Cavotec, ABB Partner on Shore-to-ship Power
Cavotec and ABB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly offer complete shore-to-ship power solutions globally. Such solutions allow vessels to plug into onshore power supply and shut down their engines, eliminating noxious emissions, noise and vibrations while berthed in ports that are often located in city surrounds. The technology ensures a seamless switch from on-board generation to shore power supply, without disruption of services including lighting, heating and refrigeration.
UK Submarines to Get Northrop Grumman PMS
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected to supply the Platform Management System (PMS) for the Royal Navy's fifth Astute-class submarine, Anson. Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit will supply the PMS for Astute Boat 5 under a performance partnering arrangement (PPA) with BAE Systems Maritime-Submarine. BAE Systems will install the PMS equipment, which controls and monitors the submarine's platform machinery and onboard systems, at its shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, U.K. The contract also includes software, safety case, equipment and obsolescence management. The Astute-class is the Royal Navy's latest series of nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarines. Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit previously supplied the PMS for Astute Boat 4, Audacious.
Iridium, KVH Team on Broadband Solution
Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) and KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI) have agreed to offer what the pair is touting as the first-ever, fully global, seamless broadband satellite communications service for the maritime market. Under the agreement, KVH will offer an integrated service package that combines its mini-VSAT BroadbandSM service and the Iridium OpenPort broadband service. “We are enthusiastic that KVH is our first distribution partner to launch Iridium’s new VSAT companion service offering,” said Greg Ewert, executive vice president, global distribution channels, Iridium. “We have optimized the Iridium OpenPort system to seamlessly integrate with a vessel’s VSAT platform.
ULSTEIN Establishes New Subsidiary
ULSTEIN has recently established a new company, Ulstein IDEA Equipment Solutions. This company will take over the activities of former IDEA Heavy Equipment b.v, a Dutch company that ULSTEIN has cooperated with in recent years. Ulstein IDEA Equipment Solutions will be engaged in the development and manufacturing of mission and interface equipment on board vessels, mainly working in the offshore and dredging markets. ULSTEIN holds a majority interest in the new company and COO Tore Ulstein in Design & Solutions says that this establishment is part of ULSTEIN’s long-term strategy.
