Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, will have its own private 5G network this year, disclosed the container, bulk cargo, new vehicles and passenger ferry terminal port in the municipality of Bruges.The port’s management will collaborate with Citymesh, which is the only operator to have a license for 5G networks in Flanders and Brussels."The private 5G network in the Port of Zeebrugge will be the accelerator for innovation in and around the port," the port said.The network’s brain is located in the port’s datacenter. This keeps all data safe within the port authority’s own network and makes it independent from external influences.In the first phase, the data network will be used for connectivity with tugboats, air pollution detectors, camera’s and quay sensors.

The Isle of Man Department for Enterprise has announced the appointment of Cameron Mitchell as the next Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry. He will start his post from 1st April 2019.Cameron has a strong history in the shipping industry working with leading operators Maersk, Geest Line and Farstad Shipping for over 10 years as an engineer.Cameron has also held various roles at the Isle of Man Ship Registry, working as a surveyor for 9 years before taking over as Deputy Director in 2018. Cameron has also worked on a number of projects across government with a focus on delivering performance and quality improvement.Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for Enterprise, said: "I am delighted with the appointment of Cameron Mitchell as the new Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry.

A joint industry project on jacking system maintenance and inspection has resulted in a new DNV GL Recommended Practice. This provides guidance to ensure the correct and safe functioning of rack and pinion style jacking systems. Geest North Sea Line, together with its Spanish partner Odiel Bilbao SA, announced more details relating to their new shortsea joint venture, first made public in mid November. The two companies have entered into a vessel sharing agreement with feeder specialist X-Press Container Line to provide twice-weekly sailings between Bilbao, London (Tilbury) and Rotterdam, commencing January 2, 2004. Sailings will be offered from Bilbao every Wednesday and Friday. The mid-week sailing arrives Tilbury on Saturday allowing UK deliveries on Monday while the Friday sailing arrives Monday evening to allow Tuesday deliveries. Departures are every Sunday and Tuesday.

European intermodal operator Geest North Sea Line strengthened its sales team in Germany. Jürgen Reinke has been promoted to the position of General Sales Manager for Germany and will be based in Geest's Duisburg office effective 1 April, 2004, and Frank Possel has been appointed as Regional Account Manager, located in Hamburg. Reinke joined Geest in 2002 as Regional Account Manager for the Ruhr area. His early career was in the Hamburg freight forwarding community followed by sales positions with RoRo ferry and trailer operators PTI Portbridge, Norfolkline and DFDS. Possel has joined Geest from Seawheel. "Central and Southern Germany, especially the Ruhr region, have always been important markets for Geest but we now find that we are increasingly competitive in Northern Germany too.

By the end of this week Geest North Sea Line launches a new container service linking Grangemouth in Scotland with Rotterdam. The service runs twice a week, once direct and once via Teesport. The frequency of the Teesport service will be increased from three times to five times a week. Geest now offers direct sailings on four ports (also on Hull and Tilbury) in England and Scotland.
