Virginia Port Update on Handling of Hanjin, CKYHE Cargo

In light of the recent bankruptcy filing by Hanjin Shipping, The Port of Virginia has updated its policies and processes regarding the movement and loading of Hanjin vessels and containers. The following policy is effective as of Sept. Line onto a Hanjin vessel. Line vessels. These restrictions were requested by Cosco Container Lines, "K" Line, Yang Ming Line and Evergreen Line, which with Hanjin, compose the CKYHE shipping alliance. Knutsen Chooses Electric Power for LNG Ships

Converteam won a contract at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. in Korea to supply electric power and propulsion systems on board three LNG carriers for Norwegian ship owner Knutsen OAS Shipping AS. These 173,400-cu. m. LNG carriers will be Knutsen’s first with electric propulsion. They will be fittedwith Converteam’s solution based on induction motors and PWM type MV7000 converters. The vessels will be of twin skeg design and will be driven by two 13.6MW – 570 rpm high torque density induction motors each fed by two dual PWM type MV7000 converters associated with an advanced digital propulsion control system. Converteam will also supply the generators and the Main and Cargo MV switchboard.

A bankruptcy of Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) would become the biggest ever in the shipping sector, and the creditors seem on the way to taking over control with the shipping group. Without further government support, bankruptcy is growing closer for Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) after the company's bondholders rejected the company's proposed debt rescheduling plan, says Alphaliner. Washburn & Doughty Wins Hybrid Tug Orders

East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction. The vessel will be built as a Harbor Assist Vessel as defined in USCG Subchapter M and admeasure less than 200 gross tons U.S. regulatory tonnage. GE Electric Propulsion Equipment for LNG Carriers

GE’s Power Conversion business has received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be built for the purpose of transporting LNG from Louisiana, U.S.A. Their construction is scheduled to be completed from 2017 through 2018. Burger Boat Tò-Kalòn & Ingot Award Finalists

Burger Boat Company announced that Tò-Kalòn, a 2008 101.5-ft Enclosed Bridge Motor Yacht  and INGOT, a 2008 153-ft Tri-Deck Motor Yacht have been selected by the International Superyacht Society membership as finalists for the 2009 International Superyacht Society Design Awards in their respective categories. Dynagas, GasLog, Golar LNG Team up to Operate LNG Carrier Pool

Maran Takes Delivery of Electric LNG Carrier

Equipped with a GE electrical induction-based propulsion solution, the Woodside Rogers can be powered by tri-fuel engines that run on natural gas, marine diesel gas or heavy fuel oil.

The first electrical LNG carrier to be ordered by Maran Gas incorporating induction-based electric propulsion motor technology from GE’s Power Conversion business is expected to enter commercial service in July. The Woodside Rogers, built by one of the major Korean shipbuilders, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), at its shipyard near Busan, successfully completed sea trials in late April and was handed over to Maran Gas on July 1. China COSCO Shipyards Deliver Two More Bulk Carriers

COSCO (Guangdong) and COSCO (Dalian) Shipyards have each recently delivered bulk carriers to European owners. COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 35000 dwt, “CHIOS LUCK”, to its European buyer. The bulk carrier measures 179.99 meters in LOA, 30 meters in breadth and 14.7 meters in depth. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 92500 dwt, “OCEAN TOPAZ”, to its European buyer. The bulk carrier measures 229.17 meters in LOA,  38.01 meters in breadth and 20.7 meters in depth. COSCO informs that both the delivery documents were signed by and between the COSCO shipyards and the respective buyers in May 2013.

COSCO Delivers Three Large Bulk Carriers

COSCO Corporation (Singapore) announce that subsidiaries of the Company’s 51% owned COSCO Shipyard Group have delivered three more bulk carriers to Asian owners 1. COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered two bulk carriers of 57000 DWT, “Wuxing 5” and “APJ SHIRIN”, respectively to its Asian buyers. 2. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 92500 DWT, “OCEAN SAPPHIRE”, to its Asian buyer. All the delivery documents were signed by and between the COSCO shipyards and the respective buyer in May 2012. The bulk carriers of 57000 DWT measure 189.99 meters in LOA (length of all), 32.26 meters in breadth and 18 meters in depth. The bulk carrier of 92500 DWT measures 229.2 meters in LOA (length of all), 38 meters in breadth and 20.7 meters in depth.

ABB Wins Electrical Contract for Drillships, LNG Carriers

ABB's order, worth $80 million from Samsung Heavy Industries, is to supply energy efficient drives, motors and electrical power systems for five drilling vessels and two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to be built at Samsung’s shipyard in Korea. The vessels will be used to extract, process and transport oil and gas. Samsung is building five drill ships (three for Seadrill Ltd. in Norway, one for Pacific Drilling S.A in Brazil and one for Ensco Plc in the UK) and two LNG carrier vessels for Golar LNG Ltd in the UK. China Shipyards Deliver Two More Bulkers

COSCO Corporation (Singapore) say a bulk carrier has been delivered from each of its two subsidiary shipyards in China. The two deliveries are as follows: 1. COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 57,000 dwt, “OCEAN LOVE”, to its European buyer. This ship measures 189.99 meters in LOA and 32.26 meters in breadth. 2. COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard Co., Ltd has delivered a bulk carrier of 82,000 dwt, “XIN TANG SHAN HAI 1”, to its Chinese buyer. This new  bulk carrier measures 229 meters in LOA  and 32.26 meters in breadth. The company stattes that the delivery documents were signed by and between COSCO shipyards and the respective buyers recently.

Xiamen-built RoRo Sold to Britain

China delivered a large RoRo for motor vehicles to Zodiac shipping company in Britain. Named Morning Miracle, the ship was independently developed and built by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. It is the first of the six roll-on-roll-off vessels for motor vehicles the British firm ordered from the Xiamen company. The 182.8-meter-long Morning Miracle is able to accomodate 4,900 cars and it can also load many other types of vehicles, including trucks and dump carriers, the company officials said. G E Shipping Sells Supramax

India’s largest private sector shipping company  Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited (G E Shipping) has contracted to sell its 2003 built Supramax Dry Bulk Carrier Jag Rahul of about 52,364 dwt. G E Shipping said that the vessel will be delivered to the new buyer in Q4 FY 2017-18. The Company’s current fleet (including Jag Rahul) stands at 48 vessels, comprising 32 tankers (12crude carriers, 17 product tankers, 3 LPG carrier) and 16 dry bulk carriers (1 Capesize, 8 Kamsarmax, 7 Supramax) with an average age of 10.24 years aggregating 3.93 mn dwt.

Gulf Navigation Refinances Two Carriers

Gulf Navigation Holding PJSC has announced refinancing 'Gulf Mishref' and 'Gulf Mirdif' petrochemical carriers in less than a month after increasing its capital to AED 1 billion through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). The move underlines the increasing demand for the company’s shipping services, which requires increasing its fleet capacity to meet the demand for its services in the region. Refinancing the two carriers, Gulf Mishref and Gulf Mirdif, is an important addition to the company's petrochemical transportation capabilities.

Converteam Delivers First 36MW Generator

Power conversion specialist Converteam has shipped the first of two massive 75 tonne, 36 Megawatt generators designed specifically to match the electrical power requirement of the propulsion motors for the Royal Navy's Queen     Elizabeth Class (QEC) aircraft carriers. These are major components of the electrical system for the two new 65.000 tonne ships for which Converteam has designed the innovative Integrated Full Electric Power (IFEP) and propulsion system. The two 36 MW generators, manufactured in Rugby, will supply the four 20 MW Converteam Advanced    Induction Motors.

FMCSA – Roadability Rule Published

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued its final rule addressing requirements for intermodal equipment providers (sometimes referred to as the roadability rule). The regulations require providers of intermodal equipment (e.g., shipping container chassis) to register and file with the FMCSA an Intermodal Equipment Provider Identification Report; establish a systematic inspection, repair, and maintenance program to assure the safe operating condition of each intermodal chassis; maintain documentation of their maintenance program; and provide a means to effectively respond to driver and motor carrier reports about intermodal chassis mechanical defects and deficiencies.

WW and OW Acquire HMM’s Car Carrier Division

Representatives from Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) and Wallenius Lines AB (OW) on August 10, 2002 signed the agreement with Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. (HMM) on the acquisition of HMM’s car carrier division. The terms of the agreement include long-term exclusive contracts with Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) and Kia Motor Corporation (KMC) on shipping their car exports for an initial five-year period, with provision for extensions. The newly-established company, which will acquire HMM’s car carrier division, will be incorporated in Korea, with WW and OW together holding 80 percent and with HMC and KMC together holding 20 percent. The price for the acquisition will be $1.3 billion plus the assumption of future vessel charter obligations.

GE to Propel Maran LNG Carriers

Induction-based electric propulsion motor technology from GE’s Power Conversion business will be used to power four new LNG carriers that Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries will build for Maran Gas Maritime, the gas shipping unit of the Angelicoussis Shipping Group.
