Malaysia Keeps on Building

In spite of the global economic downturn of 2010, builders in Eastern Malaysia such as Shin Yang Shipyard maintained a steady output in 2010. As a member of the Shin Yang Group of Companies, the shipyard has extensive support and in some cases can market to its own sister companies. The anchor handling tug Danem 19 was launched from the Shin Yang Shipyard for the Shin Yang Shipping Corporation as one of several vessels added to the fleet in 2010. At 164 ft by 41 ft the 4400 HP Danum 119 is a handy sized AHT with lots of versatility.

Cargotec Cement Handling Systems for Malaysian Barges

At the end of January Cargotec received an order for MacGregor cement self-loading/unloading systems to be installed on two 7,000 dwt barges being built by Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Malaysia. Delivery to Shin Yang Shipping is scheduled for September 2011 and the barges will trade on Malaysian routes between Kuching and Sibu, and between Kuching and Miri. The cargo owner is CMS Cement Sdn Bhd, a cement manufacturer in Sarawak. The pneumatic systems will have rated capacities of 300 t/h for loading and 250 t/h for unloading. 

Shin Yang Builds Tanker/Landing Craft

At the end of March Shin Yang Shipping took delivery of an interesting new combination tanker and landing barge. Built at the company’s own yard to a design by Singapore’s Conan Wu and Associates (http://cwa.com.sg/ ). The 78x16-meter craft has a molded depth of 4.8 meters. Forward of the four-level deck house and beneath the ro-ro cargo deck, ten cargo tanks are arranged fore and aft in five port and starboard pairs. The tanks have a total volume of 1994 cubic meters. Named the Danum 23, the vessel’s primary role will be to transport methanol for use in making glue by the parent company, Shin Yang Sdn Bhd. (www.shinyang.com.my ), who are among the world’s largest plywood manufacturers.

One More Tug From Shin Yang Shipyard

In 2003, Shin Yang Shipyard Sdn Bhd obtained the ISO 9002 certification in shipbuilding and maintenance and related metal fabrication activities. By 2004 the yard had delivered 178 vessels of which 86 were tugboats. In August 2007 the yard delivered their Hull #249, the tug Danum 61. Although the yard regularly builds for export, this 101 x 31-ft. tug was delivered to a Malaysian customer and is registered in Kuching Sarawak. Suitable for work in the offshore oil industry the sturdy vessel includes such features as a marked rescue zone on both port and starboard sides with bulwark doors. On deck a 30-ton towing winch, from Singapore’s ME Winch, carries 2,624 ft. of 44-m/m-diameter tow wire.

Seismic Triplets for Mainport

East Malaysia’s Shin Yang Shipyard has begun construction of three new support vessels for Mainport. Located in Miri, Sarawak the Shin Yang Shipyard has developed an impressive record in the fabrication of sophisticated off shore vessels such as the anchor-handling tug Danem 19. Two of the new support vessels, the Mainport Cedar and Mainport Pine, will be 54.6 by 13.8-meter supply, seismic support vessels. The third, the Mainport Kells, will be somewhat smaller at 37 by 8.7-meter, and will also carry the designation supply, seismic support vessel.

After delivery to Singaporean owner, Briggs Singapore Pte. Ltd., the 1700 hp tug Forth Hunter will be be put to work in Ukraine. Powered by a pair of Cummins KTA38-M2 engines, each delivering 1350 hp at 1900 RPM (Heavy Duty Rating) to nozzled propellers, the tug underwent bollard test prior to delivery that recorded pulls up to 35-tonnes. The Scott & English Miri division supplied the engines. Designed by Conan Wu and Associates http://cwa.com.sg the 37 by 11.4-meter tug was launched at the Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Sarawak East Malaysia.

Daewoo Heavy President Safe For Now

While many of troubled Daewoo Group’s top executives have been ousted by South Korean creditors who rescued the troubled Daewoo Group from collapse last July, it appears that the head of the shipbuilding division will stay. Creditors voted to retain Daewoo Heavy Industries President Shin Young-kyun as president of its shipbuilding division and picked Yang Jae-shin, president of Daewoo Motor's Poland subsidiary, to lead Daewoo Heavy's machinery division.

Maintenance Work Boat from Shin Yang

The Malaysian firm Ajang Shipping recently took delivery of a versatile maintenance workboat from the Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia. The 246 by 65.5 ft Ajang Haidah has a moulded depth of 31.3 ft with a 16.5 ft design draft. Designed by Conan Wu & Associates of Singapore the new vessel is powered by a pair of 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines each developing 1800 BHP at 1900 RPM. The engines turn fixed pitch four-blade 2100 by 1512 m/m propellers through Reintjes WAF664 gears with ratios of 5.044:1. This gives the vessel a speed of eleven knots.

Shin Yang Shipyard of Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia has delivered the sister ships MV Anis and MV Alya. Designed by Wartsila Ship Design Singapore, the 83.8-meter (275-foot) maintenance and work boats have massive capacities. Accommodation is provided for up to 199 people. Tankage is provided for 800 cubic meters of fuel and 900 m3 of water. The vessels each have two 50 m3 per day water-makers. Additionally there is tankage for 80 m3 of urea, 20 m3 of sludge, and 10 m3 of lube oil. There is 700 square meters of open deck cargo space.

Mainport: People and Business from Ireland to Malaysia

Recently, Mainport, a firm based in Cork Ireland with a range of subsidiaries in diverse marine fields and diverse locations from South Africa to the Caspian and at home in Ireland, extended business to Malaysia where the company is having two new seismic support vessels built at the Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Sarawak. The firm sponsored teams to a futsal tournament composed of the shipyard crews building the Mainport Cedar and Mainport Pine. In this manner the firm brought the workers into the global community that is represented by the innovative firm.

Strong Track-record Wins Repeat MacGregor Orders

A series of new MacGregor offshore winch orders, secured in October, will serve the strong demand for maintenance, hook-up and commissioning services for existing oil platforms within the shallow water region of the Malay basin, says Francis Wong, Director, Segment Sales and Marketing, Offshore. "As oil prices remain high and oil majors continue to invest in exploration and production activities in the region, this has continued to boost the demand for new businesses relating to these services," explains Mr Wong. "Consequently, maintenance work boats and barges are in high demand to serve the needs of the area's oil platforms, many of which are operated by Petronas and Shell.

Syscorp Focuses on Domestic Routes

Shin Yang Shipping Corp Bhd (Syscorp) has shifted the focus of its container shipping business to domestic routes in the face of continued volatility in the international container shipping market, reports the Star. The leading Malaysian shipping company has realigned its focus to domestic container shipping routes with some 95% of its 14 container ships deployed on routes within Malaysia, group financial controller Richard Ling said. “A majority of these container ships ply Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia ports,” he told StarBiz.

Yang Ming Announces Subsidiary in Thailand

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation will establish a subsidiary in Thailand - Yang Ming Line (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The new company will provide all services starting 1st January 2018. Mr. Derek Chen is officially appointed as its President. Thailand is located in a strategical position in the middle of Southeast Asia with strong links to neighboring countries, whose economy has been growing steadily over the years. It is expected to see more rapid expansion of the market in the near future.

News: Sarawak: Taking a Global Position

To many westerners the names Borneo and Sarawak conjure up images of jungle rivers and dugout canoes. While the jungle rivers remain, the dug out canoes have largely been replaced by modern steel ferries and tugs. The Malaysian province of Sarawak has gained considerable affluence over the past half century from its strong forest industry, but as is the case throughout much of the world, this is now in decline. But the forest industry created a maritime legacy in the many small shipyards that developed to build work boats for moving the logs and lumber to market. The skills and resources built up during the boom times in the forest industry have funded a number of newer shipyards and provided updated equipment to established yards.

Aker Yards Names New COO

Aker Yards has appointed Sang-Ho Shin as Chief Operating Officer (COO).   Shin comes from a position as vice president of STX Shipbuilding in , where he has been chief for the Jinhae shipyard. Sang-Ho Shin has held several senior management positions within the STX group since 1980, and has a university education within industrial strategy and mechanical engineering.  Aker Yards, Mr. Shin will focus on production efficiency, procurement, logistics, knowledge transfer, technology & innovation.

Su-Jou Kim New President & CEO STX Europe

STX Europe AS appointed Su-Jou Kim as its new President and CEO. Su-Jou Kim will replace Sang-Ho Shin, and will start in his new position with immediate effect. Sang-Ho Shin joined STX Europe in September 2008, initially as COO, and since May 2009 as President & CEO. Shin has been appointed COO of STX Offshore & Shipbuilding and head of STX's shipbuilding operations in Korea. Shin will remain a Board member of STX Europe AS. Su-Jou Kim has held various management positions within the STX Business Group - most recently as Head of Business Development and Deputy President of STX Corporation. Mr Kim is well known with STX Europe since he spent significant amounts of time with the company in 2008, including holding the position of Chairman of STX Europe AS from September 2008 to March 2009.

Coal Carrier Shin Sekiyo Delivered

On January 15, a new coal carrier, Shin Sekiyo, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture). A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by NYK chairman Yasumi Kudo and representatives from Chugoku Electric Power Co. Inc. Shin Sekiyo is the successor to the first Sekiyo operated by NYK. After delivery, the ship will be assigned to transport coal mainly from Australia and Indonesia to power plants operated by Chugoku Electric Power.

Seaspan Acquires First 14000 TEU Boxship

Seaspan Corporation has accepted delivery of a 14000 TEU containership, the Yang Ming Wish. The new containership, which was constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's first 14000 TEU SAVER design containership and second delivery in 2015. The Yang Ming Wish will commence a ten-year, fixed-rate time charter with Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. ("Yang Ming"). Yang Ming may extend the charter for up to an additional two years. The ship is the first of a total of eight 14000 TEU SAVER design vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to Yang Ming.

Yang Ming to Float 500 mln Shares

The Taiwanese ocean carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport will make a public offering of 500 million shares as part of the company's ongoing recapitalization plan, the Taiwanese ocean carrier said in a statement . It will offer the shares to existing shareholders, Yang Ming employees and the general public as part of the company's ongoing recapitalization plan. Yang Ming Makes Exec Changes

Taiwan's second largest shipping firm, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. said its board decided to let chairman T.H. Chen serve concurrently as company president. The board appointed former president Frank Lu to be the firm's chief adviser, Yang Ming said in a statement. Lu left Yang Ming to be chairman of Taiwan Navigation Co., it said. The two shipping firms were formerly state-owned companies and were privatized in recent years.

Evergreen, Yang Ming Downgraded

U.S. investment bank Salomon Smith Barney downgraded Taiwan's Evergreen Marine Corp. to underperform from neutral and Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. to underperform from outperform. Salomon, in a September 19 research note seen by Reuters on Thursday, said it was lowering earnings expectations and ratings for Evergreen and Yang Ming. Salomon set a T$16 target price for Evergreen, the world's largest shipping company, and T$10 for Yang Ming, Taiwan's second largest shipping firm. On Thursday, Evergreen shares ended up T$0.3 at T$18.6, Yang Ming shares were up T$0.3 at T$12.4. Salomon said the main weakness for Evergreen, the flagship of the Evergreen Group, lies in its complex organization, while Yang Ming's core earnings are a major concern.
