Singapore MSC Office Changes Leadership
Military Sealift Command's Singapore-based Sealift Logistics Command Far East changed leadership as Navy Capt. Jim Romano relieved Navy Capt. Susan Dunlap. The change of command ceremony, held near SEALOGFE's headquarters office at Sembawang Wharves, was the command's first since it moved to its current location from Japan in July 2006. Dunlap, SEALOGFE's first Singapore-based commodore, led the charge to establish a permanent MSC footprint on the city-state island nation. SEALOGFE operates an average of 50 ships in the eastern Pacific and Indian oceans, delivering fuel and supplies to U.S. Navy forces at sea, transporting military cargo between ports, responding to humanitarian crises and conducting other special operations.
Engineering Students Full Speed Ahead With Improved CBT
With the first quarter of this year behind them, Sailors pursuing engineering-based ratings are now up to speed with computer-based training (CBT) that offers 150 lessons previously requiring classrooms and instructors. The first phase of CBT was launched at the Basic Engineering Common Core (BECC) over a year ago as training was reconfigured to eliminate the legacy “A” School system and replace it with a standardized engineering program for all ratings as part of the Revolution in Training. Sailors pursing engineering ratings spend the first three weeks at Damage Control, training in firefighting, flooding emergencies and chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) warfare. The remainder of the curriculum is spent mastering engineering fundamentals.
New EOD, Navy Diver Learning Site Begins Training
The Center for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving (CENEODDIVE) has established a new learning site at Training Support Center (TSC), Great Lakes, Ill., where the first class commenced Oct. 19 with a group of 18 EOD students. The new site was created to conduct preparatory training for Navy Diver (ND) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel emerging from Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes. Traditionally, an ND or EOD Sailor would receive training at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC) in Panama City, Fla., following boot camp at RTC. SECNAV Visits Naval Station Great Lakes
Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter visited Naval Station Great Lakes Oct. 10 and met with Sailors and toured Recruit Training Command (RTC) and Training Support Center (TSC). While touring RTC, Winter remarked about the considerable changes at the Navy’s only boot camp. “It’s interesting just to talk to the people in charge and to understand the dynamics of the training process,” Winter said. “I’m very pleased with what I’m hearing in terms of the overall adaptation of the training process to the Navy of the 21st century. RTC is nearly finished with a massive recapitalization program that began after the Navy consolidated all enlisted Basic Training from San Diego and Orlando, Fla., to RTC Great Lakes.
Naval Engineering Introduces Computer-Based Training
Center for Naval Engineering (CNE) Learning Site Great Lakes launched the first phase of Computer-Based Training (CBT) Nov. 28 with the first wave of Basic Engineering Common Core (BECC) students breaking in the new curriculum in an Integrated Learning Environment (ILE). Cmdr. Eddie Oleykowski, director of training, CNE, Norfolk, Va., supervised as the first class of 25 students officially made the transition from instructor-led training to CBT. In the ILE, the traditional instructor is replaced with a facilitator who addresses individual student concerns along the way. The Naval Personnel and Training Command introduced the ILE concept in 2002 as part of the Revolution in Training to standardize content and improve access to curriculums.
