Helberg Receives AAPA Service Award

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) honored Davis Helberg, Executive Director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, with its ImPORTant Service Award, during a September 26 luncheon at the AAPA’s 91st Annual Convention at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. “We honor Davis for his experience, knowledge, leadership, eloquence and dedication,” said Chairman of the Board Dick Steinke, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, who presented the award. “He is widely respected for his knowledge of the public port industry. Davis’ counsel and insights, and literary skills, are unmatched by anyone in our industry. Individual recipients must have served on one or more of AAPA's technical or policy committees for a minimum of ten years…

First New Polish Boat Arrives on Great Lakes

The first of five new Polish ships built specifically for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway trade loaded its first U.S. grain cargo in the Port of Duluth-Superior. Bulk carrier Isa arrived at Duluth's AGP Grain, Ltd., to load about 22,000 tons of spring wheat and feed peas for Barcelona, Spain. Designed and constructed to serve ports in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system, Isa was delivered from a Japanese shipyard in April. Since then, two sister ships have been completed: Isolda in June and Isadora in early August. The fourth new ship is scheduled to enter service in December and the fifth is due in January. All five are owned and managed by the Polish Steamship Co., Szczecin, and represented in North America by Polsteam USA, New York City.
