Matson Completes the Sale of Two Ships

Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has completed the sale of two combination Ro/Ro /lift-on, lift-off containerships to Sea Star Line, LLC (Sea Star) in Jacksonville, Fla. The vessels, which have been bareboat chartered to Sea Star since the company was formed in 1998, will continue to be deployed in the Puerto Rico trade. The sale to Sea Star, which is owned jointly by SaltChuk Resources, Inc., Matson and Taino Star Investment, Inc., underscores the investors' long term commitment to the line's Puerto Rico service. Matson is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. of Honolulu (Nasdaq:ALEX). The two ships, the SSs El Yunque and El Morro, were both built by Sun Ship Building and Dry Dock Company and initially placed in the U.S. Atlantic Coast-Puerto Rico trade.

Casino Boat Catches Fire off Florida Coast, 15 Injured

At least 15 people were injured when a fire engulfed a boat off the coast of Florida on Sunday, causing the 50 people aboard to jump into the Gulf of Mexico and swim to shore, local officials said. A preliminary investigation showed the fire broke out at about 4:17 p.m. EST from an apparent engine issue, said Shawn Whited, division chief with Pasco Fire Rescue. “The captain of the boat said there was an issue with the engine. He said he noticed smoke coming form the engine room and turned the boat around,” Whited said.

Shipping Company Banned from U.S. for 3 Years

The Sun Ace Shipping Company, based in Seoul, South Korea, has pleaded guilty to a one-count information for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, in relation to the operation of a bulk carrier vessel the M/V Sun New, the Justice Department announced today. Sun Ace, which was the operator and manager of a fleet of five ships, is charged with failing to maintain an accurate Oil Record Book that fully recorded the disposal of oil residue and bilge into the ocean and then falsifying records to conceal illegal discharges. Star Purchases Two Airtours Vessels

Star Cruises Plc has bought the remaining two ships of Airtours' Sun Cruises unit as well as the rights to the Sun Cruises name. The Sun Viva I and Sun Viva II will be renamed MegaStar Sagittarius and MegaStar Capricorn respectively, Star said. It gave no financial details. Star said that following its joint acquisition with U.S. cruise firm Carnival Corp last month of Norway's NCL Holdings for $1.1 billion, it has a fleet of 18 ships and over 21,000 lower berths. By 2004, with the five ships currently on order, Star/NCL will have 23 vessels with about 34,000 lower berths.

MOL Restructures Asia to S. Africa Service

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced the restructuring of its existing Asia to South Africa liner services into two direct loops. One service will call South China, while the other loop will directly connect Central China. The newly restructured loops will further strengthen MOL’s service network from Asia to South Africa, while continuing to meet increasingly diverse commercial requirements, the company said. The jointly operated South China Loop and Central China Loop services will commence from Kaohsiung on October 9, 2014 and Shanghai on October 15, 2014, respectively.

Ship Island Excursions to Sell Ferry

The Sun Herald has reported that Ship Island Excursions, a Gulfport harbor-based passenger ferry service, announced that it would sell one of its three ships because of a dramatic falloff in business. The company has put its 100-ft., 300-passenger capacity Captain Peteup for sale with ship broker Pinnacle Marine Corp. for $1 million. Selling the ferry will leave Ship Island Excursions with the larger 374-passenger capacity Gulf Islander and the 200-passenger capacity Pan American Clipper. Source: Sun Herald

M.V. Midnight Sun Embarks on Maiden Voyage

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. new vessels, the M. departing Tacoma, Washington at 3:00 A. M. on Wednesday, April 23. Midnight Sun is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Anchorage at approximately 2:00 A. M. on Saturday, April 26. It is the first Orca Class roll-on/roll-off trailer ship TOTE has commissioned for service from Tacoma, Washington to Anchorage, Alaska. The M. V. Midnight Sun and her sister ship, M. V. North Star, are 840 feet long and 118 feet wide. Their width adds increased maneuverability on the ship, allowing trailers as large as 53 feet long, a choice TOTE wanted to offer its customer base shipping cargo to the Alaska marketplace.

New Orleans Welcomes Norwegian Sun

Norwegian Sun entered the Port of New Orleans as the first cruise ship to homeport in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. The ship docked at the city's new $37 million Erato Street Terminal, which is designed to accommodate larger cruise ships. Norwegian Sun calls the Crescent City home for the winter season sailing seven-day exotic Western Caribbean cruise with ports of call including Costa Maya, Mexico; Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala; Belize City, Belize and Cozumel, Mexico.

TOTE, Inc.: The New look of American Shipping Group

NASSCO and TOTE Christen the M. V. Midnight Sun

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has joined with Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) to christen the M. V. Midnight Sun, the first commercial dry cargo vessel to be built in the United States in 10 years. The Midnight Sun is the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Washington, to Anchorage, Alaska. Lynn Garvey, wife of Mike Garvey, Chairman of the Board of TOTE's parent company, Saltchuk Resources, Inc., and Lily Stevens, the daughter of Senator Ted Stevens (R- Alaska), were the ship's sponsors, christening the M. V. Midnight Sun with ceremonial bottles of champagne. Senator Stevens, who is serving in his seventh term in the U.S. Senate, was the keynote speaker at the event. The M.

Dispute Arises Over Fate Of Sunken Cruise Ship

Maritime authorities and insurers are reported to be at odds regarding the removal of the Sun Vista, the luxury cruise liner that caught fire and sank off the Malaysian last week. Apparently, Malaysian maritime leaders are demanding that Sun Cruises remove the sunken from the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Insurers claim the ship is outside Malaysia's jurisdiction -- in international waters --and poses no hazard.

Princess Cruises Choose 3G with MCP

Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) was chosen by Princess Cruises to outfit the Sun Princess with on-board 3G wireless communication services. MCP, a global onboard communications partner, announced that the Princess Cruises ship - Sun Princess - is the second cruise ship in the world to offer their passengers 3G mobile communication services at sea. The California based cruise operator launched 3G on their vessel the Sun Princess at the end of May this year. This new service has provided the ships passengers and crew with MCP’s latest mobile communication technology to access data services and improve the user-experience on board.

Olympic Security Lives Aboard

According to an April 22 report from The Vancouver Sun, more than 5,000 Olympic security workers will live on three cruise ships at Ballantyne Pier in Vancouver during the 2010 Games as part of a contract announced Tuesday by the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit. (Source: The Vancouver Sun)

Detyens Shipyard Saves Christmas Cruise

Cunard's Seaborn Sun underwent an emergency dry-docking to repair internal damage to the port controllable pitch propeller. Detyens dissembled the blades and hub internals as well as installed new parts supplied by the manufacturer and machined by the shipyard. Detyens employees worked 24-hour shifts in order to expedite the return of the Seaborn Sun to Ft. Lauderdale in time for the start of their Christmas cruise. Detyens also completed steel and pipe renewals, cleaning and coating of the hull and the performance of an inclining experiment while the ship was at Detyens facility.

MOL Adjusts Intra-Asia Service Network

MOL Liner Ltd. (MOL) announced an enhancement of its Intra-Asia service network with new rotation of “HS3” and new Japan-Strait service “HS4,” offering competitive service despite potential schedule disruption as a result of recent port congestion in the region. MOL will introduce Singapore-Jakarta feeder service (AJS is operated by MOL) to stabilize the service schedule of “HS3”. This will help maintain competitive transit times from Japan to Jakarta by transshipment to this dedicated feeder service and reduce the risk of accumulated delays at ports. Furthermore, the new “HS3” will add a direct call at Shekou on the northbound rotation to cover service needs from/to the port of Shekou. MOL will offer a new service “HS4” to link Japan-Taiwan-Hong Kong-Jakarta.

Globus Maritime Expands Fleet to Seven with Supramax Delivery

Globus Maritime Announces the Delivery of the Supramax "Sun Globe," Expanding Fleet to Seven Vessels. Globus Maritime Limited ("Globus" or the "Company"), (NASDAQ: GLBS), a dry bulk shipping company, announced that it has taken delivery of the M/V "Sun Globe," a 2007-built Supramax dry bulk carrier it acquired for a purchase price of $30.3 million, which the Company had previously announced in March 2011. The M/V "Sun Globe" was built at the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Cebu yard and has a carrying capacity of 58,790 DWT. Following delivery, the vessel will continue her deployment under a time charter to Cosco Qingdao at the gross daily rate of $16,000 until (min) January / (max) March 2015.

Cruise Ships with Sick Passengers Dock in Florida

For the third time in two months Sunday, luxury cruise ships sailed into South Florida ports bearing sick passengers. More than 100 passengers and crew arrived in Port Everglades on Princess Cruise's Sun Princess showing symptoms of norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness that resembles stomach flu. And 99 passengers and 11 crew members came down with the virus on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas -- for the second time in a week, said officials with the Miami-based cruise line and federal regulators. Freedom of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, was held over at the Port of Miami for additional cleaning under the direction of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Viking Sun Construction Underway

A keel laying ceremony was held today for Viking Sun, the fourth of six cruise ships ordered by Viking Ocean Cruises to be built by Fincantieri at its Ancona shipyard. The first building block of the ship, about 11 meters long, 28.8 meters wide and weighing about 280 tons, is part of the central section of Viking Sun, due to delivery in 2017. Viking Sun, as its sister ships, will be placed in the small cruise ship segment. With a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons, it will have 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers, with a total capacity of over 1,400 people, including the crew.

MOL: New Containerships to Upgrade Service

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced an upgrade to its Asia-East Coast South America Service (CSW). From July 2011 through 2012, MOL will launch a total of 10 new 5,600 TEU containerships which will replace its currently-operated vessels on the CSW. The newbuilding ships will adopt a new wide-beam and shallow-draft design, featuring high loading capacity and compatibility with shallow-draft ports in South America. Moreover, effective July 2011, MOL will assign an additional ship to CSW with a total of 13 ships, which allows sufficient time to revise the existing schedule. Along with the fleet expansion, MOL will begin chartering space to a consortium of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line), Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd.

Norwegian Sun Under Ecological Investigation

Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) Norwegian Sun has prompted an ecological investigation after the 853 ft. vessel released some 16,000 gallons of black water in the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Washington. Officials from the Washington State Department of Ecology along with U.S. Coast Guard investigators boarded the Norwegian Sun on May 11 in Seattle to examine the sewage system a week after the questionable, but reported incident occurred.

Fishing Vessel Owner, Captain Face Environmental Charges

The owner and captain of the commercial F/V Native Sun, were indicted Thursday for conspiracy, as well as violations of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS). According to the indictment, starting in 2011 and continuing into 2013, Bingham and Randall Fox discharged and caused other crewmembers to illegally discharge oil and other pollutants into waters of the United States, coastal waters near Blaine, Wash., and the open ocean where the ship operated. The discharge of oil and other bilge wastes are regulated by the CWA and APPS to protect the nation's waterways, port and ocean water quality. The discharge of oils and other pollutants in waters of the United States is prohibited absent a CWA permit.

BigLift Shipping Expands Heavy Lift Fleet

BigLift Shipping said it has ordered a third Happy S-type vessel. The new build vessel, to be named Happy Sun, will be identical to BigLift’s Happy Star and will be built by Ouhua Shipbuilding in Zhoushan, China. The new vessel is expected for delivery in the first quarter of 2018. Happy Sun will feature two 900-metric-ton Huisman Heavy Lift Mast Cranes which will make her geared for the handling of heavy cargoes all over the world. With her high crane pedestals and lengthened jib she will have a lifting height only matched by her sister Happy Star in the worldwide fleet of heavy lift vessels.
