Strong Vessel Demand Lifts Baltic Dry Index to Second Weekly Gain

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk sea freight index rose on Friday and posted a second consecutive weekly gain on the back of stronger demand across vessel segments.The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, rose to an over three-weeks high as it added 62 points, or 3.5%, to 1,820. On 9 October 2017, Orest Sychenikov, first Head of Novorossiysk Shipping Company, passed away at the age of 95. On 9 October 2017, we lost a highly educated man, a talented leader who made a massive contribution to the strengthening and development of Russian maritime navigation. Orest Sychenikov was born on 28 June 1922. In 1941, he was called up to the Red Army to fight in the Second World War, during which was seriously wounded in 1943. Following demobilization in September 1945, Orest was accepted into the Department of Marine Engineering at the Odessa Institute of Marine Fleet Engineers.

Ship Collision Kills Three in Bosphorus Strait

Three Turkish Coast Guard personnel were killed on Wednesday after their vessel collided with a bulk carrier in the Bosphorus strait, forcing officials to temporarily suspend traffic in the busy shipping lane. Their vessel capsized after colliding with the Tolunay, a Cook Island-flagged bulk carrier, which was sailing toward the Black Sea, shipping agent GAC said. Severe Weather Disrupts Black Sea Shipping

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) advises that thickening sea ice, resulting from particularly low temperatures across Eastern Europe, is causing disruption to shipping across the Black Sea. While relevant port authorities are working hard to keep shipping lanes open, vessels heading to Eastern Black Sea ports in Russia and the Ukraine are experiencing berthing delays. Black Sea Shipping Owes $95M

Ukraine's Black Sea Shipping company has $95 million in foreign debts which the government aims to restructure and pay off by next year. The Black Sea shipping company ran into trouble after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. Many ships were impounded in foreign ports for unpaid bills. The company is raising money by selling off parts of the ageing fleet. It now owns about 130 ships whose average age is 20-22 years compared to over 200 vessels five years ago.

Massive Platform Travels Through Bosphorus

Istanbul's Bosphorus straits were closed to shipping for several hours on Monday to allow a massive pipeline laying platform owned by Saipem to pass through into the Black Sea, shipping officials said. The Saipem 7000 entered the straits at around 9:45 am (0645 GMT) on its way to lay an undersea gas pipeline in the Black Sea as part of the Blue Stream pipeline that will carry Russian gas to Turkey. Officials expect the platform to exit the Straits early Monday evening. The Blue Stream project is a partnership between Turkey's Botas, Eni of Italy and Gazprom of Russia. - (Reuters)
