Clipper Tankers Selects KVH

Clipper Marine Services A/S of Copenhagen, Denmark, is the latest commercial maritime operation to take advantage of the broadband access and affordable service offered by KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI) and its compact TracPhone V7 satellite communications system and the mini-VSAT Broadband service. In the coming months, 22 of Clipper Tankers’ vessels will be equipped with KVH’s 24-inch (60 cm) TracPhone V7 antenna along with multiple voice service lines and broadband Internet, e-mail, and data access throughout the mini-VSAT Broadband network’s expanding global coverage area. Clipper will continue to benefit from its Inmarsat systems and service, however, thanks to the TracPhone V7’s full compatibility with Dualog software.

Three Shipping Companies Indicted for Covering Up Pollution

Three companies that own and operate an oceangoing chemical tanker named the M/T Clipper Trojan were indicted in connection with an attempt by crew members to cover up the illegal dumping of oily waste in international waters, the Justice Department announced. The 11-count indictment named Clipper Wonsild Tankers Holding A/S and Clipper Marine Services A/S, both of which are Danish companies that operate and manage the M/T Clipper Trojan, and Trojan Shipping Co. Ltd., a Bahamas company that is the registered owner of the M/T Clipper Trojan, as defendants. All three companies are part of The Clipper Group A/S, a global shipping consortium based in Denmark.

Response to Grounding of Clipper Lasco

The U. S. Coast Guard continues to coordinate the response to the grounding of the 645-ft. cargo ship Clipper Lasco just west of the designated anchorage area off Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fla. The vessel remains aground this evening as members of the unified command work to ensure that planned salvage operations do not cause further disruption to the ocean floor, are conducted as safely as possible, provide adequate resources for any contingencies that could arise and mitigate the risk of damaging the ship. Divers from Resolve Marine Group, the salvor contracted by representatives for the Clipper Lasco, surveyed the ship's hull and the ocean bottom. The survey revealed that the vessel did impact the reef and some coral.

Lasco Enters Agreement with Clipper Group

The Portland, Oregon based Lasco Shipping Co. enters into major agreement with Clipper Group of the Bahamas. Torben G. Jensen, Chairman of Clipper Group of the Bahamas and Kenneth M. Novack, Chairman of Lasco Shipping Co. of Portland, Oregon are very pleased to announce that Lasco has entered into an agreement pursuant to which it is to be acquired by Clipper Group. Lasco Shipping Co. owns and operates a 23 vessel fleet. In addition Lasco operates the Lasco Logger Pool. Clipper Group is the well known and dynamic Shipowner and time-charter operator domiciled in Nassau, Bahamas, with representation offices in the US, Europe and Far East. The Lasco fleet consists of Handysize, Handymax and Panamax bulk carriers - segments which are all among the strategic core activities of Clipper Group.

Wight Shipyard Delivers Ferries for London

Sydney has its Harbour Ferries, Hong Kong its Star Ferries and New York the instantly recognizable Staten Island Ferries. Add to that list London, for increasingly the fleet of MBNA Thames Clippers is becoming as identifiable with the British capital as its famous red double decker buses. Wight Shipyard Company has delivered to MBNA Thames Clippers the latest, most technically advanced and energy efficient fast ferries in the expanding London fleet; the 35 meter low wash catamarans Mercury Clipper and Jupiter Clipper.

ABS Approves Anyboat as External Specialist

Anyboat Marine Electronics has received ABS certification as a radio technician external specialist to conduct GMDSS radio station surveys, for ABS classed vessels. ABS approval included a review of Anyboat's Quality Assurance System, an audit of their facilities and a practical demonstration of services. Clipper Navigation, Inc. and John J. McMullen Associates have agreed to combine their operations to provide comprehensive ferry consulting services focused on high-speed ferries for North American markets. The joint venture, operating under the Clipper-McMullen banner, will provide a range of services from initial operating concepts through vessel selection and acquisition.

Clipper Vessels Certified by Lloyd’s Register

Danish shipping company joins vanguard of ship operators using the 50001 energy management standard. On Friday in Copenhagen, Lloyd’s Register presented Clipper Fleet Management with ISO 50001 certification issued by LRQA, Lloyd’s Register’s provider of independent business assurance. “To us, the ISO 50001 certification is a valuable recognition and documentation that we’re doing the right things within fuel efficiency and energy management,” says Kristian Morch, Group CEO, Clipper Group.

Coast Guard Responds to Grounding off Port Everglade

Coast Guard inspectors on board the Clipper Lasco have confirmed the 645-ft. cargo vessel has run aground just west of the designated anchorage area off Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fla. The Clipper Lasco is carrying more than 30,000 tons of bauxite and 323 metric tons of fuel. Coast Guard inspection and investigation teams on board continue to gather information to determine the cause of the grounding. It has not been determined on what type of bottom (sand, coral, mud, rocks) the vessel grounded and the extent, if any, of environmental damage. The Coast Guard is in close communications with the vessel owners, state and local partners and technical experts, and is establishing a unified command to coordinate salvage efforts.

Resolve Refloats Cruise Ship in Northwest Passage

Resolve Marine Group refloated the Clipper Adventurer cruise ship recently. The vessel had run aground on rocks in Coronation Gulf, in Canada's Northwest Passage on Friday, August 27. The Resolve salvage team deployed four tugs at high tide, to free the stranded vessel. The Clipper had sustained several breeches to the hull when it ran aground the rocks last month, with passengers onboard. The Canadian Coast Guard evacuated the passengers without incident before the salvage operations began.

Clipper Establishes New Supramax Pool

Clipper has established the Clipper Sapphire Pool, a new commercial pool for modern Supramax grab fitted bulk carriers between 52,000 and 58,000 deadweight. The new pool will commence operation immediately, with 16 vessels initially committed to join in early 2015, of which Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (Genco) has committed 50% of the ships and Clipper the balance. U.S. Postal Service Salutes Merchant Marine on New Stamps

The Postal Service will salute the U.S. Merchant Marine on four forever stamps July 28 at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend the 11:30 a.m. dedication ceremony that takes place in the Ackerman Auditorium, 300 Steamboat Rd. Since the founding of the republic, the United States has looked to the commercial maritime industry for much of its growth and security. This issuance pays tribute to the U.S. Merchant Marine, the modern name for the maritime fleet that has played this vital role.

Cruise West Announces Adds Ships, Itineraries

Cruise West announced that it has acquired the Yorktown Clipper and the Nantucket Clipper previously part of the Clipper Cruise Line fleet. The 138-guest Yorktown Clipper and 102-guest Nantucket Clipper are U.S.-flagged coastal cruise ships that will join Cruise West's fleet of American-owned vessels. The new ships will sail the 2006 itineraries on the East Coast, Great Lakes, Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico and Central America that were already published by Clipper Cruise Line, but under Cruise West ownership and management. Cruise West is the largest American small-ship cruise line and will now be operating 10 vessels accommodating 70 to 138 guests on itineraries in Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, on the Columbia River, in California Wine Country, the South Pacific, and Japan.

This Day in Coast Guard History – Oct. 16

1790-Contract entered into for the construction of the "first" of the 10 revenue cutters, Massachusetts, at Newburyport, Massachusetts. 1952-A Merchant Marine Detail was established at Yokohama, Japan to handle increased merchant marine problems occurring there as a result of the Korean Conflict. 1956- CGC Pontchartrain, on Ocean Station November, rescued the passengers and crew of Pan American Clipper Flight 943 after the clipper ditched between Honolulu and San Francisco. 1992-CGC Storis became the first foreign military ship to visit the Russian port of Petropavlosk since the Crimean War.  During the goodwill visit, Storis conducted joint operations with the Russian icebreaker Volga. Clipper Projects Heads Up New MPP Ship Pool

Denmark-based Clipper Projects sets up multi-purpose (MPP) pool, which will form an integrated part of the current Clipper Projects MPP fleet. The new pool will initially comprise 14 x 15-20,000 dwt MPP vessels, but it is the clear intention of the members to expand the pool with more members and tonnage ranging from 10-20,000 dwt. Clipper to Take Delivery of 2 Ultramax Newbuilds

Clipper Group announced it will take delivery of two SDARI64 newbuilding bulk carriers during the coming months from Sainty Shipbuilding in Yangzhou, China. The vessels, to be named Clipper Kalavryta and Clipper Kythira, were purchased as resales and will be technically and commercially managed by Clipper. The SDARI64s are next generation eco bulk carriers and designed to improve overall vessel performance. These particular vessels will in addition be delivered with special cranes with an above the average lifting capacity and grab volume. Both vessels are also equipped with the ballast water treatment system Electro Cleen System to meet new requirements and thus preventing spreading of invasive species between oceans.

Norborg Steps in as Clipper Group CEO

Clipper Group has appointed Peter Norborg new Group CEO, succeeding current chief Frank G. Jensen, who will continue with the company as Chairman of the Board. Norborg will commence work in Clipper on April 1, 2016. Norborg, 49, comes from a position as Chief Operating Officer at Switzerland-based open hatch/dry bulk company Gearbulk, a position he has held since 2012. Before that, he spent 14 years at D/S Norden, latest as Executive Vice President and Head of Dry Cargo division. Peter holds an EMBA from IMD Business School.

Effective September 1st, Clipper’s ro-ro activities will be headed by Group CEO Kristian Morch, and effective early 2014, Kristian Morch will also replace Per Gullestrup on the Board of Danske Færger.

FirstWave/Newpark Lands Diamond Offshore Job

FirstWave/Newpark Shipbuilding has been awarded a contract by Diamond Offshore Drilling of Houston, Texas for completion of upgrades to the drillship Ocean Clipper, which returned to Galveston for the additional upgrades on August 16. "We're pleased that Diamond brought Ocean Clipper back to our yard for this project," said Francis Fair, FirstWave's executive vice president Galveston Operations. "FirstWave performed work on Clipper earlier this year, and we appreciate Diamond's confidence in us to provide additional services for the vessel."

FRS Acquires Clipper, Plans North American Expansion

FRS has acquired a majority interest in Clipper. FRS is a global ferry and shipping group, currently operating 60 vessels in 12 countries, and carrier of more than 7 million passengers and 1.9 million vehicles last year on national and international ferry lines. Clipper, operator of Clipper Vacations, is a recognized company in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada, offering unique regional travel experiences, including high speed Victoria Clipper ferry services from Seattle to Victoria, and Seattle to San Juan Island.

Gibdock Performs Quick Freight Ferry Repair

Gibdock has redelivered the Seatruck Ferries container/ro-ro vessel Clipper Point on-time, after a fast turnaround 11-day renewal project for the Clipper Group-owned operator. The ship has subsequently been introduced to Seatrucks’ Irish Sea operations. Returning Gibdock customer Seatruck scheduled the 5,193dwt Clipper Point to arrive in the yard on September 18. The 142m long (23m beam) freight ferry left the yard after the job’s completion on September 30. Swiss-based Kuoni Travel Holding Ltd. finalized its $115-million acquisition of INTRAV, the U.S. luxury tour operator, and its subsidiary, Clipper Cruise Line, which are based in St. Louis. Effective immediately, Ian Coghlan will become CEO of both companies, replacing Paul H. Duynhouwer, who has acquired a majority stake in Clipper's two U.S.-flag ships, Nantucket Clipper and Yorktown Clipper. In addition, Duynhouwer will be the majority owner and CEO of New World Ship Management, LLC, formed to operate all four Clipper ships, including the two U.S.-flag ships, as well as Bahamian-registered Clipper Adventurer and Clipper Odyssey. Coghlan was educated in the U.K. and joined Kuoni in 1985 in the finance department.
