Operating on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from day one in service, the MV George III, the first of Pasha Group’s two new ‘Ohana Class’, Jones Act-qualified containerships, features a state-of-the-art engine, an optimized hull form, and an underwater propulsion system with a high-efficiency rudder and propeller. SW/TCH Maritime has announced its investment to construct and own the ‘Water Go Round’ e-ferry in collaboration with Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine (GGZEM).SW/TCH Maritime is a New York-based investment platform building the first fleet of zero-emissions maritime vessels in the US. GGZEM is a provider of turn-key hydrogen fuel cell power systems for ships.The 84-passenger e-ferry is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in Alameda, CA using private funding from SW/TCH and a $3 million grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) through the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District), the administrator of the grant.The $3 million grant comes from California Climate Investments initiative…

The advent of industry wide tightening of allowable sulfur emissions is getting nearer. Suddenly, with the deadline now little more than one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. JAX LNG said it has executed the remaining engineering and procurement contracts required to begin construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction and storage facility at Dames Point near the Port of Jacksonville. The JAX LNG liquefaction facility is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2017. Once completed, it will be outfitted with a 2 million-gallon storage tank with the capacity to produce in excess of 120,000 gallons of LNG per day. JAX LNG’s Jacksonville plant will be North America’s first small-scale coastal LNG facility and will include marine distribution capabilities utilizing North America’s first LNG bunker barge, Clean Jacksonville. “The LNG industry is seeing a steady growth in demand,” said Tim Hermann, president of Pivotal LNG.

North America’s first LNG bunker barge is scheduled to be launched in February of 2016, Clean Marine Energy LLC (CME) announced following a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) hosted tour at Conrad Shipyard in Orange, Texas. Roughly 200 industry partners participated in the tour in conjunction with the USCG Liquefied Gas Senior Executive Forum held at USCG Sector Houston on December 9. The 2,200 cubic meter barge hull construction is near complete and abrasive blasting and painting is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

ABS has been selected to class an LNG bunker barge under construction at Conrad Orange Shipyard, Inc, a division of Conrad Shipyard, LLC, for WesPac Midstream LLC and Clean Marine Energy LLC (CME), the classification society announced. The 2,200 cu m barge is scheduled for delivery in mid-2016 and will initially be deployed in Tacoma, Wash., to service shipowner Totem Ocean Trailer Express’s (Totem Ocean) Orca Class ro-ro vessels. The unit will then be relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., to serve parent company TOTE’s Marlin Class dual-fuel container vessels and other LNG-powered vessels in the Port of Jacksonville. Designed by Bristol Harbor Group Inc, the barge features a single tank equipped with the Mark III Flex cargo containment system supplied by GTT North America.

WesPac Midstream LLC (WesPac) and its affiliate Clean Marine Energy LLC (CME), announced a construction contract with Conrad Orange Shipyard, Inc., a division of Conrad Shipyard, LLC, to build the first dedicated LNG bunker barge for the marine market in North America. The first 2,200 cu. m. (cbm) barge is expected to be delivered in early 2016 and planned to initially be deployed in Tacoma, Wash., to service shipowner Totem Ocean Trailer Express’s Orca class RoRo vessels, in addition to other LNG-powered vessels.

In a move intended to help ease the financial burden on shipowners seeking to install scrubber systems to meet sulphur emissions legislation, Wärtsilä and Clean Marine Energy (Europe) Ltd. (CME) have signed a collaboration agreement that will provide a funding solution to drive the uptake of exhaust gas cleaning technology. The financing solution, similar to those in the building environment space, enables a shipowner to repay the cost of the scrubber system installation via a fuel adder, i.e. a fuel premium on the price of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by which the shipowner repays the cost of installing the scrubber. This provides a return from the differential between HFO and marine gasoil (MGO) for a period of four to six years, depending on price spreads.
