Singapore Bans Open-Loop Scrubbing

Golden Ocean Group Reports Profit in Q2
Golden Ocean Group Limited (GOGL) reported a net income of $9.0 million for the second quarter of 2018, compared to net loss of $12.0 million for the second quarter of 2017.The Norway based dry bulk shipping company has entered into a $120 million loan facility to refinance 10 vessels on favorable terms. P&O Cruises' Ventura Gets a Facelift
The P&O Cruises Grand-class cruise ship Ventura has completed a two-week docking at Damen Shiprepair Brest. Launched in 2008, this was the first visit of the 290-metre, 116,000 DWT vessel to the yard, where she underwent a regular docking together with a range of maintenance works. Deltamarin Bags Ro-pax Design Contract
Deltamarin Ltd has signed a contract with Chinese Guangzhou Shipyard International Co, Ltd (GSI) for consultancy and engineering services for the DFDS ro-pax ferries. Deltamarin earlier carried out contract design of the ship concept for GSI in cooperation with the owner. Deltamarin will provide the yard with basic (approval) and detail design together with Safe Return to Port (SRtP) documentation. The contract covers all disciplines and all areas. The value of Deltamarin’s contract with GSI is about €5 million ($6.2 million).
Finnlines Continues to Add Capacity
Finnlines said it is continuing capacity expansion efforts in response to growing volumes. The Baltic Sea ro-ro and passenger vessels operator has purchased MS Europalink as reports further progress in its vessel lengthening program. Protecting Marine Diesel Engines from Cat Fines Damage
DNVPS has warned that cat fines levels are increasing year by year. Lower sulphur marine fuels have even higher cat fines levels than typical heavy fuel oils (HFO). The ExxonMobil MobilGard lube oil monitoring service, concludes that 43 percent of all ships “have a potentially catastrophic issue with cat fines,” based on testing more than 400,000 marine diesel oil samples. So, cat fines are a very serious threat to every ship burning heavy fuel oils. What is the solution? Many have studied this serious problem, and all have come to the same basic conclusion: eliminating the 3 to 5 micron cat fines (and larger) will prevent the cat fines from damaging fuel injection pumps, fuel injectors, piston rings, pistons, cylinder liners, exhaust valve seats and stuffing box seals.
Nearly Half of Interlake Fleet Fit with Scrubbers
The M/V Mesabi Miner has sailed from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., becoming Interlake Steamship Company’s fourth self-unloading bulk carrier to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. Interlake became the first U.S.-flag fleet to test freshwater scrubbers on the Great Lakes in April 2015 after pioneering the emission-reduction technology on its M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar. In 2016, the company outfitted its first thousand foot vessel, the M/V James R. Barker, and its 826-foot M/V Lee A. Tregurtha in its second phase of exhaust gas scrubber implementation.
Case Study: 18-day Exhaust Gas Scrubber Install
Goltens was contracted by a large cruise vessel owner to undertake the installation of two exhaust gas scrubbers on one of its ships to comply with sulfur emissions regulations. The vessel is powered by four GMT/Sulzer 16ZAV40S and two GMT/Sulzer 12ZAV40S diesel electric generating sets. The project involved the evaluation, planning, design and installation of two 10+ meter long exhaust gas scrubber towers on Diesel Generators #1 and #2 with a deadline to complete the operation before the end of the vessel’s dry dock period in a U.S. port.
Matson Declares 4Q EPS of $0.60, FY EPS $2.34
Matson, Inc. today reported net income of $26.6 million, or $0.60 per diluted share for the quarter ended December 31, 2015. Net income for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 was $27.8 million, or $0.63 per diluted share. Consolidated revenue for the fourth quarter 2015 was $494.8 million compared with $443.5 million reported for the fourth quarter 2014. For the full year 2015, Matson reported net income of $103.0 million, or $2.34 per diluted share compared with $70.8 million, or $1.63 per diluted share in 2014.
Interlake Steamship Begins 2016 Sailing Season
The Interlake Steamship Company’s Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder, an articulated tug-barge unit (ATB), departs winter layup today to begin early-season shuttles of iron ore for ArcelorMittal, an integrated steel and mining company with blast furnaces at the head of the Cuyahoga River. A workhorse of Interlake’s nine-vessel fleet, the combined 711-foot Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder is one of Interlake’s two River-Class vessels, a designation given to ships that can traverse the narrowest harbors of the Great Lakes.

Oberstar, the Interlake Steamship Company has announced its plans to expand its emission-reduction efforts to one-third of its fleet by installing similar scrubber systems on the M/V Lee A. Tregurtha and M/V James R. Barker early next year. First Steel Cut for Norwegian Bliss
Norwegian Cruise Line is celebrating the cutting of the first piece of steel for Norwegian Bliss, the line’s sixteenth vessel and the first one designed for the ultimate Alaska cruising experience. Low Bunker Prices Benefit Ship Owners in 2015
As 2015 draws to a close and the Worldscale Organisation published the new 2016 Flat Rates, Poten and Partners goes through the annual exercise of updating Flat Rates in its systems. This highlighted once again the significant changes in bunker prices that occurred over the last 2 years. The Worldscale Organisation calculates Flat Rates based on average bunker prices over the period from October 1 of the prior year to September 30. The 2015 Flat Rates were based on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) prices of $614.81/metric tonne (MT) while the 2016 Flat Rates use prices of $367.55/MT, a reduction of 40%.
