GE Ships LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine for US Navy

GE's Marine Solutions division said it has shipped a LM2500 marine gas turbine propulsion module that will help power the U.S. Navy's 75th DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division will construct this new destroyer with U.S. Navy Flight III upgrades incorporated. Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven

A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.

Apostleship of Sea (AoS) port chaplain Reverend Roger Stone has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honour’s List 2018 for services to the pastoral care of seafarers. Roger has served as port chaplain for the seafarers’ charity since June 2010 and has provided pastoral, spiritual and welfare support to hundreds of crew members who arrive on ships at ports along the South Coast of England. Roger says he is truly honoured and humbled to receive the British Empire Medal from Her Majesty The Queen.

News: Barge/Refinery Explosion Shakes Staten Island, NY

The maritime industry makes local headlines when something goes wrong, but the headlines on February 21 went national. In a spectucular eruption of flame and smoke, the like of which New York had not seen since 9/11, an estimated million gallons of gasoline erupted from a barge near the southwestern tip of Staten Island. The barge captain and mate were killed in the 10 A.M. explosion, and a nearby worker at the ExxonMobil facility suffered third-degree burns. The New York Times the next day showed a plume of dense black smoke over the city, but reported that the calamaty had been quickly controlled. Almost certaiinly it was not the work of terrorists and, being a gasoline fire, The Times reassured, it could burn itself out without leaving a slick to endanger the birds.

Boxships Collide in Port Klang, Malaysia

The container ships MOL Empire and Northern Democrat collided at around 1430 LT Aug 1 in Westport harbor at Port Klang, Malaysia, reportedly while mooring. Container or containers fell overboard, also port crane was damaged. It is understood, that both vessels suffered slight damages. The reason for the accident was higher speed and strong wind, which caused drifting of the container carrier MOL Empire over the already berthed Northern Democrat, which was performing cargo handling operations at same time. The both vessels were detained for inspection and until further investigation.

Wärtsilä Hosts Student Training Ship from SUNY Maritime

Wärtsilä hosted the State University of New York, Maritime College and its Cadets on board the College’s training ship, the Empire State VI during their mid-July visit to Trieste, Italy. The students were part of the second term of the annual 2013 Summer Sea Team. The ship’s visit to the historic city was no ordinary port call. Upon arrival of the ship in Trieste’s harbor, leaders from Wärtsilä  welcomed the group of close to 600, including Maritime Cadets, a contingent of Cadets from Maine and Texas Maritime Academies, faculty, crew and SUNY Maritime College President, RADM Wendi B.

Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil

Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. The MoU, signed with Petrocity, parent company of a new port facility, will see Wärtsilä develop a harbor tug design based on its recently launched Wärtsilä HYTug, which features hybrid propulsion and energy storage using batteries. Empire WaterLink Offers Alternative Airport Transportation

In order to ease the inconvenience of the New York-Metro area's congested roadways due to an increased passenger base, Empire WaterLink (Empire) has leased a building located in downtown South Amboy, N.J. to handle the expansion of its planned fleet of high-speed intermodal ferry operations for airport passengers and parcel airfreight throughout the tri-state area. The new high-speed low-wake ferries, each with a five-member crew, are capable of carrying 300 passengers plus luggage. In due time, the vessels will operate on an hourly basis to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from each terminal - seven days a week, 17 hours a day.

German Boxship Collides with Crane at Keelung Port

A German-flagged container ship Hansa Meersburg ran into a crane while berthing at Keelung Port, Taiwan resulting in the damage of containers and port infrastructure, CNA reported. The 2007-built freighter, operated by German-based Leonhardt and Blumberg hit and damaged a berth crane valued at NT$200 million (US$6.78 million) as it was sailing into the harbor. In addition to the damage sustained by the crane, a pier was also damaged, suffering a hole three meters wide and two meters deep.

Washburn & Doughty Wins Hybrid Tug Orders

East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction. The vessel will be built as a Harbor Assist Vessel as defined in USCG Subchapter M and admeasure less than 200 gross tons U.S. regulatory tonnage. Juneau Moves Ahead with $50m Dock Plan

According to reports, Juneau leaders on continued to move forward with plans for a $50m cruise ship dock improvement plan that would allow two modern ships to dock at the same time by 2010. To do that, Port Director John Stone said some fees will increase dramatically. The city's Docks and Harbors Board is proposing construction of a floating berth in front of the current cruise ship dock that would accommodate two big ships. Use of the city dock now costs a ship 5.5 cents per ton to dock, but paying for the new improvements will boost that to 30 cents a ton. Other fees will change, however, including some going down. As an example, Stone said that means the new 1,868-passenger, 951-foot cruise ship Zuiderdam, which now costs $20,394 to dock in Juneau, would cost $28,233 in 2010.

NASSCO Delivers Fourth Product Carrier

On July 13, General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), delivered the fourth ship of its State-class product carriers to American Petroleum Tankers, LLC, a joint venture of the Blackstone Financial Group.  The ship is named Empire State, the state nickname of New York. NASSCO began constructing the Empire State in January 2009.  At a length of 600.4 ft, the double-hulled ship has a cargo capacity of approximately 331,000 barrels.  The Empire State will be used initially to carry refined petroleum products for the Department of Defense under a commercial charter.

The U.S. Coast Guard towed a disabled catamaran with one person aboard Tuesday after the boat lost steering approximately six miles offshore from Cape May Inlet. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Cape May received a mayday call from the captain of the 44-foot Empire State reporting the boat lost steering, and the man needed assistance. A 45-foot Response Boat ─ Medium crew from the station responded, and once on scene, took Empire State into a 300-foot stern tow. While in tow, the boat’s operator and a station crewmember manually steered the boat through six- to eight-foot waves.

SUNY Maritime College’s training ship has returned to campus Tuesday after nearly two months aiding hurricane relief workers in Florida and Puerto Rico. The ship Empire State VI was used to provide power, housing, food and water to emergency relief workers, first in Florida following Hurricane Irma, then in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Empire State VI is owned by the Maritime Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and used by Maritime College throughout the year to educate and train future maritime industry professionals.

Matson Increases Neighbor Island Barge Capacity

Matson, Inc. said its subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has replaced one of its three barges dedicated to serving Hawaii's neighbor island ports with a newer, larger barge that will improve service levels. The container barge Columbia, to be renamed Mauna Loa in honor of the barge it replaces, is now Matson's largest barge. At 360 feet long, with a beam (width) of 100 feet and cargo carrying capacity of 12,600 tons or 500 TEU, it is 12 feet longer and 40 feet wider than the barge it replaces, with the capacity to carry 180 more TEU or nearly 8,000 tons more cargo. Built in 2012 by Gunderson Marine and classified as a Deck Cargo Barge with approximately 33,000 square feet of deck cargo space, the vessel's design enables swifter and more fuel efficient transits.

WWII Museum’s PT-305 Sails Again

Commercial workboat philanthropy on display on PT-305: WWII Museum’s PT-305 sails again after a far reaching donor-funded restoration. In March, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans launched its reconstructed PT-305, built locally by Higgins Industries in 1943. The museum acquired the boat known as the USS Sudden Jerk in 2007, restoration began in 2009, and it now sails Lake Pontchartrain as an interactive exhibit. PT-305, with a fifteen-man crew, belonged to a 12-ship squadron operating in the Mediterranean from 1944 until the war ended in 1945.

NY Port to Install Shore Power Technology

Construction of the East Coast’s first shore power port facility will move forward toward a 2014 completion following today’s action by the Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners. The project will create 30 jobs and result in $22 million in economic activity. At its monthly meeting, the Board authorized additional funds provided by the Empire State Development Corporation needed to complete the $19.3 million shore power port facility. The project will allow cruise ships serving the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal to plug in to a more environmentally friendly electrical landside power source rather than operating on their diesel generated power while at the dock.

SUNY Maritime Sails to the Rescue

Sailing along the Atlantic coastline from New York , the Empire State rounded Florida , dodged Hurricane Ophelia and cut a path along the same waters that Hurricane Katrina had sliced in its rampant urgency. On board were faculty and staff from SUNY Maritime College , which operates the 565-foot training ship. The Empire State is owned by the federal government, which activated the vessel after Hurricane Katrina. The ship's operators are trading their normal lives to provide disaster relief, leaving their own homes to provide one for the homeless. The Empire State is now serving as a floating hotel for uprooted oil rig workers who are working 24 hours a day to repair a New Orleans oil refinery.

MarAd Ends Hurricane Relief Effort

The Training Ship Empire State left New Orleans on Friday, March 3, marking the end of an unprecedented six-month mission for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MarAd). Ten of the agency’s ships were activated to aid in recovery and relief efforts in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This marked the first time the ships of MARAD’s Ready Reserve Force were activated at the request of the Secretary of Transportation to deal with a domestic emergency, and the first time training ships provided by MARAD to State maritime academies were pressed into service to provide food and shelter.
