U.S. Department of Energy Advances Zero-Emissions Targets

This week at Singapore Maritime Week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is advancing ambitious decarbonization targets for the maritime transportation sector, both domestically and internationally.DOE is teaming with over 15 government and industry partners in Singapore to foster partnerships and collaborate on clean energy solutions aimed at achieving net zero-emissions in the maritime sector by 2050. Domestically, DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is joining with ABS to create opportunities for data and information sharing to strengthen U.S. shipping. The U.S.

Maritime Risk Symposium 2022: The Importance of Inland Systems to the MTS

The 2022 Maritime Risk Symposium (MRS) is scheduled to be held Nov. 15-17, 2022, hosted by Argonne National Laboratory at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois. MRS is an annual international event focused on risks involving the global maritime transportation system (MTS). For the MRS, the U.S. Coast Guard partners with the sponsor, the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and the hosting agency. MRS began in 2011 and has grown in size, scope and interest. The MRS event will be followed by the U.S.

US Maritime Industry Seeks $3.5 Billion in COVID-19 Relief

In a joint plea to Congressional leadership and Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin this week a host of maritime transportation entities asked that $3.5 billion in COVID-19 relief funding be made available for the U.S. maritime transportation sector, citing “significant hardships” and “unique and unexpected challenges” posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.The letters ask Congress and the Administration to take immediate action to provide the whole of the maritime transportation system…

IMO Urges Governments to Allow Crew Changes

Marittima Emiliana Orders Two Tankers

Marittima Emiliana, a company owned by the Amoretti family’s Armatori Group, has placed an order for the 4,500 dwt  tanker duo at Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding, a Chinese shipyard specialising in small chemical construction.Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) advised Crédit Agricole Italia on two financings for Marittima Emiliana for the construction of the two chemical tankers.Construction will start in 1H 2019m, with delivery is scheduled for 2020. This transaction represents the Amoretti family’s first newbuild order in nearly ten years.The Armatori Group is a leading company in the international maritime transportation sector, most notably for liquid petroleum and chemical cargoes. They currently operate a fleet of 11 tankers with capacities ranging from 2,700 dwt to 30,000 dwt.

IMO Workshop on Secure Shipping in Asia

Shipping forms the backbone of world trade, transporting around 80% of global trade by volume. No other method of mass transportation is as cost-effective or fuel-efficient.Each day, around 50,000 merchant ships deliver the things people need and want – from food, to clothes, fuel, raw materials, electronics, medication and more. The security of maritime trade is therefore paramount to people all over the world.One way in which International Maritime Organization (IMO) supports maritime security is through targeted workshops supporting countries to implement IMO measures. The latest of these events, on maritime and port security for Asian countries, took place in Ningbo, China (23-27 July).

Korea Ocean Business Corporation to Support 10 Shipping Companies

The state-run Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) said it will offer support to 10 small and medium shipping lines as part of its effort to revive the country's maritime transportation sector.According to a report in Yonhap, KOBC selected the shipping lines as its primary negotiation partner with so-called sale and lease back (S&LB) assistance to be provided. KOBC aims to provide different services to rebuild shipping industry, including management of trade, support for replacement with eco-friendly ships and financial work for shipping terminals.KOBC which formed under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on July 4 said that S&LB refers to the buying of a ship from a shipping line and then leasing the ships back to the owner.

U.S. Thumps the Table on Nigerian Ship Security

The United States of America government has issued a 90-day ultimatum to Nigeria to improve security in its ports and waterways or face a ban on ships from entering the country. At the opening of a two day General Stakeholders Conference on "Reviving ISPS Code Implementation in Nigeria, Mr. Olugbenga Leke Oyewole, Senior Special Assistant  to the President on Maritime Services, told the Lagos conference that due to measures that were introduced after the September 2011 incident in United States, Nigeria cannot be exonerated  from the activities of terrorists, reports 'WorldStage'. He assured that the country will revive its implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security code by August to secure ports and waterways against terrorism, piracy, smuggling and bunkering.

CG Amendments Subject of Hearing

Legislation to amend and improve laws relating to the U.S. Coast Guard and maritime transportation will be the subject of a Congressional hearing on Thursday. The legislation, the Coast Guard Amendments of 2005, has not yet been introduced in the U.S. House. The hearing by the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, chaired by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 12th in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building. Mr. Calvin M. Lederer, Deputy Judge Advocate General of the United States Coast Guard, will testify at Thursday’s hearing.
