Arkansas Maritime Center gets Federal Grant
The Maritime Transportation Research and Education Center, based at the University of Arkansas, has received a federal grant of $923,700, reports AP. The center, known as MarTREC, is a consortium of researchers focused on maritime and multimodal transportation research. It has received $3.7 million since 2013. The latest grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will support research and programs through September 2018. Port of Los angeles Executive Director Receivs Peter Benchley ‘Excellence in Solutions' Ocean Conservation Award. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., has been named the 2012 recipient of the Blue Frontier Campaign’s Peter Benchley Ocean Award for “Excellence in Solutions.” The Blue Frontier Campaign is a national marine conservation activist organization working to improve ocean policies in coastal states. The Peter Benchley Award is named in honor of lifetime marine wildlife conservationist Peter Benchley, best known for writing the bestseller novel ‘Jaws’ in 1974.

Large Dead Zone Found in Gulf of Mexico
Mapped size confirms NOAA forecast for an average-sized hypoxia zone this year. NOAA- and EPA-supported scientists have mapped the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, an area with low oxygen water, measuring 5,052 square miles this summer--approximately the size of the state of Connecticut. The measurements were taken during the 30th annual hypoxia survey cruise from July 27 to August 2. UT Research Vessel Up for Sale
According to the Daily Texan, after 35 years of service, the research vessel, Longhorn, is being sold by UT's Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas. The Newspaper reported that Steven Lanoux, assistant director of operations at the institute, said the Longhorn is not worth the $1.5m renovation cost it would take to repair the vessel. The ship requires hull repairs, new engines and new scientific equipment, he said. Private research crews and other universities such as the A&M Research Institute, Tulane University and Duke University pay to use the ship, but their fees will not cover the expensive repairs, he said. Naval Engineering Education Center Kick Off
Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) celebrated the kick off of the Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC), launching a three-day conference at the University of Michigan, July 26-28. NEEC is a new partnership between NAVSEA and a consortium of 15 top colleges and universities as well as 2 engineering professional societies focused on developing the Navy's future science, engineering and acquisition workforce. “Sailors depend upon you to give them a ship with a technological edge. The NEEC will provide the best minds and training to give the Sailors the technological edge they rely on," said Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the keynote speaker at the Kick-Off event.
Marine Partnership to Receive $17 Million
A five-year, $17.7 million grant to study physical and ecological processes in a poorly understood segment of the ocean off the coast of California and Oregon, will allow researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and three other universities to conduct this major joint research effort. It is the largest single grant ever made by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Called the "Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies on Coastal Oceans: A Long-Term Ecological Consortium," or "PISCO," the group is already beginning studies of a 1,200-mile long zone of near-shore that, until now, has been largely ignored by both oceanographers and marine ecologists.
Bollinger Announces Consortium for Future Building Opportunities
Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. announced at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans that an agreement was reached to form an international consortium to respond to a Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition program for the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). Flinders University and four of France’s leading Graduate Schools of Engineering have entered into an academic and research cooperation agreement relating to Australia’s Future Submarine Program. The agreement between Flinders and a consortium comprised of ENSTA ParisTech, École Centrale de Nantes, CentraleSupélec and École Polytechnique will be signed at a ceremony to be witnessed by South Australia’s Minister for Higher Education and Skills, the Hon Susan Close and the Deputy Chief Executive of DCNS and General Manager of Australia’s Future Submarine Program, Marie-Pierre de Bailliencourt.
APM Terminals Poti to Build Cargo Terminal
APM Terminals Poti and Poti New Terminals Consortium signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a USD 100 million dollar investment in a new bulk cargo terminal that can process 1.5 million tons of dry bulk cargo annually and generate new trade opportunities for customers in the Georgian transit corridor. The new terminal is expected to be built on APM Terminals Poti land and infrastructure and will entail the construction, development and operation of a new breakwater, dry bulk cargo terminal and related infrastructure to serve bulk cargo customers.
New CEO Arrives at LITE
Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise’s (LITE) newly appointed chief executive officer (CEO), Dr. Kam Ng, has officially arrived and is active in his new position. Ng was selected in April of this year and is joining the LITE team after retiring from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) as the deputy director for research. “I am very excited to bring my expertise in immersive and digital media technologies to Lafayette to help the University and local businesses, large and small,” stated Ng. Ng is relieving Dr. Robert Twilley who has served as the interim CEO for LITE since November 2010.

Petrobras: Fire Contained on Platform in Lula Field
Brazil's state-controlled oil company Petróleo Brasileiro said on Tuesday a fire at a platform in the Santos Basin was contained and did not cause injuries or environmental damage. Production there remains halted until safety tests can be completed, the company said. The fire was discovered early on Tuesday on a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit in the Lula Field. RBR Joins Smart Ocean Sensor Consortium
RBR has joined the Smart Ocean Sensor Consortium (SOSC) as a founding member. The SOSC is a group of key manufacturers and users of Oceanographic instruments dedicated to improving the reliability, utility and cost-effectiveness of hydrographic sensor networks through the adoption, development, and promotion of appropriate standard interfaces and protocols. Manufacturing members will supply a universal unique identifier (UUID) with each compliant instrument, and will comply with a group-defined interface to retrieve the UUID from the device's serial port. Autonomous Systems Competition Enters Final Phase
The final phase of a competition to develop novel adaptive autonomous ocean sampling network (AAOSN) management systems for the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is now underway. Long-term Study May Reveal Deepwater Horizon Impacts
The Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will receive approximately $1.25 million over the next three years to work with Mexican colleagues in the southern Gulf of Mexico to look for residual impacts from the Ixtoc I oil spill of 1979-1980 on coastal areas, fisheries, and the deep sea.
