ACL Sells Global Materials Services

American Commercial Lines LLC sold its ownership interest in Global Materials Services LLC to Mid-South Terminal Company, L.P. for $14 million cash. This transaction gives Mid-South Terminal Company, L.P., headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, 100% control of Global Materials Services' network of 24 river-served terminals in the United States and 1 in Europe. Richard L. Huber, Chairman of ACL, said “We are pleased that we were able to transfer our interest in this operation to our partner. This transaction allows us to continue our progress toward emerging from Chapter 11 with a focus on our core business. The proceeds from this transaction will be used to pay off the remaining balance of our DIP term loan financing.”

Global Materials Services Acquires Arrow Terminals

Global Materials Services LLC (GMS) has acquired Arrow Terminals, Inc. of Sewickley, Pa., an operator of marine terminals. Arrow operates seven domestic river terminals in Industry, Pa.; Chicago, Ill.; Houston; Decatur, Ala.; Mingo Junction, Ohio; and Follansbee and Brooklyn Junction, W.V., which are engaged in material handling and processing operations for ferroalloy and other bulk products. Arrow also provides on-premise logistics services at steel mills and other plant sites. GMS operates seven other river terminals, five on the Mississippi River and two on the Arkansas River. These terminals provide warehouse and distribution services for steel and bulk shippers, including trucking to customer plant sites.

Techcrane Global Corporation is a Covington, La.-based marine crane manufacturer/distributor who recently installed Techcrane Model F250-100 onboard Torch Offshore L.L.C.'s Midnight Wrangler. This was a crane custom-designed for Torch with a maximum capacity of 125 tons at 30-ft. reach. Time lapse between design conceptions to fabrication in Covington, La., was less than six months. The bid was awarded to Techcrane in December of 2002 for delivery in mid 2003 and is a part of the project to convert the Midnight Wrangler into a deepwater pipelaying vessel. In order to accommodate these deepwater arenas, a winch was specially designed by Lantec on behalf of Techcrane for the F250 to handle 8,000 ft. of two-in. wire rope.

Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, launched the Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM) at the annual Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year Cocktail Reception. Developed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in partnership with the industry, unions and other government agencies, the Sea Transport ITM builds on MPA’s strategic long term plans to develop Singapore’s next-generation port and strengthen our international maritime centre (IMC).

Wilhelmsen Relocates to Singapore

Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) will be relocating its global headquarters from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Singapore within the first quarter of 2018. The relocation decision is part of WSM’s strategic initiatives to be nearer to current clients and also future market. Singapore is an established maritime hub, and a driver of digital innovation that will play a significant part in the company’s ongoing transformation. At the moment, only a few selected key personnel in the management team will be relocated.

Port Saint John Cargo Volume up 15%

Year-over-year total cargo tonnage at Port Saint John, Eastern Canada’s largest port by volume, increased by over 4 million metric tonnes in 2017. Overall cargo tonnage handled for the year 2017 was 30,458,422 metric tonnes, a 15% increase over 2016. All cargo sectors, aside from the anticipated exception of containers, experienced significant gains in 2017. Additionally, the loss experienced in containerized cargo was lessened due the introduction of a new weekly container service by CMA CGM in 2017.

Nexans Acquires BE CableCon

French company Nexans has acquired a controlling interest in Denmark-based BE CableCon, which supplies cable kits to wind turbine companies. The acquisition is part of Nexans’ strategy aimed at reinforcing the Group’s portfolio of activities and accelerating its growth in the renewable energy segment. The acquisition is an illustration of the recently-announced “Paced for Growth” strategy aimed at developing Nexans’ business beyond manufacturing cables to provide customers with complete, fully-integrated cable services.

Wan Hai Lines Unveils China-India Service

Taiwan's global shipping company Wan Hai Lines has announced the launch of China – India Service III “CI3 service” on 23 January 2018. This new service will help to expand Wan Hai Lines network by providing direct service from East China to East India. A press release from the company said that the service will also help to complement Wan Hai Lines existing two other East India services with better port coverage and frequency. This service will be jointly operated with COSCO, IAL, OOCL and X-Press Feeders by using 5 vessels with nominal capacity of 4,250 TEU. Wan Hai Lines will deploy 2 vessels, while COSCO and IAL will operate 1 vessel each, OOCL and X-Press Feeders will operate 1 vessel jointly.

Robot Lasers Prolong Engine Pistons’ Lifespan

New robotized laser cladding technology aims to revolutionize the reconditioning of large bore pistons in two-stroke engines. A new reconditioning process from Wärtsilä Services’ maintenance and repair services business Line QuantiServ minimises welding, causes less thermal shock to the base material and replaces the old chromium layer’s galvanic application. “In addition to its environmental efficiency, the new coating extends the piston head’s lifespan and time between overhauls (TBO), compared to conventional chromium layers.

De Poli Tankers Extends VSAT Deal with Marlink

Dutch ship owner De Poli Tankers BV has extended its contract with Marlink, securing high-bandwidth global communication using the Sealink Plus service for its fleet of eight chemical tankers and two gas tankers. De Poli Tankers' in-house ITC company, Maritime Performances BV, chose to retain the Sealink Plus service for the future as it combines high-bandwidth VSAT with unlimited L-band back-up in a single easy to manage bundle, Marlink said. ABS Strengthens Materials Capabilities

Bourbon, Bureau Veritas Partner on Digitalization

Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities

Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.

Pontchartrain Materials Company finds innovative solution for barge unloading applications. Located in New Orleans, La., Pontchartrain Materials Corporation, LLC provides aggregates to general contractors as well as asphalt and ready-mix companies. In addition to their chief product, limestone, the family-owned company sells recycled concrete and recycled asphalt. Pontchartrain sources the material from quarries in northern states, transferring it down the Mississippi River by barge to one of three company aggregate yards or directly to customers in the New Orleans and surrounding area.

Port of LA Sets New Record with 2017 Container Throughput

CMA CGM said it has tapped Ludovic Renou to lead its U.S. team from its Norfolk, Va. headquarters, effective January 1, 2018. As president of CMA CGM America, Renou has been appointed to lead an organization of more than 900 associates managing annual volumes well over 2 million TEU. CMA CGM America is the U.S. agency for CMA CGM, offering 34 weekly services calling on 15 ports.
