Tug Malta’s New Tug Named

St. On Friday, February 9, Tug Malta’s Damen ASD 2913 was named St. Angelo at a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, and the island nation’s Minister of Transport, Ian Borg. Acting as sponsor of the vessel was Mrs. Michelle Muscat, the wife of the Prime Minister. Tug Malta is part of the Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group. The ceremony was also attended by Tug Malta Chairman John E. Sullivan and CEO Mario Mizzi, Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group Chiefs Giovanni Delle Piane and Gregorio Gavarone and Damen Sales Manager Antonio Marte.

Rober Allan, Sanmar Launch New Tug Design

Robert Allan Ltd. The new VectRA 3000 Class Tug is a high performance VSP Tractor tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd in close collaboration with Turkish ship builder Sanmar and Voith Turbo Propulsion. The tug is designed for maximum efficiency in the performance of towing, harbor ship-handling and escorting of large ships. Performance has been verified with extensive model tests at the commencement of the design cycle. The unique propulsion arrangement features high speed diesel engines connected to the Voith units via reduction gearboxes with integral clutches.

Fourth Vessel Joins Topaz Energy ERRV Fleet

Topaz Energy and Marine, a leading offshore support vessel company, has bolstered its Emergency Response and Recovery Vessel (ERRV) fleet with the addition of a new vessel, Topaz Responder. The newly-built, state-of-the-art Topaz Responder will primarily provide safety support to offshore installations but is versatile enough to also provide general offshore support services. Constructed to the highest standards, the vessel was built in the ship building yard by Topaz Energy and Marine’s sister company, Topaz Engineering, in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. Topaz Energy and Marine’s Board of Directors, led by Chairman Samir J. Fancy and Chief Executive Officer René Kofod-Olsen, recently attended the naming ceremony to mark the official launch of Topaz Responder.

Swire Pacific Offshore Acquires 2 Newbuildings

Shipowner and operator, Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Ltd (SPO) celebrated the naming of two new vessels, Pacific Centurion, an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel, and Pacific Goldfinch, a Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) at the dual vessel naming ceremony held on Tuesday, 24 March 2015 at Loyang Offshore Supply Base. The naming ceremony was graced by Lady Sponsor, Mrs Joy Slosar, wife of Mr John Slosar, Chairman of Swire Pacific Limited and SPO and attended by SPO Board Members, employees and key project partners. “The addition of Pacific Centurion and Pacific Goldfinch continues our strategy of developing a modern, fuel-efficient, well-specified and reliable fleet capable of supporting the exacting requirements of the offshore industry around the world.

Bogazici Of Turkey Deliver Amapola 1

BOGAZICI A.S. of Turkey have recently delivered Amapola 1, the first Robert Allan Ltd. designed RAstar 3000 tug, to International Offshore Engineering and Development Company, Panama for PDVSA of Venezuela. This new design rounds out the RAstar family of Terminal / Escort tugs, which to date encompasses lengths from 27m to 39m and bollard pulls of up 120 tonnes. The RAstar Class are a series of well-proven, high performance ASD terminal support tug designs developed for berthing and unberthing large ships, particularly tankers, at exposed terminals. They provide a high standard of tanker escort capability, emergency response, fire-fighting and oil recovery capabilities in the vicinity of oil and LNG terminals, and in sensitive environments.

Weakness Found with Oil Spill Response Equipment

Parat Halvorsen AS gathered key personnel from the maritime industry to a technical review and discussion of tank heating solutions for supply vessels with NOFO notation. Technical and operational persons from shipyards, shipowners, consultants and the NCA (Norwegian Coastal Administration) were present as practical tests were performed at the company fabrication and test facilities in Flekkefjord. The seminar also covered the basic background theories for the empirical tests. One important aspect being that oil has less than 20% of the thermal conductivity of water.

New Arctic Oil Spill Recovery Icebreaker

Aker Arctic Technology to introduce the ‘Heavy Duty’ oblique icebreaker project for Arctic operations (Aker ARC 100 HD) at upcoming expo. The ARC 100 HD is a new advance on what is already recognised as a true design innovation to allow ice-going vessel operations in the harshest of environments. It is distinguished by its inclusion of new technical solutions covering oil spill response. Formal launch coincides with the start of hull assembly work on the first vessel to be built to the ARC 100 concept for delivery to the Russian Ministry of Transport by early 2014.

Navy Tech in Paris Navy Technolgy Takes Center Stage

Many commercial marine products evolve from military roots. At Euronaval last month in Paris, contractors large and small from around the globe showcased new and emerging technologies. According to General Electric, there is a new era dawning for naval engineering and propulsion. “I’ve seen the future of naval propulsion, and it’s electrifying,” said GE Power Conversion’s Captain Mark Dannatt Royal Navy (retd.), speaking at Euronaval. Capt. Dannatt’s comments came as he outlined the latest advances in advanced naval electrical technology from a GE perspective.

STX Rauma Shipyard Starts Production

Start of production of the new Finnish Border Guard offshore patrol vessel at STX Rauma Shipyard. STX Finland Oy’s Rauma Shipyard started the production of next generation offshore patrol vessel to be built for the Finnish Border Guard. The start of production at the Rauma Shipyard was carried out following traditions. Chief of the Finnish Border Guard, Lieutenant General Jaakko Kaukanen pressed the launch button. The event held in the steel construction hall was witnessed by the representatives of the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Environment Institute, STX Finland and the classification society Germanisher Lloyd, and members of the press.
