Supply chain issues tied to liner shipping have been front page news throughout 2021; just about everyone agrees that there’s a problem. The underlying cause is right out of Economics 101: a surge in demand for moving containerized cargo, in the face of “inelastic” throughput capacity (which includes vessels and their landside interfaces to surface transportation, trucks and rail) that could not handle the swell, attributable to re-stocking of containerized cargo as economic activity recovered from the pandemic induced jolts.

Just over the horizon, a new ‘Integration Strategy’ promises offshore safety and efficiencies. Kongsberg’s Walk-to-Work technology is just the beginning. Maritime technology has come on in leaps and bounds since the turn of the century. We have the technology to keep an offshore support vessel on station within a 0.5-meter radius, even in the most severe weather conditions and sea states. We have the technology to manage power output, and control drives and thrusters to the ‘nth’ degree, providing safety and reliability for all ship handling operations. And we have the technology to deliver gigabytes of data to shore without paying for a helicopter or a mid-ocean drop off of hard drives or DVDs. So, what’s next? Arguably, the ‘big’ topic is unmanned vessels.

DNV GL's new Singapore Service Center (SSC) will streamline customer support and enhance customers’ experiences by giving them a single point of contact for all operational issues. Singapore is a growing maritime hub, which has hundreds of shipmanagers with approximately 1,500 DNV GL classed vessels managed from Singapore. The new SSC, together with DNV GL's existing technical helpdesk DATE (Direct Access to Technical Experts), aim to provide customers easier and improved access to the group’s services.

The number of ultra large vessels calling at the Port of Hamburg has been on the increase for years. This is resulting in some major challenges for the port operators, shipping companies and authorities. With the introduction of the Nautical Terminal Coordination (NTK), there is now a body to handle the centralised operational coordination of mega-ship calls for the first time – long before a vessel proceeds up the estuary of the river Elbe. Hallin Marine, a Superior Energy Services company, says it has completed a unique project for COOEC Subsea Technology, a wholly-own subsidiary of COOEC (China Offshore Oil Engineering Company) which  involved the replacement of 9 mooring lines beneath the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel HYSY111, while maintaining live operations. The oil and gas industry has previously witnessed the replacement of a single damaged mooring line replacement under such conditions; however this is the first time all FPSO mooring lines have been replaced as one continuous activity. The entire task was completed ahead of schedule without shutting down production on the facility, and with zero lost-time injury.

International classification society RINA has acted to tackle noise pollution of the seas by developing a voluntary notation which will apply to vessels for which efforts have been made to mitigate underwater noise. Paolo Moretti, Head of the Marine Business Line, RINA Services, said, “Noise is the new pollution. The international community has raised concern that the underwater noise generated by commercial shipping may have negative consequences on marine life, especially marine mammals. IMO has recently published MEPC Circ. 833 “Guidelines For The Reduction Of Underwater Noise From Commercial Shipping To Address Adverse Impacts On Marine Life” which sets out advice on design and operational solutions that may be adopted to reduce underwater radiated noise.

Ensuring that the US military is supported by the most advanced, effective technologies and tools is critical to the nation’s defense. Classification society ClassNK agreed to acquire maritime software house NAPA in a deal that the classification society said aims to improve safety and performance for the whole maritime industry. According to ClassNK, the acquisition will enhance the success and capabilities of both organizations. For ClassNK, which has worked with NAPA for nearly 10 years, the deal is a chance to expand and improve the wide range of services it offers to shipowners and shipyards, whilst also providing NAPA with the support to accelerate expansion of existing operations and access new markets.
