Norway has been forced to close the Sture Oil Terminal near Bergen and has started closing down the nearby Kollsness gas-and-condensate terminal — a lifeline of heating gas to Europe — after an early morning collision between a $440-million frigate and an oil tanker.The frigate Helge Ingstad, now listing heavily to its port side, is loaded with torpedoes and weapons systems said to be unstable as a result of the collision. Norwegian broadcaster NRK today reported that Aker Solutions' fabrication yard in Egersund, Norway, will be letting 1,500 temporary workers go after the new year. While it is common practice at the yard to adjust the temporary workforce to existing activity levels, no decision has been made to do so. The yard currently employs about 2,200 workers, both temporary and permanent, for work on 14 projects. Activity levels are nearly record high as several projects are at an intensive stage of work. The workload is expected to come down next year and the need for contractors will be reduced as projects are completed. This is in line with the yard's plans.

Norway called a meeting of a crisis team for radioactive accidents on Monday, August 14, after technical faults forced a Russian nuclear submarine to run aground on the sea bed off northern Russia. "The crisis commission for atomic accidents has been alerted to the situation, and will meet this afternoon to go over the available information," the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority said. The authority would try to compile all information on the accident, from Russia, other Nordic countries and the Norwegian armed forces, before the meeting of officials in the commission to decide whether any action was needed. Norway has long feared radioactive pollution from its eastern neighbor.

Aker Maritime is reportedly set to sell its subsea operations for $620.7 million to France's Coflexip, Reuters reported Norway's NRK public radio as saying. It said Aker's board had unanimously approved the sale. The sale would cover Aker's most profitable businesses and exclude its Norwegian construction yards Aker Stord and Aker Verdal. But Aker Maritime, which offers services ranging from seismic surveys to decommissioning of ageing oil and gas installations, said the report was speculative. "We don't comment on this type of media speculation," Aker Maritime spokesman Torbjoern Andersen said. In Paris, Coflexip also declined comment. Coflexip shares were trading 2.5 percent weaker in Paris at 144.5 euros.
