U.S. carrier in the Pacific Matson, Inc. has introduced a new containership service between the U.S. West Coast and ports in Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. Starting August 10, 2016, the shipper’s South Pacific Express (SPX) will for the first time link the its West Coast - Hawaii service with its South Pacific network. Using a dedicated ship to carry West Coast cargo transshipped at Honolulu, SPX will provide reliable, same-day-of-week South Pacific arrivals every 28 days, calling on Apia, Samoa; Pago Pago, American Samoa; Nuku'alofa, Tonga; Suva, Fiji and Lautoka, Fiji before returning to Honolulu. “We have sought for some time the right opportunity to link our networks in the northern and South Pacific in a way that enhances both operations…

Matson, Inc. today reported net income of $26.6 million, or $0.60 per diluted share for the quarter ended December 31, 2015. Net income for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 was $27.8 million, or $0.63 per diluted share. Consolidated revenue for the fourth quarter 2015 was $494.8 million compared with $443.5 million reported for the fourth quarter 2014. For the full year 2015, Matson reported net income of $103.0 million, or $2.34 per diluted share compared with $70.8 million, or $1.63 per diluted share in 2014. Consolidated revenue for the full year 2015 was $1,884.9 million, compared with $1,714.2 million in 2014. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that MOL cooperated in the transport of the “Tachinepta” float (*1) Samba Carnival (*2) Components of the float, weighing about 5 tons in all, were placed into 15 containers and loaded aboard an MOL-operated containership. The vessel departed the Port of Shimizu on November 25, 2014, and arrived at Santos, Brazil on January 7. The Tachinepta was then assembled by craftspeople who traveled to the site from Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. When the magnificent float was completed for the opening of the Carnival on February 13, it measured more than  featured in the  that began in Sao Paulo, Brazil on February 13. The year 2015 marks the 120th anniversary for signing the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation between Japan and Brazil.

Tokyo - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) announced the launch of a plan to regularly publish the results of several key performance indicators (KPI) for its Containership service globally in the following categories: Operations, Environmental, and Safety. MOL has established a set of goals for each of these KPI in an effort to offer industry-leading transparency to customers and to showcase MOL’s strength as a carrier providing high-quality service. In addition to the above Global KPI, MOL is planning to launch Regional KPI, which are more focused on the services required in each region. MOL has already been very transparent with its on-time performance, and now it is making a point to provide additional KPI results for customers.

At 8:00 am, on Groundhog Day, Wednesday, February 2, 2011, Maritime College will kick-off the 6th annual Groundhog Day Event, Conference on Cutting Edge Issues in Shipping. The event will take place in the lecture hall of the Science and Engineering Building, Maritime College campus, Throgs Neck, The Bronx, NY 10465. The day begins with a complimentary continental breakfast, registration and welcome. The event will be hosted and directed by co-chairs SUNY Maritime College professor and maritime attorney, Jeffrey A. MarAd has named James D. Pugh to head its Office of Marine Highways and Passenger Services in   Jim will focus on expanding the use of ’s coastal, intracoastal and inland waterways to reduce landside congestion, reduce energy consumption and increase opportunities for American mariners, shipbuilding and the overall economy. He will also oversee the office of Passenger Vessel Services, which was established to support the passenger and cruise industry and its multi-billion dollar contribution to the economy as well as the congestion relief that passenger ferries offer nationwide. Prior to this assignment, Jim was the Deputy Division Chief in the U.S. Coast Guard’s Domestic Ports Division.
