Removing Idle Emissions: Maersk Launches Offshore Vessel-charging Firm Stillstrom

Maersk Supply Service, an offshore supply vessel branch of A.P. Moller-Maersk, is launching its offshore vessel-charging venture, Stillstrom, to support the decarbonization of the maritime industry by eliminating idle emissions.Together with the offshore wind giant Ørsted, Stillstrom plans to demonstrate the world’s first full-scale offshore charging station for vessels at an offshore wind farm, scheduled for installation later this year. Ovation of the Seas Delivered

Meyer Werft delivered the 168,660-gt cruise ship Ovation of the Seas to the U.S. cruise operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. today in Bremerhaven. The third ship of the Quantum class sets new standards in terms of eco-friendliness, according to the shipbuilder: it features highly energy-efficient systems, optimized hydrodynamics, heat recovery, an effective underwater paint coating, a state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment plant (hybrid scrubber) as well as energy-saving LED lighting systems.

Meyer Werft delivered the latest in a long line of cruise ships that grow ever larger and more spectacular in their outfit, final finish and performance. The 167,800-gt cruise ship Quantum of the Seas was built for and delivered to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (Miami). This is the first ship of the Quantum class. It features highly energy-efficient systems, optimized hydrodynamics, heat recovery, an effective underwater paint coating, a state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment plant (hybrid scrubber) as well as energy-saving LED lighting systems.

Oregon Wave Energy Calls for US$ 10,000 Prize Entrants

Oregon Wave Energy Trust seeks submissions for Its 2012 Ocean Energy Fast Pitch competition. In conjunction with the seventh annual Ocean Renewable Energy Conference in Portland, Oregon, Oregon Wave Energy Trust (OWET), a non-profit organization working to promote the responsible development of ocean energy in Oregon, today announced it has begun seeking submissions for the 2012 Ocean Energy Fast Pitch Competition. For the first time, early stage technology developers will have the ability to “pitch” their technologies to a panel of judges in hopes of winning up to $10,000 worth of cash and in-kind support and services from OWET and ocean energy industry partners. One of the largest barriers to innovation in this field is financing.

Navy UUV Program, Small Businesses Develop Energy Technology

In a partnership that will benefit both the government and commercial enterprise, the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV) Program Office (PMS 403), small businesses and the NAVSEA Undersea Warfare Center are developing safer, more efficient energy sources for UUVs. “Our efforts promise to pay dividends not only for the [military] user community, which will end up with safer products for use aboard fleet platforms, but for small business as well, which has an opportunity to expand a market and make a key contribution to our mission,” said Capt. Paul Ims, UUV program manager. PMS 403 is responsible for developing UUV platforms and payload technologies to meet a broad spectrum of mission requirements.
