Equinor's Hammerfest LNG plant in Arctic Norway suffered a compressor failure on Thursday and is expected to remain offline until May 19, Norwegian gas system company Gassco said in a regulatory note on Friday. The outage was caused by a technical problem with a heat exchanger that occurred during a restart of the plant following a one-day maintenance outage, an Equinor spokesperson said. The plant will remain offline until repairs have been carried out, the spokesperson added.

The Norwegian LNG plant was shut down due to water ingress in natural gas driers, but is now back in production. Large amounts of natural gas are sent ashore and cooled down at Hammerfest LNG on Melkøya, the world’s most northerly and Europe’s first export facility for LNG from Snøhvit, the first petroleum development in the Barents Sea that has no installations above the sea’s surface. Statoil’s share of production from Snøhvit comprises roughly 50,000 barrels of oil equivalents per day.

Planned Snøhvit Stoppage

The Hammerfest LNG plant at Melkøya in northern Norway will be shut down on Saturday 15 August for up to three months of upgrading and maintenance work. As operator, StatoilHydro is conducting upgrading and modification work at the Hammerfest gas liquefaction plant in order to maintain a high production level in the time ahead. Since start-up in the autumn of 2007, upgrading and replacement of equipment has been carried out to increase the plant's production level. From February this year the plant has produced at approximately full capacity.
