TUI to Cut 2,000 Jobs at CP Ships

TUI AG plans to cut 2,000 jobs at the CP Ships cargo shipping company it acquired last year, Forbes reported. The job cuts will be spread across 200 CP Ships locations worldwide. However, it will not cut any jobs in Germany. CP Ships belongs to TUI's Hapag-Lloyd AG shipping unit, which will have a total of 7,000 employees. This total includes 3,000 CP Ships employees who will retain their positions within the merged entity. (Source: Forbes)

MTN Connects Silversea Cruises

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN) announced an agreement with Silversea Cruises to provide a complete package of onboard communications capabilities. Hapag-Lloyd – Hamburg Süd Merger Put on Ice

The shareholders of Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd have jointly concluded to discontinue talks temporarily. Hamburg Süd say they do not wish to comment publicly on the subject matter of the points under discussion. It does, however, expressly point out that the owners of Hamburg Süd – unlike the impression conveyed in various press articles – positively favour a flotation of the merged new company if certain conditions are met. The Advisory Board and Executive Board of Hamburg Süd remain firmly of the view that the merger of Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd would be of enormous benefit for both companies as well as for Hamburg as a shipping location.

ACL Announces New Scheduled Barge Transportation Service

American Commercial Lines Inc. has initiated scheduled barge transportation service on major river segments. Approximately 80% of ACL's freight volume moves between Baton Rouge, LA and Cairo, IL. In February 2007, ACL initiated scheduled sailings between these two terminals. ACL now offers 6th morning arrival when moving southbound from Cairo to Baton Rouge and 7th morning arrival when moving northbound from Baton Rouge to Cairo. ACL will also establish new service schedule products to significant shipping locations such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati in the north, as well as New Orleans and Houston in the south. ACL previously announced the capture of $30 million of organic growth in 2007.

Shipbuilding: $13.3 Mln Awarded for R&D Projects

NATO Unconcerned by Russian Warships in English Channel

A squadron of Russian warships entered the English Channel on Friday but a NATO official dismissed a Russian media report that they were there to conduct military exercises. Russian news agency RIA quoted the Northern Fleet as saying its vessels, led by anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, had passed through the Strait of Dover and were now in international waters in the Seine Bay to wait for a storm to pass. "While it is anchored the crew are undertaking a series of exercises on how to tackle infiltrating submarine forces and are training on survival techniques in the case of flooding or fire," RIA quoted the Northern Fleet as saying in a statement. The Russian navy could not reached for comment and the Defence Ministry declined to comment on the report.

Propeller Blades Repaired Underwater

With all five blades of its propeller severely bent, a 290-meter container vessel needed a fast, on-site solution to restore the propeller’s balance and efficiency. Hydrex diver/technicians are trained to carry out repairs underwater in the shortest possible time frame and a team was therefore mobilized to the ship’s location in Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory to perform a cold straightening of the blades. The divers installed a monitoring station on a workboat and made all the required preparations.

Hydrex Performs Underwater Propeller Blade Straightening

In April, a diver/technician team performed propeller blade straightening operations on two vessels at anchorage in Kalundborg, Denmark. First the bent blades of a 225–meter bulk carrier were restored. The team then straightened the damaged blades of 158-meter reefer in the same location. By taking advantage of the in-house developed cold straightening technique, damaged blades can be straightened underwater. This allows a ship to return to commercial operations without the need to drydock. Optimum efficiency of the propellers can be restored by bringing the blades back to their original form.

ICS Meets with Ministers to Discuss Arctic Shipping

At a Summit in Oslo on June 5, Board Members of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) met with Ministers from major shipping nations and the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to discuss Arctic Shipping. The Oslo 2013 Maritime Summit, coordinated by the Norwegian Government and attended by Ministers and senior officials from Greece, Japan, Norway, Russia, Singapore, United States and the European Commission, underlined the need for government and industry cooperation in order to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Arctic in a way that reconciles the need for both environmental and economic sustainability.

Bay Wins NOAA RV Deal

Bay Electronics Inc. announced they have been awarded a subcontract from Fincantieri's Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Wisconsin. The company will provide design services, equipment and technical support for an Integrated Bridge System, Navigation System, Radio Communication System and Master Clock System. Bay Electronics was one of three Suppliers that competed for this project in the construction of a new fisheries survey vessel. This $1.3 million dollar contract is for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hull FSV-6, currently under construction at the Marinette Marine Shipyard. The ships mission is to provide scientific data from weather forecasts and climate monitoring, to fisheries management, and to support marine commerce.

Seven Seas Explorer Spaciously Intimate

The cruise ship being billed as "the most luxurious ship ever built" will also feature some of the largest cabins  and balconies afloat. The suites on the Seven Seas Explorer, a cruise ship coming next summer, will be distinguished by some of the largest balconies at sea said Jason Montague, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Through August 2015, the 750-passenger vessel, which debuts in July 2016, is about halfway through the construction process. Montague hosted a preview of two of the most prevalent suite models here at the Fincantieri ship yard where the Explorer is being built.

Coast Guard Rescues Crew of Cargo Ship

The Coast Guard hoisted 17 crewmen off a disabled cargo ship 180 nautical miles southeast of Elizabeth City, N.C. today. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center, Norfolk (RCC) received a distress signal at 8:04 a.m. reporting that the 600-foot cargo vessel White Seal was disabled, rolling 45-degrees and taking on water. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules and two HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Air Station Elizabeth City launched to hoist the crewmen from the ship. Seventeen people were hoisted from the ship aboard one of the HH-60 Jayhawks. During the rescue, seas reached heights of 30-40 feet and winds up to 35-45 knots. Blowing snow and sleet reduced visibility to about one-half mile, he added. The Hercules and Jayhawk arrived at Wilmington, N.C. International Airport early this afternoon.

Simultaneous Stern Tube Seal and Propeller Repair on Vessel

Last week a Hydrex diver/technician team replaced three seals on a 180-meter tanker berthed in New York while concurrently cropping two of its propeller blades to restore balance to the propeller. The team mobilized from the Hydrex office in Tampa together with all the equipment they needed for the operation. In New York an Aegir Marine specialist joined the team at the ship’s location and the team made all necessary preparations to begin the repair. Both operations were carried out at the same time while the ship was trimmed and at some 60 meters from the quayside.

The workboat was then positioned next to the vessel and the team leader went on board to discuss the details of the operation with the captain and the chief engineer of the ship and to go over the safety procedures.

First Cargo Transhipped at Rotterdam's Sheltered Waters Facility

The Port of Rotterdam says that the first commercial cargo has been transhipped on the inner waters of Maasvlakte 2. At one of the two specially designed berths, oil products were transhipped from the ‘Blue Marlin’ to the ‘Chemtrans Sea’. As the berths are sheltered, it is possible to work faster, more reliably and more safely than on open sea. Leaking Tanker Not Permitted to Enter Ports

Underwater repair allows vessel to continue its schedule. When the fore as well as the aft stern tube seals of a 247-meter tanker were leaking, the vessel was not given permission to enter any ports. Unloading the vessel at sea and going to drydock seemed the only option for the vessel, until Hydrex sent a diver/technician team with one of the company’s flexible mobdocks to the ship’s location in Port Gentil, Gabon, to replace both sets of stern tube seals on-site. The team loaded the necessary equipment on a barge on which they set up a work station to monitor all underwater activities. The barge then sailed to the tanker and the Hydrex team leader met up with the vessel’s owner and superintendent.

Quick Propeller Repair Prevents Drydocking

Recently a team of Hydrex diver/technicians performed a propeller blade cropping on a 190-meter container bulker berthed in Hamburg. Two parts of the tip of one of the four propeller blades were damaged and needed to be cropped to restore the propeller’s efficiency. Having developed different procedures for different kinds of damage, Hydrex teams are equipped and trained to make the best out of a bent or broken propeller. Ideally, the in-house developed cold straightening technique is used.

Palau Ship Registry Reaches Panama

Palau International Ship Registry (PISR) said it has expanded its global reach into 29 countries with a total of 42 Deputy Registrar offices around the globe. The maritime hub of Panama is one of the PISR offices to deliver state of the art registration services and has now appointed Melyssa Alejandra Barrios, Deputy Registrar for PISR. Panos Kirnidis, CEO of Palau International Ship Registry, said, “Melyssa has extensive knowledge of the region and is an expert in Ship Registration issues and associated legal affairs. Study Backs Up Cruise Industry’s Commitment to Environment

The results of two recent environmental studies regarding cruise ship wastewater discharge provide new and significant scientific insight into the low environmental impacts of cruise ship operations on the marine environment. Two independent yet interrelated studies by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) provide a major step in understanding the environmental impact of cruise ships. Significantly, results from a recent EPA study showed that the dilution of discharges from cruise ships moving between 9.1 and 17.4 knots are diluted by a factor of between 200,000:1 and 640,000:1. Measured dilutions were found to be significantly higher than the 40,000:1 initial dilution prediction made in 2000 by the cruise industry.

Carnival Splendor – Update

At approximately 6 am Monday morning, Nov. 8, (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire was extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew. The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. Thus far, one tug boat has reached the ship and has begun towing with additional tugs en route to expedite the vessel’s return. Given the ship’s speed and current position, we have decided to take the vessel to San Diego where it is expected to arrive late Thursday. Additionally, we are in the process of making all the necessary hotel and flight arrangements for our guests.
