GRL launches ROVolution 4.0

Fugro-Rovtech Gets Subsea Simulator

Fugro General Robotics Limited (FGRL), supplier of subsea simulators, has delivered the first order for its next generation DeepTouch pilot training simulator to sister company Fugro-Rovtech. Seaway Pilots Train at MSI Newport

Saint Lawrence Seaway Pilots completed a High Speed Craft Bridge Resource Management course on Jan. 20 at MarineSafety's Newport Center. The course included a detailed review of high speed operations, including the subjects of wake effects, evacuation requirements, watchstanding requirements, ARPA optimization, and vulnerabilities of HSC design. The course was facilitated and instructed by Captain Fred Bronaugh, MSI Newport Business Development Director, Captain Grant Parker, consulting instructor from Kingston Marine , and Captain Ed Lynch, MSI Newport Director.

St. Lawrence Seaway Pilots Train at MSI

Seven Saint Lawrence Seaway Pilots completed a Bridge Resource Management course on March 24. The course placed emphasis on High Speed Operations and Procedures. A detailed review of the high-speed problem was conducted with emphasis on subjects such as wake effects, evacuation requirements, watch standing requirements, ARPA optimization, and vulnerabilities of HSC design.

Fugro Buys Two More GRL Simulators

General Robotics Limited (GRL) won an order for two additional ROVolution simulators from Fugro, which together with Fugro’s existing ROVolution simulator will be used to train ROV pilots on both the new Fugro-built advanced work class ROV, the FCV 3000, and a typical Fugro-owned intermediate class ROV, the Seaeye Tiger. The simulators will be delivered in the summer of 2007 and be sited in Aberdeen, Singapore and Macae (Brazil) to service these operating areas, where they will further extend the Fugro ROV pilot training program. The new simulators have been configured to model both the FCV 3000 ROV (equipped with a RigMaster grabber arm and Titan 4 manipulator) and the Seaeye Tiger ROV. Fugro’s existing ROVolution simulator is being upgraded to the same specification.

Brisbane Marine Pilots Train at MSI-Newport

Stephen Cummings and David Harris of the Brisbane Marine Pilots attended an Emergency Shiphandling course conducted September 13-17, 2004, at MarineSafety International's simulator training complex in Newport, RI. Topics covered included ship maneuvering in narrow channels and docking operations in tight quarters under difficult circumstances of wind and current. The pilots were also able to practice procedures for employing escort tugs using a computer model of the port of Brisbane, Australia. A new passenger terminal is being constructed in Brisbane, so procedures were developed and practiced for escorting and docking passengers ships.

Trinidad Pilots Train at MSI

During the period 24-27 July MSI Newport conducted Shiphandling training for three Trinidad Pilots for the Point Fortin LNG Terminal. Captain Bill Mackay was the Instructor/Facilitator. This course uses a data base model of the Point Fortin LNG Terminal created by MSI, and is designed to hone the pilots skill in bringing various sizes of LNG carriers into Point Fortin and alongside the LNG Terminal there. The course places the pilots in difficult environmental and emergency situations. This program was tailored to specific company operations and objectives. APA Chooses MSRC for Pilot Training

Canada's Atlantic Pilotage Authority (APA) once again chose the Maritime Simulation and Resource Centre (MSRC) as its preferred training organization for specialized SEAiq training on Portable Pilot Units (PPUs). A total of 16 pilots from Cape Breton Island Pilotage were trained by MSRC's Captain Bernard Cayer in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. PPUs are mobile devices such as laptops or tablets that can plug in to a ship’s navigation system, giving pilots added situational awareness, including access to real-time downloadable local navigational information.

ACL Announces Approval of Training Program

American Commercial Lines Inc. (ACL) has received United States Coast Guard approval of the nation’s first inland river accelerated pilot license training program in partnership with Northeast Maritime Institute of Fairhaven, Mass. On November 15, 2007 the United States Coast Guard approved a new Mate (Pilot) training program. This program can shorten the total time of license eligibility for Mate (the second and final stage in the licensing process of a professional mariner) by approximately 50%. The program includes classroom, simulator and sea time. The end result will be that a person who is new to the industry can achieve the rank of Full Mate in approximately 30-36 months, as opposed to the current five to six year licensing period.

ACP Charters Post-Panamax Ship for Pilot Training

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will charter a Post-Panamax vessel before the opening of the expanded Canal to be used for training purposes in the Third Set of Locks. The Executive Vice President of Operations Esteban Saenz reported that the Panama Canal will charter a Post-Panamax ship to train pilots and tugboat captains that will assist in transits through the new lane. Saenz said the vessel will be used several months before the opening of the expanded Canal to test the new locks. "This is one of the best ways to train our pilots and tug captains in the joint effort required to transit through the two new lock complexes of the expanded Canal," said Saenz. He added that since 2011 the Panama Canal has promoted workforce training for the operation of the expanded waterway.

Botany Bay Ship Pilot Training

Botany Bay was replicated for an Australian-first marine emergency training exercise that Sydney Pilot Service commissioned for four of its pilots. The wholly owned subsidiary of Sydney Ports Corporation recently conducted the new commercial Advanced Manned Model Pilot Training program at the Australian Ship Handling Centre at Port Ash. Participants had to pilot model ships, 1/25th the size of an actual ship, through simulated emergencies within the replicated Botany Bay. The bay was recreated using buoys, beacons, piles and temporary wharf lines.

CMI Gets New Transas Simulator

The installation by Transas of a multi-million dollar full mission simulator upgrade project is well on its way at the Caribbean Maritime Institute’s (CMI) Training Centre in Kingston, Jamaica, and is expected to be fully operational before the start of the September school year. Financed mainly by the European Development Fund (EDF) and the Caribbean Development Band (CDB), the simulator project is implemented by Transas and comprises its Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 navigational bridge with seven channels of visual display and the potential to expand that number to nine channels; Engine Room Simulator, ERS 3000; Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator (LCHS), and GMDSS simulator, TGS 4100.

Simulation Training at MSRC

In the world of maritime training, MSRC has carved a unique niche in the training of pilots. Founded in 2005, MSRC is a division of the Corporation of Lower St. Lawrence Pilots (CLSLP). The MSRC is a purpose-built simulator with a fully instrumented DNV Class “A” configured bridge with 330° visuals that exceed the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention. MSRC’s Full Mission Simulator (FMS) is one of the most advanced simulators of its type and is continually being upgraded. The Center is also equipped with three fully instrumented ship bridges, with a horizontal view of 240°.

Fugro Introduces Electric ROV Version of Deepworks

Fugro has developed a new version of its DeepWorks ROV simulator for the Saab Seaeye family of electric ROVs. The new version supports console integration of the Seaeye Tiger, Lynx, Cougar XT and Panther XT/XT Plus models. To cater for the training needs of a mixed fleet of ROVs, Fugro Operating Companies in UK, Singapore, UAE, Brazil, and Australia will be the first to benefit as an enhanced set of training configurations is rolled out across the company. Altamira Pilots Train at MSI

Pilots from the port of Altamira, Mexico, attended special training at MarineSafety International's Newport Simulator Center from October 1 to 5, 2007. The training used a full mission bridge as an LNG carrier and a smaller simulator as a 55 tonne ASD tug. Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven

A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.

NCA Enters Long Term Contract with FORCE

The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) has entered into a long term contract with FORCE Technology for simulator based training of 350 Pilots and VTS operators focussing on resource management and teamwork between pilots and VTS operators. The contract was secured after the NCA had issued an international tender for the training. ’We chose FORCE Technology because of their high competence level and their experience gained through many years of conducting training with a strong focus on Human Factors and Pedagogical methods within simulator based training’, explains Jon Leon Ervik, Head of Centre for Pilotage and Vessel Traffic Services…

New Simulation Complex for Dunkirk Pilot Station

Transas informs it has installed the fifth simulator for high-level training for pilots who operate in the port of Dunkirk in France. The pilot station is now equipped with the latest generation of the Transas navigational simulator Navi-Trainer Professional 5000, which capabilities allow to steer any kind of ship in combination with any propulsion and steering system available on the market, Transas said. The compact simulator version was particularly adapted to the Dunkirk station's budget and training objectives.
