriers

LONDON, March 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit has signed a full production contract for the Integrated Navigation Bridge System (INBS) for the U.K. Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carrier Programme. The company also signed a design phase contract for the Navigation Lights, Shapes and Sounds (NLSS). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine will build and deliver the complete INBS, including electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS-N (U.K.)) for the new aircraft carriers. The system will include navigation planning, electronic charts and radar displays, as well as a comprehensive set of sensors and software.
