EPA to Move Forward with Domestic Emissions Standards
With the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) adoption of new emissions standards for large diesel ships and their fuels, EPA can now move forward with a domestic rulemaking action under the Clean Air Act. When fully implemented, this will help reduce harmful emissions by 80 percent or more from large diesel ships, including those that are foreign-flagged operating in U.S. waters. As emissions decline from other transportation sources, ship emissions will become a larger part of the nation's pollution inventory. In 2001, oceangoing vessels contributed nearly six percent of nitrogen oxide (NOx), more than 10 percent of particulate matter (PM), and about 40 percent of sulfur dioxide (SOx) to the nation's air pollution from mobile sources.

Mitsubishi to Build Diesel Oil Import Terminal in Australia
Japanese trading house Mitsubishi Corp said it is entering Australia's diesel market by building a $103 million gas oil import terminal to tap growing demand and as a closure of several refineries has squeezed domestic supply of the fuel. Mitsubishi's move comes as Australia is turning into a playground for global oil traders, who are snapping up storage tanks and terminals as they bet on it becoming Asia's top importer of oil products, with demand rising and old, inefficient refineries closing. "The terminal will be the foundation for Mitsubishi to launch a diesel fuel import, sales and distribution business in Australia which it expects to show robust growth on the back of increasing demand in energy, resource, transport and industrial sectors," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

Pipavav Shipyard in Talks to Set Up Diesel Engines Factory
India’s newest private shipbuilding firm,Pipavav Shipyard Ltd, is the latest in a growing list of firms looking to enter the business of making diesel ship engines in an attempt to meet growing demand for these in India and in other parts of the world, and is talking to two multinational firms for a partnership. Last week, Pipavav Shipyard started work on the first four of 26 Panamax bulk carriers that have been ordered by Norwegian, French and Greek fleetowners for a total of $1.1 billion (Rs4,360 crore). The contract makes Pipavav the world’s second biggest Panamax size shipbuilder by order size after Japan’s dry bulk cargo shipbuilding specialist Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

Jensen Maritime wins Design & Engineering Contract for U.S. Cruise Ships
Jensen Maritime was recently selected to provide detailed design and production engineering services for two, 100 passenger, U.S. flagged, coastal cruise ships for Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. The twin screw diesel ships, will be built at the Washington state shipyard of Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB) and have planned delivery dates of second quarter 2017 and 2018. Once complete, the $94.8 million duo will operate tours between Baja, Costa Rica and Panama during the winter months and southeast Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Canada during the summer months.
Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities
Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.
EPA Provides $650K for Diesel Engine Refits
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) with $650,000 to reduce diesel emissions from engines on up to eight vessels operating in the Puget Sound region. The project will provide vessel owners with incentives to scrap and replace 12-19 old Tier 0 engines with newer, more-efficient and lower-emission Tier 3 engines on six to eight harbor vessels operating in Puget Sound, Lake Union and Lake Washington. Combined with the mandatory match of $891,000, the total project cost is $1,541,000.
Emsys Monitoring Technology for Emissions Regs
Hefty fines, detention and possible arrest are looming for ship owners/operators who fail to meet new ship emissions requirements. In accordance with MARPOL (Marine Pollution) Annex VI regulations, new Emissions Control Area (ECA) regulations for sea areas within 200 nautical miles from the coasts and ports of the U.S. and Canada go into effect on August 1, 2011. Even with an exemption clause that extends the regulations enforcement date to Aug. 1, 2012, the time window is short for outfitting thousands of vessels.
New Pilot Boat Delivered to Alabama Pilots
The Alabama Pilot, Inc. in Mobile, Ala., has taken delivery of Dixey, a newly built Chesapeake Class pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. With length overall of 53.6’, beam of 17.8’, and draft of 4.8’, the all-aluminum pilot boat features the C. Raymond Hunt-designed Deep-V hull. It is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18 diesel engines, each delivering 671Bhp at 2100 rpm and a top speed of 27 knots. A Humphree interceptor trim-tab control system was installed at the transom.

It’s Electric: Charging Asia’s First E-ferry
Innovative charging technologies connect Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. The charging solution was supplied by Swiss based engineering firm Cavotec, who said the technology ensures safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth.

VLCC's Used for Asia-Europe Diesel Liftings
Total charters VLCC to move diesel from Asia to Europe; Vitol ships diesel from Asia to Europe in Suezmax. At least two companies are planning to ship diesel in bigger-than-usual tankers from Asia to Europe in what traders said is a rare move as cheap oil drives up diesel supply and slowing economies dent demand. French oil major Total has provisionally chartered the very large crude carrier (VLCC) Alice on a six-month time charter to ship ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) from Asia to Europe, traders and shipbrokers said. A VLCC can carry roughly 2 million barrels of oil.

Largest-ever Diesel Cargo Heads to Europe
Europe is expected to receive its largest-ever diesel cargo after French refiner Total booked a super tanker to sail to the region even as it faces brimming storage tanks and wilting demand. Total has chartered the newly-built very large crude carrier (VLCC) tanker Alice to ship 270,000 tonnes of diesel, three times the typical cargo size on the route, from Asia to the port of Antwerp in Belgium, according to shipping data and Reuters ship tracking. MAN Diesel Power for NCL Cruise Ships
On September 15, the Norwegian Gem will be transported from the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. The latest luxury liner in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet will be powered by five 12V48/60B engines from MAN Diesel, the Augsburg-based large-bore diesel engine specialist. The engines' combined output is 97,800 hp. In 2004, MAN Diesel also supplied five engines for the liner's sister ship Norwegian Jewel. In a field trial in May 2007, one of the engines was converted to common rail technology during the crossing from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. With the two new ship orders from Celebrity Cruises and DCL, common rail technology is already becoming the standard.
