Port of Oakland’s container terminal operator, TraPac, concluded a USD 67 million waterfront expansion in January 2019 as it opened a new vessel berth to arriving container ships.The milestone signals completion of a two-year project at Oakland’s second-largest terminal that has nearly doubled TraPac’s footprint from 66 to 123 acres; boosted its fleet of ship-to-shore cranes from four to seven; and added a third 1,400-foot-long dock for berthing mega containerships.“We are grateful to dockworkers, truckers, carriers, cargo owners and all of our stakeholders for working with us during this buildout,” said TraPac Operations Vice President Brian Bauer.

Port of Rotterdam Authority has welcome initiatives from companies including BCTN, Kramer and Waalhaven Group for more efficient transportation of containers between the Port of Rotterdam deepsea terminals and the hinterland.BCTN is bundling freight in Alblasserdam from its eight terminals in the Netherlands and Belgium in order to offer point-to-point services to the deepsea terminals on Maasvlakte.Kramer and Waalhaven Group are bundling cargo at their own terminals in Rotterdam and offer clients daily point-to-point services between the Waal and Eemhaven and the deepsea terminals on Maasvlakte. The logistics surrounding the Port of Rotterdam are daunting. Eight deep sea terminals; 600 barges with 150 different owners; some 150,000 shippers from across Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany all relying on the port. Delivering fresh fruit, vegetables and other goods demands efficient, timely and reliable logistics chains. The Port of Oakland released a new 5-year strategic plan today that pairs business expansion with community benefits. Called “Growth with Care,” the plan envisions more jobs and economic stimulus as the Port grows. According to the strategic plan, Oakland cargo volume should reach 2.6 million 20-foot containers by 2022. The Port’s Oakland International Airport is expected to serve 14-to-15 million passengers annually by then. Both would be all-time highs for Oakland. Growing business volume should lead to more hiring, the Port said. The Port added that it would prioritize local residents in filling jobs. “We can grow, but we want our neighbors to grow with us,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Chris Lytle in a preamble to the 21-page strategic document.

A Port of Oakland executive outlined a $600 million spending plan here today for growth at his West Coast trade gateway. Maritime Director John Driscoll told a maritime audience that Oakland would increase trade volume by investing in new facilities and better infrastructure. The objective: more containerized cargo. “We’re building for growth in a shipping industry that is becoming more and more competitive,” Driscoll said at an American Association of Port Authorities conference. Driscoll said the Port would team with private developers and public agencies to modernize the Port’s infrastructure. He said investment from all three sources would be used to create new logistics capabilities in Oakland. It will also help eliminate bottlenecks that inhibit cargo flow, he said.
