Coast Guard Investigates Bridge Allision
New Orleans -Coast Guard personnel and state officials investigated an incident where a crane barge floated away from its moorings at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday night and hit the Huey P. Long Bridge. No one was injured and the bridge was not damaged in the accident. The barge was originally moored at the Avondale Shipyard facility, with three smaller barges connected to it. The lines that moored the barge to the dock broke and it floated approximately 200-yards down river striking the bridge. The crane struck the underside of the bridge, snagging on some tension wires. The barge did not hit any of the stone foundations, supporting the bridge. The barge did partically block a portion of the ship channel, but vessel traffic was not seriously affected.
Alstom Wins French Navy Contract
Alstom SA secured a contract from military shipbuilder Direction des Constructions Navales to help build two military transport vessels for the French armed forces. Alstom's Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard on France's west coast will provide forward accommodation sections for the 200-m ships, designed to transport 450 military personnel. The vessels, to be delivered in the second quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006, would each house six helicopter pads and four smaller barges in which troops would disembark. Alstom did not disclose a price for the contract but said that the work carried out on the two ships would be equivalent to that involved in building one medium-sized cruise ship. - (Reuters)
Help for Jack-up Companies to Meet Code of Practice
The International Jack Up Barge Owners Association (IJUBOA) established its Code of Practice last year, providing a standard against which companies can be audited. It is based on the International Safety Management (ISM) code. After a successful audit, companies get a “Certificate of Conformity” similar to the ISM “Document of Compliance.” A major change to current practice for those operating small barges is that the code requires companies to appoint a Designated Person Ashore to bring all operators in line with those already complying with ISM.

SENER Designs Two Waste Collection Barges
The SENER engineering and technology group has been placed in charge of the basic and detail engineering for two double-hulled ships for collecting liquid oily waste from ships and solid waste in compliance with MARPOL regulations. The two barges are for the shipbuilder Tecnología Medio Ambiente (TMA), and they are being built in Galicia’s Nodosa shipyard. SENER’s design will help TMA conduct its activities efficiently, reducing its environmental impact to a minimum and complying with its commitment to care for and respect nature.

Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven
A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.
Third Mitsubishi Installation Powers LA Carriers

The third such installation for LA Carriers, it allows the company to fulfill its promise of just-in-time delivery. A recently built 98' tug, M/V Karen Koby, was fitted with twin ABS-certified S12R-Y2MPTK Mitsubishi engines rated 1,260 hp at 1,600 rpm, as well as 50kW FPT generators.
Petrobangla Signs $950mln Deal with Petronet for LNG Terminal
Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) signed an initial agreement with India's energy company Petronet LNG Limited to set up an LNG re-gasification terminal on Kutubdia Island and a pipeline at an estimated cost of $950 million. Prabhat Singh, managing director and chief executive officer, Petonet and Syed Ashfaquzzaman, secretary, Petrobangla, sign an agreement at Petrobangla Bhaban in Dakka. The agreement aims to set up liquefied natural gas infrastructure, which includes a land-based LNG terminal and a pipeline to carry the re-gasified LNG.
Record Freight Handled by Antwerp Port

Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger
Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. The build contract includes an option for a second ATB. Once built and deployed, Crowley will operate the ATB under a long-term charter with Alaska-based Petro Star Inc.…
62 Barges Break Free on Ohio River
More than five dozen barges have reportedly broken free due to ice and high water at two separate locations on the Ohio River. So far 59 of the 62 breakaway barges have been recovered, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, who said it is working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and industry partners in response to the incidents near Pittsburgh, Pa., and Moundsville, W.Va. By Monday, 34 of the reported 35 breakaway barges from fleeting areas at mile maker 94 near Moundsville have been recovered and secured, while 25 of the 27 breakaway barges from Jack’s Run Fleeting area at mile marker 4 near Pittsburgh have been accounted for, and security video has shown seven of the barges went over Emsworth Lock & Dam.
Ojibwa Set to Arrive on September 8
Saturday, September 8 should be a day to remember in Port Burwell, Ontario. That is the day the decommissioned submarine Ojibwa, Canada’s first Oberon Class submarine is set arrive at her new home to become the centerpiece of the Elgin Military Museum’s new naval museum. The decision to earmark September 8 as the day the sub will be brought ashore and placed on her new foundations was made at a meeting of the Ojibwa Project Team on January 30. The schedule of work that set the September date is one of the remaining pieces required to obtain the final release of Ojibwa to the Museum.

Yanmar Rolls Out New Marine Power Offerings
Yanmar has already introduced several new products for the marine market in 2018, including a new common rail inboard marine diesel engine touted as the world's smallest, higher horsepower offerings in its mid range series, and expanded joystick controls. Yanmar Marine International has launched the latest addition to its family of new generation common rail (CR) diesel engines, the compact Yanmar 3JH40 inboard engine, at boot Düsseldorf. The three-cylinder 3JH40 has been developed as the marine industry’s smallest CR inboard diesel engine, Yanmar said.

NOAA: New AK Chart Makes Arctic Safer
NOAA: New Alaska navigational chart makes increased Arctic shipping safer; Kotzebue Harbor chart replaces measurements last taken in 19th century. NOAA formally presented today to Alaska officials a new nautical chart for Kotzebue Sound in the Alaskan Arctic, a sparsely charted region that is seeing increased vessel traffic because of the significant loss of summer sea ice. The new chart depicts the full range of depth measurements and object detection acquired during a full ocean bottom survey last summer by the NOAA hydrographic survey ship Fairweather.

Through a series of coincidental meetings, Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) was formed by seven individuals with different, unique backgrounds. Bristol Harbor Designs for New York Power Authority
Bristol Harbor Group, Inc., (BHGI), has reached the final design phase for an 80-ft x 34-ft x 5-ft Pedestal Crane Barge design for The New York Power Authority, (NYPA). The Pedestal Crane Barge, also known as a “Floating Crane,” is currently under construction at Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, OH, where BHGI is also providing construction oversight services. BHGI began by conducting an initial on-site investigation of the ice boom, and the existing Ice Boom Work Barge, HAVASU - currently in use as a work platform for NYPA personnel during install & removal of the Lake Erie Ice Boom. This investigation included a detailed review of the HAVASU, current retrieval and removal procedures, and deviations considered for the new barge.
AMO To Design Alaskan LNG Barges
Argent Marine Operations (AMO) has been contracted by Alaska Intrastate Gas Company (AIG) to design, develop, construct and operate barges to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Prince Rupert, British Columbia to the Alaska panhandle, Gulf of Alaska and Kodiak region. The barges will be specially designed by AMO for the demanding conditions of the Canada to Alaska trade. According to Jay Gottlieb of Argent Marine Companies, of which AMO is a unit, "Because of the increasing availability of LNG on a world-wide basis, the development of smaller scale secondary markets for importation of LNG is becoming more feasible.
Donjon Welcomes New Tug, Caitlin Ann
On August 1, 2011, Donjon added the 2400-HP-class tug Caitlin Ann to its growing fleet to support the company’s dredging, marine salvage, bulk material transportation and marine demolition services. The addition of the Caitlin Ann increases the Donjon towboat fleet to 14 total vessels ranging from 1200 to 7000 horsepower. In addition, Donjon also owns and operates five derrick barges with a maximum capacity of 1,000 tons, more than 40 deck and hopper barges, 3-4000-cubic yard split hull dump barges and numerous small vessels, floats and related marine craft.
