On the U.S. Gulf Coast, two well-regarded maritime education providers are expanding to meet growing local demand, while satisfying local employers with quality graduates. The sense of ‘community’ that they project is both real, and intentional. Less than 350 miles apart, the ports of Houston and New Orleans handle all manners of marine commerce and cargoes, employ tens of thousands on the waterfront and collectively service an increasingly large percentage of the nation’s domestic and international marine traffic. As both ports deepen their channels and grow their facilities, the need for qualified mariners, dock workers and marine professionals has become more acute.

Transas was founded in 1990, by a group of former navigators and engineers, who at that time envisioned ways in which computers could revolutionize maritime safety, communications and security. In the ensuing 25 years Transas has pioneered navigational technology across a wide sector, developing into a true “household name” in the global maritime industry. In 1995, Transas also entered the highly competitive simulation market, and today there are more than 13,000 vessels sailing with Transas navigation systems, and more than 5,500 simulators installed, globally.

Transas and Danelec Marine announced that Transas has selected Danelec Marine as one of the company’s suppliers of Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs). Under the agreement, Transas becomes an authorized partner for Danelec Marine, providing VDRs for newbuilds and retrofits through its sales offices and representatives around the world. The Danelec DM100 is the first VDR type approved and Wheelmarked under the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard, which came into force July 1, 2014. Europort 2001 — the 30th edition of the exhibition — scheduled for November 13 to 17 at the Amsterdam RAI, is traditionally an event where companies from around the globe debut innovative new marine equipment and technology. While the exhibition is often considered a regional affair, the event indeed fulfills its international billing with a roster of more than 550 companies from around the globe, and halls filled with ship owners and operators with an equal international distribution. In 1999 exhibition management stated that the event drew more than 30,000 visitors from 88 countries. This year's event will offer a few extras, including a special focus on inland shipping.

Pilotage Maritimes du Havre, the famous French pilot station, has chosen a Transas bridge simulator to be used for training professional seafarers at their premises. The contract for supplying and installing the simulator, as well as for dedicated Instructor training, has been secured by Transas Europe GmbH, the official representative of the Transas Group in Western Europe, in close cooperation with Electronic Equipment S.A., their local partner in France. The Head Department of Navigation and Oceanography (HDNO) of the Russian Federation has recognized Transas vector charts in the TX-97 format for use in remote areas of the World Ocean, as per Notices to Mariners issue 32/2003 *5093/3 of August 2003. According to the HDNO recommendation, the usage of the Transas world TX-97 database with updated paper charts will improve safety of navigation. After a close verification procedure, the expert commission has confirmed that Transas vector digitized electronic charts represent a high-quality product fully compliant with all the related international standards and regulations, including the ISO: 9000 quality system. The in-house production of vector electronic charts is an important area of Transas activities.
