This week at Singapore Maritime Week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is advancing ambitious decarbonization targets for the maritime transportation sector, both domestically and internationally.DOE is teaming with over 15 government and industry partners in Singapore to foster partnerships and collaborate on clean energy solutions aimed at achieving net zero-emissions in the maritime sector by 2050. The 2022 Maritime Risk Symposium (MRS) is scheduled to be held Nov. 15-17, 2022, hosted by Argonne National Laboratory at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois. MRS is an annual international event focused on risks involving the global maritime transportation system (MTS). For the MRS, the U.S. Coast Guard partners with the sponsor, the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and the hosting agency. MRS began in 2011 and has grown in size, scope and interest. The MRS event will be followed by the U.S.

In a joint plea to Congressional leadership and Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin this week a host of maritime transportation entities asked that $3.5 billion in COVID-19 relief funding be made available for the U.S. maritime transportation sector, citing “significant hardships” and “unique and unexpected challenges” posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.The letters ask Congress and the Administration to take immediate action to provide the whole of the maritime transportation system…

HudsonAnalytix, announced that Admiral Thad Allen, U.S. Coast Guard retired, has joined their operation as a Senior Executive Advisor.Admiral Allen served as the 23rd Commandant of the Coast Guard from 2006 to 2010. He will be focusing on risk management for the global maritime transportation sector served by Hudson. Focus areas include regulatory and policy issues, crisis response and disaster management, environmental compliance, and cyber risk to shipping, ports, and supply chains.

Marittima Emiliana, a company owned by the Amoretti family’s Armatori Group, has placed an order for the 4,500 dwt  tanker duo at Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding, a Chinese shipyard specialising in small chemical construction.Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) advised Crédit Agricole Italia on two financings for Marittima Emiliana for the construction of the two chemical tankers.Construction will start in 1H 2019m, with delivery is scheduled for 2020. This transaction represents the Amoretti family’s first newbuild order in nearly ten years.The Armatori Group is a leading company in the international maritime transportation sector, most notably for liquid petroleum and chemical cargoes. They currently operate a fleet of 11 tankers with capacities ranging from 2,700 dwt to 30,000 dwt.

The state-run Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) said it will offer support to 10 small and medium shipping lines as part of its effort to revive the country's maritime transportation sector.According to a report in Yonhap, KOBC selected the shipping lines as its primary negotiation partner with so-called sale and lease back (S&LB) assistance to be provided. KOBC aims to provide different services to rebuild shipping industry, including management of trade, support for replacement with eco-friendly ships and financial work for shipping terminals.KOBC which formed under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on July 4 said that S&LB refers to the buying of a ship from a shipping line and then leasing the ships back to the owner.

The United States of America government has issued a 90-day ultimatum to Nigeria to improve security in its ports and waterways or face a ban on ships from entering the country.
