SENESCO Signs Contract, Launches Barge for Cancer Awareness Program

Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) of North Kingstown, R.I., signed a major contract with Barges Unlimited, a subsidiary of Seaboats, Inc., of Fall River, Mass., to build an 80,000-bbl, 320-ft. double hull barge. The contract value is in excess of $6.5 million. With this contract signing, SENESCO will manufacture the largest double-hull barge ever constructed in the northeastern U.S. Work on the project is expected to take up to one year to complete. When finished, the barge will be used by Seaboats for the transportation and delivery of light oil products. SENESCO currently employs 110 people. However, with the addition of this contract and other business, the shipyard expects to add 40 to 50 new skilled workers to the staff.

NY & NJ Holds Waterfront Conference

On May 15, the Municipal Waterfront Alliance sponsored its second port-wide waterfront conference focused on the legal, environmental, infrastructure, redevelopment, commercial, transportation and economic issues facing the Port of New York & New Jersey. The conference took place in the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey and the World Financial Center in New York City -- a short water taxi ride for the participants. The conference was attended by approximately 500 people, including 60 federal, state and local government representatives and stakeholders in the future redevelopment of the port complex. Ferries to be Sold at Unreserved International Auction

Three PacifiCat-class fast ferries capable of carrying 1,000 passengers and 250 vehicles at speeds of up to 34 knots will be sold at an international, unreserved public auction March 24 at Canada Place, Vancouver, by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. The 400-ft. (122-m) aluminum vessels, PacifiCat Explorer, PacifiCat Discovery and PacifiCat Voyager, are among the largest catamaran fast ferries in the world, and were designed by Phil Hercus of Incat Designs, Sydney, Australia, and built in British Columbia, Canada, in March 1999, September 1999 and July 2000 respectively. Current owner BC Ferries has determined that the vessels, which have seen very little service, are not suited to the high level of commercial trucks and buses on its ferry routes.

Greenbrier Announces New Marine Orders

The Greenbrier Companies announced today that its Gunderson Marine division in Portland, Oregon has received an order from Sause Bros. for a 100,000 barrel double-hull oceangoing oil barge. The order is the fourth in a series of barges currently on order from Sause Bros., also headquartered in Oregon. Coupled with other recent orders from Alaska Marine Lines, a Lynden company, Greenbrier's marine backlog is now valued at over $30 million, and extends into mid-2004. Gunderson, through its marine and railcar divisions, currently has over 1,100 employees, 15% of which are dedicated to marine. Gunderson is actively seeking 60 new employees due to an upturn in both the marine and railcar marketplace. The Sause Bros.

A&P Group & McCall Bros. Form Alliance

McCall Bros. Propellers Ltd., and A&P Group agreed to form a non-exclusive marketing alliance to promote their respective capabilities and resources. Commenting on the alliance, Hugh McCall, chairman and managing director of McCall Bros. Propellers said "We welcome the alliance which will enable us to enhance our service to our customers." Clive Towl, Group Business Development Director of A&P Group also commented "This alliance is further evidence of our desire to forge close ties with both our customers and technically competent suppliers."

Indo-China Ship Management Purchases Kelvin Hughes Radars

The Indo-China Ship Management Company Ltd. has purchased Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 radars for the retrofit of two ships. The Indo-China Ship Management Company is overseeing the retrofit of a product tanker in Dalian, China with a Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 6000 radar. The company has also retrofitted a cargo vessel in Cammell Laird Shipyard in Gibraltar with Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 5000 radar. Both ships were retrofitted with the Kelvin Hughes radars in dry dock. Launched in 2001, Kelvin Hughes’s Nucleus3 uses the latest in radar technology and offers a wide range of sophisticated and flexible operating modes. Features in clued automatic tracking of up to 50 targets at any one time and the Kelvin Hughes patented tracker ball and push button control.

Auctioneers. The 400-ft. (122-m) aluminum vessels, PacifiCat Explorer, PacifiCat Discovery and PacifiCat Voyager, are among the largest catamaran fast ferries in the world. Engineered to the highest technical and performance standards, they were designed by Phil Hercus of Incat Designs, Sydney, Australia, and built in British Columbia, Canada, in March 1999, September 1999 and July 2000 respectively.

Kelvin Hughes Opens Second US Office

Kelvin Hughes Ltd, navigation solutions provider, has opened a Kelvin Hughes USA LLC Washington office, in Alexandria, Virginia. The primary role of the new office is to expand on the existing Kelvin Hughes business and presence in the US, providing a greater level of local sales and support for US-based customers. The company already has a service centre in New Orleans. Kelvin Hughes has three offices in the UK, where it has its headquarters, as well as regional offices in The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Singapore and China. In addition to the SharpEye radar, Kelvin Hughes produces a range of navigation equipment, data services and paper navigation products for the commercial, military and leisure sectors.

ECI Acquires Kelvin Hughes

ECI Partners LLP (“ECI”), the UK mid-market buyout specialist, has acquired Kelvin Hughes in a $109.3m transaction out of Smiths Group plc, the UK listed technology company. Kelvin Hughes is a leading supplier of navigation products and services for the Naval and Commercial marine sectors. The purchase price comprises $100.9m which was paid in cash on completion of the purchase and a deferred payment of up to $8.4m depending on certain conditions being satisfied. Senior members of Kelvin Hughes management invested alongside ECI, becoming shareholders in the business. Kelvin Hughes has a highly innovative product range, which is designed to provide mariners with the most advanced navigation systems and services available.

Halliburton Seeks to Replace Baker Hughes Board

Baker Hughes Incorporated today announced receipt of notice from Halliburton Company that it intends to nominate candidates to replace the entire board of directors of Baker Hughes at its Apr. 2015 annual meeting. The nominations followed discussions between the parties regarding a potential business combination transaction, and Halliburton's refusal to improve its first and only value proposal. Baker Hughes considers the notice to be an attempt by Halliburton to pressure the Baker Hughes board into accepting a transaction with Halliburton on Halliburton's terms. The discussions began after Baker Hughes received an unsolicited proposal from Halliburton without prior notice on Oct.

Kelvin Hughes Announce Saab AIS Deal

Kelvin Hughes is now able to supply both Automatic Information Systems (AIS) and Voyage Data Recorders (VDR), as part of its fully compliant integrated bridge systems (IBS). Saab Transponder Tech, following an original equipment manufacture (OEM) agreement between Saab and Kelvin Hughes, will supply the AIS. AIS systems are being made compulsory as part of the changes to SOLAS V, which go into effect in July 2002. The systems are designed to work in tandem with a ship’s radar system to improve the identification and location of other vessels. Kelvin Hughes had several criteria that were important when selecting a third party AIS supplier including early type approval and hardware availability.

Auctioneers. The aluminum vessels, PacifiCat Explorer, PacifiCat Discovery and PacifiCat Voyager, are among the largest catamaran fast ferries in the world, designed by Phil Hercus of Incat Designs, Sydney, Australia, and built in British Columbia, Canada. The PacifiCat fast ferries can be remotely monitored in real time for position, speed, trim, jet angles and rpm; a 287 kW bowthruster improves maneuverability at low speeds; and an integrated bridge system allows enhanced safety monitoring, control and crew deployment.

Ritchie Bros. Auctions Off PacifiCat Trio

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers have concluded the results of the sale of the PacifiCat catamaran fast ferries. The three vessels, which sold for a total of $13 million within 10 minutes, also involved ancillary equipment auctioned off for $650,000 – for total auction proceeds of $13.6 million. The ferry trio was purchased by one buyer, who has decided to remain anonymous, while the ancillary equipment was bought by a group of nine different buyers. According to David Ritchie, chairman and CEO of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers the vessels were not a hard sell. “Without exception, the potential bidders who inspected the vessels were impressed with the excellent state in which the vessels has been maintained,” he said. Latest Offshore Rig Count

Baker Hughes Incorporated announce the international offshore rig count for January 2013 was 307, up 8 from the 299 counted in December 2012. The count is unchanged from the 307 counted in January 2012. The average U.S. offshore rig count for January 2013 was 53, up two from the 51 that were counted in December 2012 and up 10 from the 43 counted in December 2012. The Baker Hughes Rotary Rig Counts are counts of the number of drilling rigs actively exploring for or developing oil or natural gas in the United States, Canada and international markets. Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944, when Hughes Tool Company began weekly counts of US and Canadian drilling activity.

OSI and Kelvin Hughes Collaborate

Offshore Systems International Ltd. (OSI) announced that its systems division, Offshore Systems Ltd. (OSL), has entered into an agreement with Kelvin Hughes Limited, part of Smith Marine Systems, to jointly pursue opportunities to supply electronic navigation systems to military customers. Qinetiq Type Approves Kelvin Hughes VDR

Kelvin Hughes has been awarded type approval for its NDR 2002 Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). The type approval includes two different crash survival modules (CSM), and has been awarded by QINETIQ formerly DERA. The type approval is unique as Kelvin Hughes is the only company offering two crash survival modules with type approval in its VDR. One is manufactured by L#, the other by Smiths Aerospace of which Kelvin Hughes is the marine systems business. Offering two crash survival modules allows Kelvin Hughes greater flexibility and guarantees product availability.

GMPCS Places Order for Broadband Terminals

GMPCS Personal Communications placed an initial order with Hughes Network Systems for 1,000 HNS 9201 broadband satellite IP terminals for use with Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) mobile satellite service. The deal with Hughes makes GMPCS the first satellite communications service provider to place an order for the terminals that will usher in the new global broadband service anticipated to begin in late 2005. The capabilities of BGAN will include the delivery of Internet and intranet content and solutions, LAN and WAN connectivity, video on demand, videoconferencing, fax, e-mail, phone and local area network access at speeds of up to 492 kbps.

Halliburton & Baker Hughes Merger

Two giants merge

Halliburton Company and Baker Hughes Incorporated  today announced a definitive agreement under which Halliburton will acquire all the outstanding shares of Baker Hughes in a stock and cash transaction. The transaction is valued at $78.62 per Baker Hughes share, representing an equity value of $34.6 billion and enterprise value of $38.0 billion, based on Halliburton’s closing price on November 12, 2014, the day prior to public confirmation by Baker Hughes that it was in talks with Halliburton regarding a transaction.

Gould Named Managing Director of Kelvin Hughes

Russell Gould has been appointed managing director of Kelvin Hughes Ltd, part of the Specialty Engineering Division of Smiths Group plc. Russell joined Kelvin Hughes in 1985 as a graduate engineer responsible for the development of new navigation products. In 1995 he became head of radar techniques and was appointed engineering and operations director in 2001. For the past 5 years he has been the Company's commercial business director.
