Old Company with a Modern Vision

In 1994, 27-year-old Thomas B. Crowley Jr. faced the kind of challenge that few can imagine. With the untimely passing of his father, he had suddenly ascended to chairmanship of a diversified international organization employing over 5,000 people, operating more than 200 vessels, and generating annual revenues in excess of $1 billion. Just six years out of college at the time, the eyes of the maritime world were focused on the young man and his impending adventure, wondering how well he would take the reins of Crowley Maritime Corporation. Founded by his grandfather Tom Crowley in 1892, and run by his father Thomas B. Crowley since the mid-1960s, Crowley Maritime began with a single 18-ft rowboat servicing ships and sailors in San Francisco Bay.

Crowley Announces Enhancements to U.S. East Coast-Mexico Service

To better serve shippers moving products between the U.S. and Mexico, Crowley American Transport announced it plans to begin serving Mexico southbound nonstop from Jacksonville and will make Port Everglades the first port of call northbound from Progreso beginning in mid-June. Crowley's present vessel rotation has Jacksonville as the first northbound and southbound port of call in the service, followed by port calls in Port Everglades, Progreso, Tampico, Veracruz and Progreso before vessels return to Jacksonville. With the service enhancement, vessels will go directly from Jacksonville to Progreso, then call in Tampico, Veracruz, and Progreso before heading northbound to Port Everglades and then back to Jacksonville.

Crowley Consolidates Environmental, Safety and Quality Assurance Programs

Charles Nalen, vice-president of environmental, safety and quality assurance for Crowley Marine Services, will expand his role and direct these programs under contract to other Crowley Maritime Corp. subsidiaries worldwide. Programs will include the expanded use of the ISO 9000 and Q1 Quality Management System, as well as other safety and environmental protection measures. In his new capacity, Nalen will expand his department to provide the Crowley Marine Services ESQA program to Crowley American Transport and Crowley Logistics, as well as their respective subsidiaries. Under Nalen's management, CMS has seen a continued reduction in personal injuries and property damage.

Crowley Announces Restructuring

Crowley Maritime Corp. is planning a significant strategic restructuring that will result in a more decentralized ocean cargo transportation company once the sale of its South America liner services to Hamburg Sud is complete. Having completed this assignment, P. Elliott Burnside will leave the position of president of Crowley American Transport to establish his own industry consulting service, which Crowley will utilize. The company will not replace Burnside and will instead restructure its liner services into two major business units. Crowley To Form New Subsidiary

Crowley Maritime Corp. said that upon the sale of its South American liner services to Hamburg Süd, it will operate its remaining Caribbean and Latin American services under a new name - Crowley Liner Services. The wholly owned subsidiary of Crowley Maritime will be divided into two separate operating units, Crowley Liner Services - Puerto Rico/Caribbean and Crowley Liner Services - Latin America. The company has established a revised target date of November 1 for the sale of its South America liner services to Hamburg Sud who will continue to operate the South America services under the Crowley American Transport brand name.

Crowley Concludes Sale of S. America Services

Crowley Maritime Corporation last week concluded the sale of its South America liner services to Hamburg Sud. Crowley's business activities in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Colombia and Venezuela are now officially being operated under the name Crowley Liner Services, Inc. All other South America services previously owned by Crowley are now officially under the control of Hamburg Sud, which is operating the services under the name Crowley American Transport.
