Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) informs that it has hosted a STEM Workforce Call-to-Collaboration conference to help increase the quality of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and the quantity of STEM-educated graduates for the future workforce. The two-day conference featured insight from HII President and CEO Mike Petters, Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who provided a keynote address via video. Sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association and the Aerospace Industries Association, the quarterly Call-to-Collaboration meetings aim to foster regional and statewide communication between education stakeholders and STEM employers such as HII.

DNV GL Maritime Academy informs it has joined with the World Maritime University (WMU), founded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to offer a new Postgraduate Diploma for maritime managers. DNV GL consier that managers in today’s extremely competitive maritime industry need to cope with the current technical, regulatory and commercial developments. They must also be able to anticipate future developments and react in advance. It is essential that they have up-to-date skills and comprehensive knowledge, if they are to retain their competitive edge. Hence they introduce the new executive education program. This unique Postgraduate Diploma is designed to provide a boot camp for managers.

Women have a significant role to play in the development of the maritime sector in the Caribbean, region but in order to survive and thrive they need access to professional training and education systems backed by internationally recognized and enforced employment standards. This was the message two leading Caribbean shipping industry executives delivered to the “Maritime Women: Global Leadership 2nd International Conference” held by the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Sweden this week, March 31-April 1.

Only months after graduation ceremonies were held on campuses across the nation, approximately 85 percent of 2008 graduates with merchant marine licenses from the United States Merchant Marine Academy and six state maritime academies have found employment afloat in the maritime industry or in the U.S. military, according to data released by the Maritime Administration. “This data indicates that the job market for merchant marine officers remains robust. There is a growing, worldwide demand for fully-trained merchant marine officers and licensed mariners. Excellent training combined with ongoing global trade expansion will continue to make the graduates of maritime colleges among the most qualified and employable mariners in the world,” said U.S. Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton.
