Virginia Port Update on Handling of Hanjin, CKYHE Cargo

In light of the recent bankruptcy filing by Hanjin Shipping, The Port of Virginia has updated its policies and processes regarding the movement and loading of Hanjin vessels and containers. The following policy is effective as of Sept. Line onto a Hanjin vessel. Line vessels. These restrictions were requested by Cosco Container Lines, "K" Line, Yang Ming Line and Evergreen Line, which with Hanjin, compose the CKYHE shipping alliance. Knutsen Chooses Electric Power for LNG Ships

Converteam won a contract at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. in Korea to supply electric power and propulsion systems on board three LNG carriers for Norwegian ship owner Knutsen OAS Shipping AS. These 173,400-cu. m. LNG carriers will be Knutsen’s first with electric propulsion. They will be fittedwith Converteam’s solution based on induction motors and PWM type MV7000 converters. The vessels will be of twin skeg design and will be driven by two 13.6MW – 570 rpm high torque density induction motors each fed by two dual PWM type MV7000 converters associated with an advanced digital propulsion control system. Converteam will also supply the generators and the Main and Cargo MV switchboard.

Ballast-free LNG Carrier Project Advances

GTT, Lloyd's Register (LR) and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC) today launched the second phase of the "30,000m³ B-FREE LNG carrier" Joint Development Project (JDP). China's First Home-built Carrier to Start Sea Trials

China first domestically developed aircraft carrier looks set to begin sea trials after pictures appeared on the Chinese internet on Monday of it leaving its dock in the northeastern port of Dalian. The still-unnamed carrier was launched this time last year but since then has been undergoing fitting of weapons and other systems and has not yet entered service. Chinese President Xi Jinping is overseeing an ambitious military modernisation scheme, including stealth jets and anti-satellite missiles, as China ramps up its presence in the disputed South China Sea and around self-ruled Taiwan, an island it considers its own. GE Electric Propulsion Equipment for LNG Carriers

GE’s Power Conversion business has received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be built for the purpose of transporting LNG from Louisiana, U.S.A. Their construction is scheduled to be completed from 2017 through 2018. According to GE, from the perspective of improved performance, electric propulsion technology is optimal for LNG carriers. The U.S. Coast Guard said it is responding to a vessel fire near Trinidad, Calif. on Wednesday.A helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay has deployed in response to the fire aboard commercial fishing vessel Midori off the northern California coast.The Coast Guard said it also launched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Station Humboldt Bay to assist the stricken vessel.

Three rescued near Blount Island

The U.S. Coast Guard and good Samaritans came to the rescue of three people Monday after their vessel capsized near Blount Island. Coast Guard watchstanders in Jacksonville were notified via VHF-FM marine band radio channel 16 at 6:03 p.m. by a good Samaritan aboard the motor vessel Grand Mercury reporting three people in the water and a capsized 15-foot boat. A Coast Guard Station Mayport 29-foot Response Boat – Small boatcrew launched, arrived on scene at 6:25 p.m. and rescued one person from the water while the crew of the tugboat Sewells Point rescued two others.

Maran Takes Delivery of Electric LNG Carrier

Equipped with a GE electrical induction-based propulsion solution, the Woodside Rogers can be powered by tri-fuel engines that run on natural gas, marine diesel gas or heavy fuel oil.

The first electrical LNG carrier to be ordered by Maran Gas incorporating induction-based electric propulsion motor technology from GE’s Power Conversion business is expected to enter commercial service in July. The Woodside Rogers, built by one of the major Korean shipbuilders, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), at its shipyard near Busan, successfully completed sea trials in late April and was handed over to Maran Gas on July 1. COSCO Delivers Three Large Bulk Carriers

COSCO Corporation (Singapore) announce that subsidiaries of the Company’s 51% owned COSCO Shipyard Group have delivered three more bulk carriers to Asian owners 1. COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered two bulk carriers of 57000 DWT, “Wuxing 5” and “APJ SHIRIN”, respectively to its Asian buyers. 2. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 92500 DWT, “OCEAN SAPPHIRE”, to its Asian buyer. All the delivery documents were signed by and between the COSCO shipyards and the respective buyer in May 2012. The bulk carriers of 57000 DWT measure 189.99 meters in LOA (length of all), 32.26 meters in breadth and 18 meters in depth. The bulk carrier of 92500 DWT measures 229.2 meters in LOA (length of all), 38 meters in breadth and 20.7 meters in depth.

ABB Wins Electrical Contract for Drillships, LNG Carriers

ABB's order, worth $80 million from Samsung Heavy Industries, is to supply energy efficient drives, motors and electrical power systems for five drilling vessels and two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to be built at Samsung’s shipyard in Korea. The vessels will be used to extract, process and transport oil and gas. Samsung is building five drill ships (three for Seadrill Ltd. in Norway, one for Pacific Drilling S.A in Brazil and one for Ensco Plc in the UK) and two LNG carrier vessels for Golar LNG Ltd in the UK. China COSCO Shipyards Deliver Two More Bulk Carriers

COSCO (Guangdong) and COSCO (Dalian) Shipyards have each recently delivered bulk carriers to European owners. COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 35000 dwt, “CHIOS LUCK”, to its European buyer. The bulk carrier measures 179.99 meters in LOA, 30 meters in breadth and 14.7 meters in depth. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 92500 dwt, “OCEAN TOPAZ”, to its European buyer. The bulk carrier measures 229.17 meters in LOA,  38.01 meters in breadth and 20.7 meters in depth. COSCO informs that both the delivery documents were signed by and between the COSCO shipyards and the respective buyers in May 2013.

The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) entered the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations April 18, 2018 as part of a routine deployment in support of NATO allies, European and African partner nations, coalition partners, and U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa. The presence of the HSTCSG demonstrates the multi-mission capability of the U.S. Navy’s globally deployed force and is part of an ongoing rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

WW and OW Acquire HMM’s Car Carrier Division

Representatives from Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) and Wallenius Lines AB (OW) on August 10, 2002 signed the agreement with Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. (HMM) on the acquisition of HMM’s car carrier division. The terms of the agreement include long-term exclusive contracts with Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) and Kia Motor Corporation (KMC) on shipping their car exports for an initial five-year period, with provision for extensions. The newly-established company, which will acquire HMM’s car carrier division, will be incorporated in Korea, with WW and OW together holding 80 percent and with HMC and KMC together holding 20 percent. The price for the acquisition will be $1.3 billion plus the assumption of future vessel charter obligations.

China Shipyards Deliver Two More Bulkers

COSCO Corporation (Singapore) say a bulk carrier has been delivered from each of its two subsidiary shipyards in China. The two deliveries are as follows: 1. COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 57,000 dwt, “OCEAN LOVE”, to its European buyer. This ship measures 189.99 meters in LOA and 32.26 meters in breadth. 2. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 82,000 dwt, “XIN TANG SHAN HAI 1”, to its Chinese buyer. This new  bulk carrier measures 229 meters in LOA  and 32.26 meters in breadth. The company stattes that the delivery documents were signed by and between COSCO shipyards and the respective buyers recently.
