Erie Shipbuilding to Undergo Expansion

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. jobs to the local economy over the next three years. tax credits. for more than 15 years. Erie Shipbuilding Gets $2.5m State Grant

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell announced $17m in capital grants to support projects in Erie that will bolster the city’s economy and expand the region’s tourism industry. Among the grants include $2.5m to Erie Shipbuilding LLC to help the company expand operations at the former Litton Industries shipyard and dry dock. The company will, primarily, convert existing vessels to tug barges, but will also build new ships for VanEnkevort’s Tug and Barge Inc. The company plans to expand VTB’s fleet by five to six vessels within three years. The state grant will help the company with capital expenditures as it seeks to acquire the necessary equipment to outfit the shipyard property.

DonJon Shipbuilding, Repair on Lake Erie

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a global marine services provider based in N.J., announced the creation of Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, LLC (DSR). Through an agreement with the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority and the acquisition of the assets of the former Erie Shipbuilding, LLC, DSR will engage in shipbuilding and repair on its 44-acre site on Lake Erie, Pa. The acquisition adds shipbuilding and repair to Donjon’s existing spectrum of marine services, including dredging, salvage, heavy lift and towing. DSR’s facility, equipped with a 1,250-ft by 120-ft by 22-ft dry dock, is the largest shipyard of its kind on the Great Lakes.

Port of Erie Receives $1.52M for Dredging

The Port of Erie is located on the southeast shore of Lake Erie in a natural bay formed and sheltered by Presque Isle peninsula. Its harbor entrance channel is narrow and 29 feet deep. Dredging is a constant concern. In fact, dredging of harbors around the Great Lakes has been a hot button issue for the maritime industry. Funding is provided by the Harbor Maintenance Tax which is a user fee collected by the federal government to ensure the adequate maintenance and operations of waterway infrastructure by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. On Tuesday, March 4, the Corps released their FY14 budget. It included an additional $25 million for Great Lakes harbors - $13.8 million of which will be dedicated to dredging.

Donjon Shipbuilding Gets Tank Barge Order

Erie, Pennsylvania shipyard, Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair, reported that Seabulk Tankers has placed an order with them for a petroleum and chemical barge. The wholly owned subsidiary of Donjon Marine Co. Inc. whose main office is in Hillside, N.J., said they have entered into a contract with Seabulk Tankers to construct one 185,000 barrel coastal petroleum and chemical barge, which will become the barge component of an Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) unit. Delivery is expected in the first half of 2016. J. Arnold White, President and CEO of Donjon Marine Co.

Imabari to Acquire Minaminippon Shipbuilding

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has reached an initial agreement to acquire compatriot Japanese shipbuilder Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The takeover, which remains subject to further discussions before the deal is concluded, would take effect April 1, 2018. Minaminippon’s present shareholders include Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (25 percent) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (24 percent).

Pedestal Crane Barge for New York Power Authority

When the wicked winter weather begins to blow off Lake Erie, a shipbuilder and a crane company in Cleveland, Ohio, and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will be glad they cooperatively commissioned and built a barge-mounted pedestal crane for the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom Operations in Buffalo, N.Y., to help reduce potential damage to hydroelectric power plants caused by Lake Erie’s inevitable ice. The NYPA asked Great Lakes Shipyard, a member of The Great Lakes Group in Cleveland, to fabricate and deliver a new 80-foot by 34-foot pedestal crane barge for the ice boom operation.

Donjon to Build Hopper Barges for Sterling

Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, was recently awarded a contract by Sterling Equipment of Quincy, Massachusetts to construct two hopper barges, with an option for a third. The principal dimensions of these barges are 225’ long x 42’ wide x 12’ deep. Delivery of the barges is to be made by the middle to end of August 2013. Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair's facility, equipped with 1,250 ft. by 120 ft. by 22 ft. dry dock, is one of the largest shipyards of its kind on the Great Lakes. The facility includes 4,000 ft. of pier space and more than 200,000 square ft.

Shipwreck Science Program Begins

Fifteen talented Erie area high school students in the Minority College Experience / Women in Science and Engineering (MCE/WISE) program through Penn State Erie, participated in the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies' (BCMS) first expedition of the Shipwreck Science Program on June 12, 2009. BCMS is an eleven year old non-profit community based organization in Erie, Pennsylvania that uses hands-on projects including sailing, boatbuilding, navigation and environmental science to teach and reinforce traditional subjects.

200 Years of Erie Canal History

April 2011 marks the 200th anniversary of the key decisions for the construction of the Erie Canal, a monumental public works project that transformed the economy of New York State. Two centuries ago, on April 8, 1811, the state Legislature approved a measure that set into motion the construction of the Erie Canal. This followed the delivery of a report on March 2, 2011 of a report by the original Commission. Brian U. No Discharge Zone Declared in Lake Erie

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation today declared the New York side of the Lake Erie shore line a “no discharge zone,” which means that boats are completely banned from discharging sewage into the water. The EPA reviewed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s proposal to establish a no discharge zone for the lake and determined that there are adequate facilities in the area for boats to pump out their sewage. Boaters must now dispose of their sewage at one of the lake’s specially-designated pump-out stations. This action is part of a joint EPA and New York State strategy to eliminate the discharge of sewage from boats into the state’s waterways.

This year's festival marks the 200th anniversary of the building of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet in Erie and his victory at the Battle of Lake Erie off of Put-In-Bay, Ohio, Sept. 10, 1813. USS Lake Erie Assists Distressed Mariners

Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) provided assistance to 25 mariners in the early hours of March 19, after receiving a distress call from a civilian ship taking on water. Lake Erie deployed a rescue and assistance team aboard its rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB), and after embarking the distressed vessel, the eight-member team began dewatering the ship and searching for the source of the flooding. "After making sure everyone was alright, we noticed water was coming in at about 1,200 gallons a minute," said Lt.

One of young America's most ambitious engineering projects opened on this date in 1825 — allowing goods to flow from Lake Erie through New York State to the Hudson River. It was the Erie Canal, 363 miles long, four feet deep and 40 feet wide, with tow paths for mules to pull the barges along. The super highway of its day, the Erie Canal opened up the Western Frontier and made New York City into the nation's number one port. Today, the canal's importance has shifted to recreation. America's waterways — especially the Mississippi River — carry an increasing amount of freight, totaling close to two and a half billion tons each year. Petroleum products are by far the largest category of freight moved on the water.

Seacor and Donjon Christen Erie-Built Tug-Barge Unit

Erie, Pa. – Seajon LLC, a partnership between Seacor Holdings Inc. and Donjon Marine Co. Inc., held an open house and christening of the 34,000-ton capacity self-unloading articulated tug and barge (ATB) Ken Boothe Sr. and Lakes Contender. This ATB is the first of its kind to be built in Erie, Pennsylvania, since 1972. Donjon reopened the yard in December, 2009. "We are so pleased to christen this state-of-the-art ATB here in Erie, and to share in the success with our partner Seacor.

U.S. Navy Aegis Weapon System Guides Standard Missile to Target Intercept

The Lockheed Martin developed Aegis Weapon System successfully intercepted a ballistic missile target outside the earth's atmosphere during its descent phase of flight today. The Aegis Weapon System, aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70), and range sensors confirmed a direct hit of the missile target by a Raytheon-developed Standard Missile (SM)-3 over the Pacific Ocean. In addition to USS Lake Erie, the guided missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59) also participated in today's test. USS Russell provided target track information to the USS Lake Erie and components of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense element. This test, Flight Mission (FM)-6, marks the fourth time that the Aegis Weapon System successfully guided its Standard Missile-3 to a ballistic missile target.

American Steamship Charters ATB

American Steamship Compnay charter New Articulated Tug Barge American Steamship Company (“ASC”), a subsidiary of GATX Corporation (NYSE:GMT), announced its charter of a newly constructed Articulated Tug Barge (“ATB”). David W. Foster, president of ASC, said, “We are very pleased to add this new ATB, designed to transport dry-bulk commodities, to our fleet and look forward to commencing its operation on the Great Lakes during the upcoming sailing season. This U.S.-flagged 10,700 horsepower tug and 740 foot self-unloading barge with a cargo capacity of 34,000 tons, constructed by Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, LLC of Erie, PA, will allow ASC to more efficiently serve our customers.”

Donjon Marine Appoints Paul Deterding

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a marine services provider based in New Jersey, has named Paul Deterding General Manager of Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, LLC, located in Erie, PA.  Deterding will oversee the daily operations of the facility, including production, engineering, plant maintenance and administrative duties. Deterding has more than 25 years of experience in the marine, electrical and fire protection industries, serving most recently as Vice President and Part Owner of SEC Fire, LLC, and before that as Operations Manager for Hiller Systems, Inc.  He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1972-1984 as an electrician, recruiter, instructor and Quality Assurance Supervisor. He is a graduate of Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL.

ATB Barge Project for Murray & Associates

Murray & Associates, LLC has been commissioned to deliver a comprehensive design package for an 185,000 BBL Chemical Tank Barge new construction project. The ABS SafeHull barge is an articulated tug and barge type utilizing an Intercon Model 50 coupler system. It has a length of 584 ft and a breadth of 78 ft. Murray & Associates has been engaged from concept to detailed design, encompassing structure, stability, piping and mechanical systems, arrangements drawings as well as 3D structure and pipe lofting.

NY Canals to Temporarily Reopen

Open from Oswego to Waterford to Allow Stranded Boats to Reach Destinations. Sections of the Erie Canal and the Oswego Canal will temporarily reopen for a two-week period that begins Sunday, November 20, the New York State Canal Corporation announced. The eastern portion of the Erie Canal has been closed to navigation in the Mohawk Valley since major flooding in late August damaged several canal structures. To allow transient marine traffic to reach their destinations this season, portions of the canal system will reopen from November 20 through December 3.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio Provides Dry Docking Services to Erie’s Flagship, the US Brig NIAGARA. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Historical and Museum Commission had Erie’s Flagship, the US Brig NIAGARA, delivered to Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio this week. In 1992, Great Lakes Shipyard installed auxiliary engines in the Brig and since then has been contracted to conduct the NIAGARA’s routine inspections in compliance with federal regulations, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the American Bureau of Shipping.
