Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has won a contract from the National Petroleum Construction Company of Abu Dhabi, UAE for dredging work related to the installation of an offshore gas pipeline of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company as well as to an existing offshore gas pipeline. Boskalis will dredge a more than 50-kilometre-long trench between Das Island and Ras Al Qila in onshore Abu Dhabi for the new pipeline installation. Dredging work is scheduled to commence in phases from this quarter onwards and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2017. A medium-sized trailing suction hopper dredger and a large cutter suction dredger will be deployed as well as backhoe dredgers for dredging in shallow water. Following installation, the pipeline will be backfilled.

Technip was awarded by Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) a contract for project management consultancy (PMC) services for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works of the Nasr Phase II Full Field Development project – Packages 1, 2 & 3. The Nasr Phase II Full Field Development project serves ADMA-OPCO’s overall strategic objective for the midterm total sustainable production target. The Nasr field is being developed to secure an annual average production of 65Kb/d of crude oil by using offshore process facilities, wellheads, pipelines and facilities on Das Island. The scope of work covers the overall management of the EPC phases under execution in United Arab Emirates, Singapore and South Korea.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) reported that at about 5:30 a.m. JST (00:30 local time) on Wednesday, July 28, west of the Strait of Hormuz at 26º27’ N 56º14’ E (Oman territorial waters), the VLCC M. Star owned by MOL, suffered hull damage caused by an explosion which seemed to be an attack from external sources. The degree and details of hull damage are currently under investigation but no serious injury was reported, although one of the crew was slightly injured, and no oil leaked from the hull. Further, M. Star continues her voyage, making for the UAE port of Fujairah, where the damage and its causes will be thoroughly investigated. M. Star took on crude oil Tuesday, July 27, at the UAE Port of Das Island, after which it departed for Chiba Port in Japan.

Apparently the design series and Hanjin's well-established reputation in this niche has proved attractive, as the company has, to date, logged orders for 24 ships of the new design. As mentioned above, its length is the maximum for Panama canal, i.e. 294 m. So it has been designed to move flexibly both in Pacific Ocean and in Atlantic Ocean through Panama canal, which is one of the main feature that makes it popular among the operator. This ship offers the maximum intake of 5,060TEU.

The 284.4 m, 19.5 knot ship embodies the hopes of a shipbuilding nation that is seeking to re-establish its presence in the LNG niche that it has not occupied for more than three decades, as the production of gas ships generally lays in the hands of Far East builders today. The ship is unique in many respects – not the least in that it was launched into the water, sliding down its building way in the traditional manner to great fanfare in the presence of thousands of guests, both local residents and VIPs from the shipping world.
