SJSB Launches Caribbean Landing Craft

Florida based shipbuilder St. Johns Ship Building (SJSB) launched a newly built 190-foot landing craft vessel for owner Bahamas Ferries on July 28. Designed for transport in the Bahamian islands, the vessel the Grand Master II is outfitted for Caribbean transport with a forward, hydraulic bow ramp and 6,400 square feet of cargo space. Twin 700 HP Cummings QSK19 with Schottel rudder propellers power the Grand Master II. The vessel will also include a 22 inch electric Westmar bow thruster and two 99 KW John Deer generators.

62 Barges Break Free on Ohio River

More than five dozen barges have reportedly broken free due to ice and high water at two separate locations on the Ohio River. So far 59 of the 62 breakaway barges have been recovered, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, who said it is working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and industry partners in response to the incidents near Pittsburgh, Pa., and Moundsville, W.Va. By Monday, 34 of the reported 35 breakaway barges from fleeting areas at mile maker 94 near Moundsville have been recovered and secured, while 25 of the 27 breakaway barges from Jack’s Run Fleeting area at mile marker 4 near Pittsburgh have been accounted for, and security video has shown seven of the barges went over Emsworth Lock & Dam.

Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger

Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. The build contract includes an option for a second ATB. Once built and deployed, Crowley will operate the ATB under a long-term charter with Alaska-based Petro Star Inc.…

‘House Of Hope’ Comes Together on Ocean Barge

Virginia, a 150- x 60- x 9-ft. ocean going barge will have a unique maiden voyage. The vessel, which is temporarily docked at the New Hampshire Port Authority pier on the icy waters of the Piscataqua River is the location of Jan’s House of Hope, a modular home that will go on tour this summer to raise awareness of cancer. NCAF, a non-profit foundation, is producing Jan’s House of Hope and setting it on a tour of seven cities along the east coast this summer. The goal of the foundation is to raise public awareness of cancer and $10 million for cancer and hospice programs. The project is being completely funded by corporate and individual donations. Hughes Marine Firm of Edison, N.J., was completing work on the barge in dry-dock when they learned of the need for the barge.

Leevac Shipyard's River Explorer

R/B River Explorer, which carries 198 passengers on two interlinked 295-ft. long barges, traverses the Mississippi River and Intracoastal Waterway on fout-to-ten day excursions. With interiors designed by Bauer Interiors, convertability was the prime directive throughout much of the vessel to allow a multitude of uses within a single space. In the lobby area, each etched glass partition between the two-man booths is an engraving of a major bridge spanning the Mississippi River from Ohio to New Orleans. The interior of the Sprague Theater is outfitted to resemble the interior of the vessel by the same name, the largest cargo-carrying towboat on the Mississippi River in the 19th Century.

Dura Poly Delivers Plastic Barge

Dura Poly Boats delivered a 100% plastic Power House 820 workboat to Seaboard Marine Dockbuilders in Oceanside, New York. The vessel is an 8- by 20-foot, 100% plastic hull and wheel house, push knees, crane, nonskid deck, motor guard and custom bumpers with sign routed in them. Dura Poly said the barge is a very low maintenance easily truckable fast vessel. At just over 3,000 pounds, it's top speed is 30 knots. durapolyboats.com

Signal International Lands Hopper Dredge Deal

Signal International, Inc., has landed a $94 million contract from Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, (GLDD) to build an Articulated Tug & Barge ("ATB") Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge. The 15,000-cubic-yard-capacity Dual Trailing Arm Suction Hopper Dredge with a 14,000-horsepower tug is believed to be the world’s first fully integrated ATB Dredge and the largest hopper dredge in the United States. The dredge barge dimensions are 410 ft x 92 ft x 36 ft (124.97m x 15.85 x 10.97m) with the tug measuring 150 ft x 52 ft x 36 ft (45.72m x 15.85 x 10.97m).

U.S. Fab Deliver Unique Maintenance and Mooring Barge

U.S. Fab, a Vigor Industrial company, has delivered the purpose-built vessel to Washington’s King County for the use of its passenger ferry fleet. The 140’x40’x7’6” barge features moorage for up to four vessels and two steel structures, one that houses a well-equipped maintenance workshop and the other a two-story office and crew quarters. “This was an interesting project that required teams to integrate two different building classification standards while maintaining optimal cost efficiencies,” explained Bryan Nichols, Sales and Marketing Manager for Vigor Industrial.

SENESCO Signs Contract, Launches Barge for Cancer Awareness Program

Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) of North Kingstown, R.I., signed a major contract with Barges Unlimited, a subsidiary of Seaboats, Inc., of Fall River, Mass., to build an 80,000-bbl, 320-ft. double hull barge. The contract value is in excess of $6.5 million. With this contract signing, SENESCO will manufacture the largest double-hull barge ever constructed in the northeastern U.S. Work on the project is expected to take up to one year to complete. When finished, the barge will be used by Seaboats for the transportation and delivery of light oil products. SENESCO currently employs 110 people. However, with the addition of this contract and other business, the shipyard expects to add 40 to 50 new skilled workers to the staff.

Ocean Deck Barge Sold

Marcon International, Inc. announced the sale of the 5,000tdw ocean deck barge Mitkof Provider from Alaska Marine Lines of Seattle, Wash., to Island Tug and Barge Co., also of Seattle. The 280’ x 60’ x 17’ barge was originally built in 1969 by Todd Shipyard, Seattle, Wash. as the “Vanliner 280” and after converted and named “Foss 280” served first as the foundation of a 221 man camp for Prudhoe Bay operations in the Arctic and later housed personnel involved in the Exxon Oil Spill Cleanup.. She was sold by Foss in the early – mid’90’s to Alaska Marine Lines who eventually removed the modular housing units and installed a new 7’ high fence and concrete deck with steel “T” beams every 42” allowing the barge to trade as a conventional flat deck barge. ACL Selected to Serve on the IWUB

American Commercial Lines (ACL) has been selected to serve as a representative on the Inland Waterways Users Board (IWUB), an advisory board established to monitor the Inland Waterways Trust Fund (Fund) and make recommendations to the Army Corps of Engineers and to Congress on investment priorities using resources from the Fund. Comprised of representatives of the barge transportation industry and the customers it serves, the IWUB provides input to help identify and prioritize investment in inland navigation infrastructure.

ExxonMobil, Imperial Oil Employ DH Barge in Vancouver

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels (EMMF) and Imperial Oil have commissioned a new double-hull barge to complement existing marine fuels services at Canada's port of Vancouver. The state-of-the art ITB Provider, owned by established Vancouver operator Island Tug & Barge, has a fuel capacity of 2,200 tonnes, and can deliver HFO/IFO and MGO simultaneously at a rate of up to 500 tonnes per hour. It will complement the ITB2, which is already refuelling vessels at Vancouver, and the Imperial Oil barge Imperial Nootka, which is supplying marine lubricants and smaller MGO deliveries. Imperial Oil is the only supplier in the Port of Vancouver with bunker storage facilities. network.

Donjon to Build Hopper Barges for Sterling

Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, was recently awarded a contract by Sterling Equipment of Quincy, Massachusetts to construct two hopper barges, with an option for a third. The principal dimensions of these barges are 225’ long x 42’ wide x 12’ deep. Delivery of the barges is to be made by the middle to end of August 2013. Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair's facility, equipped with 1,250 ft. by 120 ft. by 22 ft. dry dock, is one of the largest shipyards of its kind on the Great Lakes. The facility includes 4,000 ft. of pier space and more than 200,000 square ft.

Bender Granted Conversion Contract From Cal Dive

Bender Shipbuilding & Repair of Mobile, Ala., has been awarded the conversion of the 400 x 102 ft. (121.9 x 31 m) Sea Sorceress. The barge, which will be converted from a manned fuel barge to a DP-II construction barge for Cal Dive International of Houston, Texas, will receive eight 850 kW retractable Z drives. These drives will be powered by four Wärtsilä generators providing 6.6kV of power. A new engine room on the dynamically positioned barge will be used for the vessel's main source of power, as well as ancillary equipment. A 31 x 102 ft. (9.4 x 31 m) stern piece will be removed and replaced by a new stern housing for four of the thrusters - the other four will be positioned forward in the bow.

U.S. Barge Delivers for Harley Marine

U.S. Barge delivered another petroleum barge to Harley Marine Services. The Barge Anne Elizabeth was christened on October 4, 2010 by her namesake, Anne Elizabeth Hall. Barge Anne Elizabeth measures 241’ x 64’ 6”, with a depth of 23’ 6”. The barge has a carrying capacity of 31,500 barrels. The double-hulled barge is OPA 90-compliant, with vapor collection piping. The barge has two isolated cargo systems. The main cargo is intended to be fuel oil, and the auxiliary system will handle marine gas oil (MGO). “Working closely with Harley Marine’s technical and operations group, U.S. Barge continues to construct and outfit high quality vessels that meet our expectations. We are very happy with the production and craftsmanship of U.S.

AWO Hails DHS Subchapter M Approval

Regulations Now in Final Stage of Administration Review. The American Waterways Operators, the national trade association for the tugboat, towboat and barge industry, hailed the Department of Homeland Security’s approval of the U.S. Coast Guard’s rule to establish an inspection regime for towing vessels at 46 CFR Subchapter M. The Subchapter M rule is now under review at the White House Office of Management and Budget, which is the final stage in the Administration review process and typically takes about 90 days.

U.S. Barge Delivers for Harley Marine

U.S. Barge recently delivered another high capacity petroleum barge to Harley Marine Services. Barge Sixty-Five Roses is a unique design from Elliott Bay Design Group. With new efficiency and voluntary environmental features incorporated into the design, the barge continues Harley’s pattern of continuous improvement. Barge Sixty-Five Roses is a 422 x 76-ft. tank barge with capacity of 83,600 barrels. Outfitting requirements include two vertical turbine cargo pump systems, a cargo heating system, a vapor recovery system, two hose cranes, and five hydraulic mooring winches. There are provisions for the future addition of a self-contained vapor processing unit. All outfitting was completed in house by U.S. Barge. U.S. Barge’s facility is ideally arranged for construction of very large barges.

New Tug to be Permanently Paired with Self-Unloading Barge

The Interlake Steamship Company and Interlake Transportation have received 7,200 hp Z-drive tug Dorothy Ann. Designed by Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, the 124.5 ft. long Dorothy Ann was constructed in 1998 by Bay Shipbuilding Company. Final outfitting was performed by Bark River Towing, Weld All and Marine Accommodations. Dorothy Ann is the largest Z-drive tug built to date in North America. Twin Ulstein Z-drives enable the vessel to turn on her own axis, stop within her own length and move easily in any direction. Coupled with self-unloading barge Pathfinder, the pair is the most maneuverable unit on the Great Lakes, says the company. Alone, Dorothy Ann can travel at 16 mph; when pushing the loaded barge, open lake speed is 11.5 mph.

Cascade to Build 120MW Power Barge

Cascade General was awarded the contract for construction of a 120MW power barge for MAN B&W Diesel AG of Augsberg, Germany. The floating diesel power station will be built for operation in Guatemala, and is a self-contained mobile power generation unit comprised of seven MAN B&W type 18V 48/60 diesel generators mounted on a deck barge which measures 279 x 204 x 11.8 ft. "This is a large - and in many ways significant - project, which shows Cascade General's ability to compete in the international market for newbuilds," said Cascade executive vice-president Suren Menon. The seven generating sets will be housed in an engine hall, which will be prefabricated at Cascade General. A steel deckhouse structure will accommodate control room, offices, workshops, supplies and electrical facilities.

Waller Marine Delivers Caissons to Venezuela

Waller Marine, Inc recently delivered two large steel caissons to clients in Venezuela to be used for closure of a basin that is under construction at the Tacoa floating power generation facility. The caissons, each having dimensions of 115-ft in length, 16-ft in width and standing 26 ft high will be installed at the entrance of the basin that will house the two 170 MW power barges constructed by Waller and now undergoing pre-commissioning activities at the site. The caissons will protect the power barges from wave and tidal action from the sea.
